The UK if it were a family unit would at best be described as disfunctional , that said im opposed to any devolution north or south of the border(yes the horse has bolted)

I'd say the opposite. I think England, Scotland and Wales has been a pretty impressive unit over the years. For me, though, the purpose of Great Britain/UK has ran its course. The irony will be that while the Scots and Welsh dither over devolution, momentum will gain ground among the English, which it is; and the Scots and Welsh will argue for the union while the English will argue against it (after all of these years of cries of 'English oppression').

Perhaps it has ran its course(I disagree but frankly i wont lose any sleep either if a full seperation takes place ) but the insular thinking of a proportion of the population of each country is in my mind not the way forward either.
As for oppression ? you are referring to a small proportion of people with a chip on their shoulder plus is it worth noting the ongoing North/South divisions within England also(talk of a devolved house in Newcastle or there abouts not so long ago).
One only need  look at not only the current cabinets senior members but previous ones also to see clearly that Scotland at least is hardly suppressed by English rule!!... the West Lothian question has most certainly came to pass.

Anyhow politics and religion .......................

Last night I took Pirate to a local pub called Four Green Fields.  It's in town, near the bay.  IT has a thatched roof :) He seemed to be impressed (and a bit surprised) by the level of authenticity.  The performer that was playing there last night played the National anthem at the end of the night.

Four Green Fields

That is one stunning pub and something a little surreal surrounded by the modern high rise.
Irish bars are very popular here in Scotland and on the occasions i do go out for a pub night out they are my first choice and the music generally never disappoints..

Quick profile checks and it seems congratulations are in order to you both(you ll love Wales if you have nt already been..... but Brit weather????Hmmm

Knite.. I havent been to Wales yet... although I have been to various parts of England.  I am already resigned to the fact that I will need an entirely different wardrobe for living in Wales than has been serving me for the past .....um... lemme think... umpteen years!  LOL

(I totally expect to look like the MIchelin Man during Autumn, Winter and early Spring there...)

I didn't get to read this until after I had several repeats of suspect device, including the one you mentioned, along with Alternative Ulster in various renditions. It may sound selfish that I spoiled myself in this manner, but guess what, I don't care ! (yes ... the spirit is still there ) I will in fact play them all again today !
As to the explanations, I am resigned to leaving it as "folk music, of the variety that demands to be played very loud indeed" , that should excuse me having to explain about Angelic Upstarts, Buzzcocks, X-Ray Specs, Albertos, The Exile etc, etc, etc, etc. because then the volume becomes somewhat obstructive to the process of explaining anything

I wonder (back to the topic) Does anyone consider the Pogues to have been "Fake Irish" in their selection of lead singer ... ? I, of course don't ... because Joe Strummer was a hero (although no where near as funny as watching Shane McGowan try to stand up as well as sing ... at the same time.

I had nt really thought of SLF as folk music before but it does fit....they were reflecting the times they lived in and the anger and frustration of the majority during the troubles...so yes folk music fits for me.

Xray specs...identity...germ free adolescent etc etc...she was good...along with SLF and xray specs i was into the stranglers ...pistols... the damned...boomtown rats....ian dury...pogues...not too big on the clash but clash city rockers,,,,white riot...amongst others were awesome and a sad day Joe Strummer left us

anyways good to know theres more dinosaur first gen punks still around out there but in fairness some of the new ones aint too bad...drop kick murphies etc

Was Shane Mcgowan "fake Irish"? Born in Kent i think to Irish parents so who knows(except the OP)....he wrote some amazing lyrics but never peaked because he has seen his whole life through the bottom of a bottle..shame really

old "settlement patterns" dont take into account the fact that people often move away from their families.
have you researched your oh so uncouth neighbors and their geneology? do you know for a fact that, just because they live in the south, they aren't of irish descent? =p

heck MY paternal grandfather was irish and cherokee =p

i'm an american with "irish descent" as one of the many feathers in my cap.

R.I.P. Joe Strummer, who listed, at least on one occasion, his favourite place to relax as being Wilkins farm in Somerset ... in my experience of having visited Roger Wilkins (apart from the regular prior cider pilgramages) since Joe departed, both Joe Strummer's and Johnny Rotten's pictures are still on display inside the barn, I drank a few of Rogers free "samples" (half a pint each at 8% ish by volume) and my mate drove back, we had 10 separate gallons of Rogers, indeed ENGLANDS finest cider on board, of which every drop was worth the 500 mile round trip.

Not only was he a music legend, he had impeccable taste in cider.

She played it too ... what a motherfucking tune ! I thank you.
