Wow! So many interesting and thought-provoking responses, I don't even know where to begin here. In thinking about this a little further I guess it's true that there are many things which define us depending on your perspectives. Really, this is a goldmine of responses, so I'm going to have to keep this general. I'm trying to get away from the labels and the various roles that we fulfill in our lives, employee, employer, parent, sister, brother, submissive, dominant, and so on, as I feel that's perhaps just a part of who we are. If we were to take the statement 'I am me, I am X, X is me' and this is our own (perceived) intrinsic value, i.e. that what makes us different from everyone else.. No, maybe value isn't a good word here, perhaps quality or essence, yes, essence, where does the identity of that essence come from? Does it come from other people? From our experiences? Or does it come from somewhere deep within ourselves? And if it comes from deep within ourselves, how much of it is influenced by other people in our lives and how much by our own experiences?
