Fashionistas be damned.  Wait until your my side of 40 and see if you change your tune about listening to what other women say you can and can't wear anymore.

I got cha that ladies over 40 shouldn't wear mini skirts to the office... but then, I don't think ANY woman should wear skirts more than 2 or 3 inches above the knee in a professional situation.  But going out on the town?  Watch out!

And thanks, Akasha.  I'm rather fond of that boy.

Subtee, Right on Sister!  gees... I gotta dye my hair this weekend... I can see 2 or 3 grey roots showing.  Eeep!

No one wants the forum's favorite Faery to fall and break her crown.  Be safe out there.

Where is this rule book?

Any of the "What Not to Wear" books by Trinny and Susannah, and also an out-of-print book by Kevin Aucoin (rest in peace my darling) called "Face."

I also never miss an issue of Harper's Bazaar and I am constantly tuned into fashion week!

Plus I design clothes myself.  [:D]

And I confess, I am having a huge mid-life crisis of sorts...almost being 40 years old.  I don't want to dress inappropriately for my age, but I can't help but feel attracted to outfits that I know are for girls in their 20s.  I guess I need to get over it :)  I sure don't feel 40.  How do you dress "age appropriately" if you are kinky, alternative, love tight and black, shiny things?

Akasha

We've been going through this at our house, PLUS... as in "how do you dress "age and -size- appropriately when all the kinky stuff out there for one's size looks like sleazy lingerie that they poured the models into and forgot to say "when"... or is being shown on girls who weigh about 6 lbs dripping wet and -clearly- will not be attractive on women as substantial as I am (or even more delicately substantial like my Darling, who is more of a size 14-ish)!

My solution was to commission my fashion-designer/tattoo artist daughter to make me some fetish-wear that doesn't make me look like a Sicilian sausage! I'm hoping that this fall, I'll have some really nice, really -hot- fetish wear to go with my "kinky boots".

I love my boots but don't really get to show them off much. I usually wear them with jeans (boring). I have a couple of longer tunic style blouses that I was thinking would look good over leggings and boots. I'm going to try that out. I don't worry too much about being age appropriate. As long as the entire outfit is not blasting "teenager" it seems to work. I can get by if one element is youthful and the rest is more mature. (at least that's the theory) I also have a great full length pencil skirt with a slit up the side. Love to wear that with boots.

Hime -> RE: Ladies...how do you wear your boots this Fall? (8/21/2008 11:57:51 PM)

I couldn't wait until fall to break out my boots.  Nine West Elegy Boots
I wore them the other day and got tons of looks, compliments, and a few catty glares! [:D]

It's still summer so, I wore these boots (and others) with skinny jeans, a tank top, oversized bag, and oversized sunglasses.
For fall, I plan on getting a pair (or more) of slouch boots....like these Tribeca's - to wear with skinny jeans "or" leggings, and loose (or off the shoulder) sweaters.

My personal feeling on current fashion is that there is no such thing as "age appropriate" If you want to wear it. Go for it. If you go into stores you see very similar styles for both juniors and misses with an exception about t-shirts. I don't see the problem. If it makes you feel good. Wear it. 'Nuff said. Also, boots = year round staple. Specially if you need them for Rocky Horror but that's besides the point.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Ladies...how do you wear your boots this Fall? (8/22/2008 8:45:08 AM)

I wish I could wear boots....when I was young and thin, I could barely wear them, my legs are too big!  Now, forget it...the ones at Torrid are too fucking HUGE and clunky.  I have these DIVINE Puma faux-wrestling boots with all these velcro straps in the back of my closet, I hadhadhad to have them, waited for the sale, blah blah blah.  Sigh.  I fondle them from time to time.

fashionista rant/:
Regarding age appropriateness--when I was in college the first time, I was friends with a lady who was in her mid 40's, as I am now.  We would go to lunch, shop at Saks, that kind of thing.  Her wardrobe was fab, but it was almost EXACTLY what I would have chosen for myself.  Yes, it all fit, but she looked as if she had raided her daughter's closet.  She also made the mistake sometimes of having the skirts a twitch too tight, to show off the figure, I guess.  (for an example, go look at Ellen Barkin in "Sea of Love")

Way back then, I said to myself, Self, don't let that happen to you!  And I haven't.  I am adoring all the great 70's retro looks.  BUT I WORE THEM IN THE 70's!!  This is a *sign* that unless I am dressing ironically, I don't want to just grab the pretties.  I admire the cast of Buffy, I am not one of them.  Short skirts, sure.  MINI skirts?  Only at a fetish event.  Make sure it FITS.  If there are wrinkles across the tum, it is too small!  No one can see the farking size tag while you are wearing it!

/rant

I color my hair for entertainment, and because charcoal brown is not an exciting color.  Nothing sticks to the grey for long, so I think of them as a natural highlighter.  Might as well!

CallaFirestormBW -> RE: Ladies...how do you wear your boots this Fall? (8/22/2008 8:49:37 AM)

My absolute -favorite- pair of boots (cause they make me -tall-!) http://www.cryoflesh.com/shop/product_info.php?cPath=23_11&products_id=848

Also because, with MS, one thing that "bit the big one" was heels -- I used to love my heels, but now I can't balance on them -- these are tall, but the 'rise' is only about 1 1/2 inches, so I can actually stand and walk in them for a couple of hours without worrying about falling over because my balance centers are so screwed up.

I adore boots but hate the trashy porn star heels and platforms, AND if a guy could wear them and not get looked at funny.......they are NOT SEXY they are just functional.

This year I am bringing out some sexy alligator and suede brown knee high boots that have a sky high skinny wedge heel that I got for a great price at Neiman's this spring. I am in the mood for long tunic sweaters and leggings. Also, I will be wearing my favouring riding boots with leggings this year. Skirts still call my sexy pumps out to play. And a definate NO to minis, no matter how hot my legs look, knee length pencil skirts is as short as this woman is going. Sexy is one thing, cheap hoe trashy is another.

Are you kidding?  Where are you shopping, Wal-Mart?  Shorts and skirts are different lengths, tops are very different cuts, dresses are different lengths and styles...  There definitely is such a thing as age-appropriate.

And for the love of god PLEASE remember that the rest of us out there have to look at you in whatever you wear... so before you step out of the house in your too-tight shirt and your super-short shorts use a mirror, please?  Seems that 70% of the world has stopped owning one... I can't tell you how many times I've been out and about and saw people wearing things so inappropriate for their figure or their age that I actually felt a twinge of pity for them.  This goes in reverse as well, by the way, when I see pretty young girls shuffling around in sweatpants and baggy T-shirts and I think "oh no, honey, why, WHY?!"  Age appropriate nowadays does not necessarily mean super frumpy and gross, but there certainly is a cutoff point for flimsy halter tops and butt-shorts.

Oh, and proper underwear.  I don't care how old you are, if you've got a cheap-ass bra that isn't holding the puppies where they need to be, go ahead and tack an extra ten years onto your age.  Seriously.

I'll admit it, I am a fashionista bitch.  I am horribly judgemental and will always side with the other fashionista bitches out there.  I'm going to steal/paraphrase a Trinny and Susannah quote here when I say that your best friends won't tell you what to wear... but I am NOT your best friend, and I will.  [:D]

Usually horribly bluntly, but whatever, some people need that kick in the ass to stop dressing like a goddamn hobo.

Edit: Forgot to add in this entire thread my boots dilemma in the hopes that someone can help me out... usually I stick to my leather pointed-toe/stiletto heeled knee-high boots that I love so dearly, but a factor of calf muscle built up from dancing/ice skating/martial arts coupled with an illness that causes my legs to swell to twice their normal size makes wearing any of the zip-up boots impossible.  Other than going with ankle boots and slacks this fall, does anybody have a similar problem that they've figured out how to solve, or have any ideas as to what the Hell I can do?

LaTigresse -> RE: Ladies...how do you wear your boots this Fall? (8/22/2008 11:30:55 AM)

I hate to suggest it but I've seen boots made for full sized women that are much fuller cut in the calf area........it might be an option.

there is no way i would ever allow a few strangers who have written a book dictate what i like, what looks good on me and how i should dress.

I have my own style. I have a mirror and i have taste. And.....like so many other women on this site who will not pick up a "How to.." manual on how to dress.....i can turn a head or two.

VirginPotty -> RE: Ladies...how do you wear your boots this Fall? (8/22/2008 11:56:20 AM)

Yes, but turning their head to VOMIT doesn't count! Read the book! [sm=book.gif]

Nah, don't hate to suggest it, I didn't even know they made such a thing!  Sadly my knowledge of what's out there is a bit limited to what was available when I was so skinny I used to bitch that my size 2's were falling off me... le sigh, I miss those days.  Thanks for the tip, I'll look into that.
