Last time i spotted a woman wearing jeans tucked into boots, i walked into a lampost. Lets keep that just between ourselves though. [8D]

A slender skirt, shapely legs and high heels will do that to me.

I was not born with the girly gene.  I do not keep up with "fashion" because it's out of date in six months to a year.  My budget will not support a new wardrobe, or even accessories, that often.  My problem is finding clothes/shoes in styles that are classic enough to wear year after year.

Suggestions, Ms. Fashion Guru?  I could use the help.  [;)]

There are some things that will NEVER go out of style, which is usually what I aim for in my wardrobe as much as possible -- until Rockafeller sends me my check, I have to make stuff last!  You want to go for things that are more of a timeless style.  The structured jackets I spoke about previously are a good example of this.  If you can find a cute tailored-looking denim jacket, combining it with a pair of well-fitting slacks (typically a straight-leg style is the best since it's flattering on everyone), a solid-colored top, and a pair of kitten heels, you're set to look good for quite some time.  The important thing to remember is not to match denim to denim, and matching accessories all the way around is just poor taste -- i.e. matching plaid shoes and handbag.

As far as skirts go, A-line skirts will never go out of style.  High-waisted skirts have come back in fashion but I'm skeptical of how long they're going to hang around.  Look for something that sits properly at your waist.  "Swishy" skirts that will flutter around your legs as you walk also have a tendency to make them look long and gorgeous, just remember that you're looking for at-the-knee length.  Calf-length skirts are tricky to pull off unless you're tall, otherwise they tend to make those of us who are height-challenged look stumpy as heck.

Do some research.  Notice what clothing items are constantly available in the stores, and then narrow it down from there with common sense.  For instance, stretchy pants are still available pretty much everywhere, but come on now.  [8|]  The prints and colors may change but the structure and style will remain constant.  You can get away with wearing fairly conservative prints and colors and then jazz it up with funky necklaces or other accessories, since they're so cheap in most cases if they do go out of fashion you can just chuck them or put them away for when they inevitably do come back into style.

Shoes-wise, by the way, that kitten heel I was mentioning is AMAZING.  It's classy, it still makes your legs look sexy, is comfortable enough to walk around and run errands in, and if you're not used to wearing heels they're a great compromise.  Classic pumps are pretty much a safe bet as well.  My favorite thing to do is go to Wet Seal and pick up one of every color of pumps they sell there.  They hold together about as well as a pair of shoes from Payless would, they come in literally every color of the rainbow so you have NO problem matching them with outfits, and they're dirt cheap.  Sometimes you can get them on sale 2 pair for $20!

It's hard to explain without pictorials!  But a good rule of thumb is, if you walk into a store and look at a new arrival and say "Who the Hell would wear THAT?!" it's probably not considered timeless and is probably just one of those of-the-moment fashion trends.  Honestly as much as I love the 80s throwback stuff going on now, I have an inkling it's going to be on its way back out very soon.  I also do recommend checking out What Not to Wear on TLC even though I don't find the hosts nearly as charming as the BBC version, as they deal mostly in those elusive classic looks that look good on everyone.  Except ignore the prices they quote for the stuff because if you're a smart shopper you can get basically the exact same outfit for a quarter of the price.

Really jeans tucked into boots? That dosent look stupid? I've always wanted to do that! I have some kick ass looking boots and its always a shame to have to hide them under jeans....

Im 5'8 105lbs with legs for miles, I have a sort of....gothy/biker girl wardrobe. lots of black tight tank tops and jeans and big leather belts, the boots over the jeans wouldent be too much?

Omg, girl yes. Tight skinny jeans tucked into a cute pair of boots is hot!
Throw on a chunky belt, a tank top, a few bangle bracelets,....and you have yourself a rock'n little outfit!

For wearing jeans over boots....I always prefer a very pointed toe and high stiletto heel.

Well I just hate ya all(with love of course). Your thread made me go out and buy 2 pairs of boots today. One swede pair and another brown pair with a rounded heel. The heel is so high I was standing on the balls of my feet. I won be walking much in those but I think they will be appreciated by someone...[:D]

Ok, needing serious fashion advice/tips then  - because I don't have the time/patience to do the research.  What about belts?  When do you wear them and not wear them?

One thing I am seriously lazy about is ANY accessories. I love purses and shoes, but beyond that, I hate to buy costume jewelrey or anything like belts that are to be matched to outfits.  So soon I will be going out to be a few that are versatile enough that can go a variety of ways.

Hime -> RE: Ladies...how do you wear your boots this Fall? (8/22/2008 4:28:58 PM)

I knoooow....this thread is kill'n me.  As soon as I read the word "boots" in the title I should have known not to click it.  I just bought a new pair of boots last week. And now, I have 3 pairs in my online shopping cart at this moment - I'm 2 seconds from clicking checkout!

Claremont Boots - These vegan leather boots are going to go great with a vintage 70's trench in the same color.
Delight Boots - This season, I'm a sucker for "scrunch and slouch". These boots will go great with beige and cream sweaters.
Heart Boots - I have absolutely NOTHING to wear with these boots but, I'll be perfectly content just strutting around the house in these naked. [:D]

"Just do it!" I'm 44 and love the boots. Gotta be platform and at least 4". The worst way to age, it seems to me, is to dress like you're aging.

Besides you rock.[;)]

Well crap. I've already been told I can't have long hair anymore either. So I should get the short, permed hair thing, like saloned once a week and start buying polyester pants and Candies?

Kill me now.

subtee!  Sister!

Keep your long, sexy hair, and wear what expresses you!

If a woman wants to wear stuff that's usually for someone younger, you just have to give it some elegance.

To my aesthetic, that means it fits, has some shape to it - to show your shape -, has some style and detail to it, and looks (doesn't have to be) expensive, i.e., well designed and well made.

This is the woman-of-substance's version of...anything wearable.

I have a few pair of boots like this http://www.electriqueboutique.com/womens-shoes/Sporty-Lace-Up-Boot/331-35-BLK.html, a red pair and a black pair, tried to find them in white too, but they always seem to be out of my size. That is one of my favorite online stores for shoes!

Sylvere, come and check out my closet!  Sadly, very little velvet counts in the "classic" area, but I do have some good examples.

Pyrrs, check out Torrid, they have *some* boots, but I find that their idea of what a plus size leg is is much larger than yours or mine, that just has that dancery bulge.  (Mine is covered in fat, but it remains! honest!)

We have to hang out more.  I love Trinny and Susannah!  I also dress like an utter slobovian around the house!!

LadySunn -> RE: Ladies...how do you wear your boots this Fall? (8/22/2008 5:41:14 PM)

Ahhhh....black 4inch stilleto leather zip up boots with a black cashmere skirt suit and a lime green shell.

Belts are the bane of my existence.  I use them to hold up my jeans but other than that I find no use for them as fashion dictates nowadays -- which is, take a tunic-length shirt and add a wide belt around the middle; the same is done with dresses.  They draw the eye inward and make the waist look smaller, but you have to take into consideration your bust.  If you're big on top (like I am), I find that they overshadow the belt and look even bigger.

Ribbon belts are supposedly inappropriate for office wear, chain belts are very hard to pull off because they're considered to be so trendy, they go in and out of fashion.

Accessories are really where I get strange.  I'm a fan of taking a conservative-looking outfit and then adding some steampunk-style jewelry or I hide as many bats and skulls and crosses as I can in it without them being noticeable at first glance.  Depending on the outfit and the season I sometimes order tribal pieces from the middle east, chandelier earrings, thick bracelets, the gorgeous metal and jewel necklaces, things like that.  The good news is that accessories are very much based on your own personal tastes, within reason!  Unless you're buying things like rubber bracelets or big tacky 80's plastic earrings, you should be on the safe side.

BUT!  If you're going to get adventurous with accessories, make one piece your "bam!" piece and the rest more subtle, otherwise you'll look too cluttered.

I'd probably use them for my "bad day" boots because when my legs swell... hooo boy, it's a terrifying thing to behold.  Goddamned lymph nodes not doing their job, one of these days I'm just going to grab a pin and go *POKEPOKEPOKE* and be done with it [&:]

Hail to the slobovian home garments!  My fashion sense only extends to going out of the house.  I'll put on makeup and do a wardrobe change to grab the mail, but inside these four walls... tanktop and the rattiest, most comfortable PJ pants I can dig out of my drawer.  Swear to God if my co-workers ever saw me in my "at home" gear they wouldn't recognize me.

I love the current high waisted pencil skirt trend - paired with a tucked in white collared button down (folded up sleeves), peep toe heels, and a "corset belt" to finish off the look.  Very classy, sexy, and such a powerful look.

I wish I could wear boots....when I was young and thin, I could barely wear them, my legs are too big!  Now, forget it...the ones at Torrid are too fucking HUGE and clunky.  I have these DIVINE Puma faux-wrestling boots with all these velcro straps in the back of my closet, I hadhadhad to have them, waited for the sale, blah blah blah.  Sigh.  I fondle them from time to time.

I had this problem too. I probably tried on 50 pairs before I found some that fit. Most of the ones I wear are ankle boots, and I have a pair that lace up so I can loosen them. (they have a zipper too so I don't have to lace them on and off all the time) But, I was complaining about the problem with boots fitting to a coworker one time and what she told me she did was to take a pair to a shoemaker and have him add an elastic panel to the calf of the boot. She paid about $20 for it. So if you find a pair that fit pretty well and you can zip them most of the way, but lack maybe 3-4 inches, I think this would probably work.

The high waisted skirts are bad for already-large boobs though.  It doesn't work for anyone, but when it does, it is very pretty and kind of reminiscent of 40s pinup.

It is only a trend though... I just hope it stays around, maybe becomes one of the new classics.

Hime -> RE: Ladies...how do you wear your boots this Fall? (8/22/2008 6:46:34 PM)

As the self-proclaimed President of the "itty bitty titty committee" - I must say, the grass is always greener on the other side.
I have three highwaisted skirt outfits and, I swear - I think to myself....if I was only a cup size larger this outfit would go from Hot...to Smoke'n Hot!

But seriously, even if someone chooses not to wear this style outfit in public - add a pair of seamed cuban foot stockings, bold rimmed glasses, and a paddle.  warning: instant drool.  [:D]
