Status: offline 		Not just water fowl, but most raptors mate for life as well.

Additionally, pride animals and herd animals mate for life although their relationship
would be considered polyamorous if one wanted to anthropomorphize a pack of wolves.

Elephants will not have sex with members of their own family. There was an example where a local wild animal rescue park had a male elephant, and found a female elephant from a zoo that was closing in Cincinatti. They put the two together, and two years later
she had gone into heat at least once yet they had never showed the slightest interest in each other.

Further research showed they both came from the same elephant hunter/capturer company and DNA testing showed they were siblings.

Not sure what that has to do with the issue of monogamy, but there you go.

Additionally, human beings are not really monogamous. The idea of monogamy was actually passed to us fairly recently in the history of the race. But our closest relative simian species are a pack animal with an alpha and many beta males. From my perspective, human beings are monogamous because they have chosen to be and/or
have been made to be by social factors.

Just me, could be wrong, but there you go.

I totally agree with you. I also think the notion that species that mate for life are circumventing the rigors of annual courtship rituals to perpetuate the species. It makes sense, especially if you look at the species in which 'survival of the fittest' isn't necessarily the bottom line.

I've often thought dolphins were probably more evolved than we are, but all I have to base that on is my perception (and their vestiges of ears). It's a comforting thought for me.

They also organize into packs and kill sharks and other predators to protect their young.

I have actually seen them scuba diving as well. I have seen killer whales while salmon fishing. They are lovely creatures, and it saddens me that people care so little about their world.

Status: offline 		When i was a little girl, rather selfishly enamored of all forms of life, my mother told me a story about a marine biologist friend of hers. He worked with captivated dolphins and one day he witnessed them swimming way too fast in their pool. The dolphins severed their skulls on the pool wall. Since they measure distance very accurately, he was sure they had committed suicide. I believe he redirected his projects after that, and i certainly never asked to go to the aquarium again.

Not sure if this has anything to do with the thread, but ya, dolphins are something altogether else.

It certainly is for hubby. I hate it when he falls asleep with rigormortis around the remote, grrrrrrrr. But then he is in control, right? I guess having the remote is one more aspect of that.

Status: offline 		That brings up a question for the ask a sub/slave board. If your Master or Mistress (although I don't think this is a "Mistress" issue) falls asleep with the remote, can you change the channel or turn off the TV?

I can't, He would wake up in a rage. I just focus on the computer when that happens.

They get there first, start chowing down, and then they get caught in the purse nets that we throw out around the schools of fish when we finally get there. We're not very good at following the "finders keepers" rule outside our own species.

Status: offline 		I always find it funny how people attribute such nobility and superiority to animals and nature. Nature is a horribly vicious place. Wonderful to look at, but not a forgiving place at all. What happens to an animal when it gets sick or injured in nature? It gets ripped to shreds by other animals. When is the last time an animal took another injured animal to a hospital or cared for it till it was well? When is the last time an animal worked at finding a cure for the many diseases that exist in nature? Humans are capable of doing horrendous things, but they are the only species that are capable of doing wonderful things for themselves and others as well.

Elephants arean amazing species... When a calf is born the entire herd will care and nurture that baby... they exhibit great pride of a new arrivel... there are even *nursing females*... who produce milk and babysit the calf to help relieve the mothers duties... they help carry the youngsters across rivers and will actively encircle them to protect them from predetors...

Elephants exhibit a sense of loss and sadness when they come across the dead of their own.

Elephants even enjoy getting drunk and know exactly where to get it.

Meerkats are arranged in highly organized groups... to both protect and lookout for one another.

Pack animals like wolves will always protect young and do not think about their own lives and will instinctively protect an individual they have a bond with... (like dogs)

Gorillas and apes routinely use herbal plants as remedies for sick or injured family members. They have even been known to bury thier dead.

Ants have different hierarcys' within a colony and fight to protect their young and their queen...they remove the dead, to stop infection hurting the living.
