Barack called Joe Biden the next president of the United States in their big rally today. He's an idiot. I think he meant vice president..??

or maybe it was a private joke, based on the virtual certainty that some radical right headcase will take a shot or two at him? Probably one of those survivalist whackos from Idaho who had a serious overstock of ammunition left over from the Y2K collapse of America.

I`m amused when Bush apologists always mention congress giving the president authority to invade,as if that clears the neo-cons of the gross mismanagement of the war

If "mismanagement" were what Biden/Obama keep bitching about, you'd have a point.  Instead, they keep pontificating about how the entire exercise was wrong from start to finish.  Congress voted to authorize Operation Iraqi Freedom, and, per Hillary Clinton, did so without ever having read the intelligence estimates prepared for Congress

If the very idea of going into Iraq is wrong, then every member of Congress that voted for the resolution authorizing force is wrong.  If the very idea of going into Iraq is wrong, then Biden is wrong.

There's lots to blame Bush for about how the invasion was handled, but Congress has no standing to criticize Bush for the decision to invade in the first place.  They own that one right alongside Bush.

Hiya Hippie,

When is the last time Congress declared war and not just a use of force?  Thanks for playing.

How do you know its going to be some radical right headcase, couldn't it be some radical left nutjob that takes a shot?  Oh and don't try to pretend they don't exist.

Have a great night,
Thadius

Biden definitely speaks his mind, well most of the time...

When Congress last declared war is irrelevant. We are discussing this particular military action. As in this century, not the 20th or 19th. And this particular military action has gone way past the initial excuse of disarming Saddam.

Now, I certainly will not deny that there are left-wing whackjobs who might try to assault Mr. Obama with firearms or explosives. I would expect a James Earl Ray to pop up and take the shot, however,  much lke the assassination of Dr. King, and for very similar reasons. It's not coincidental that the majority of hate groups identified by Mo Dees and the SPLC are right-wing. Far-right wingers are much more prone to violence than leftist organizations. And their violence is focused on people, not buildings or other structures. Eric Rudolph targetted abotion doctors, not clinics. He targeted gays, not a gay nightclub. The Unibomber was a right-wing headcase. Here's a quote from Wikipedia about him:
" In his opening and closing sections, Kaczynski addresses leftism as a movement and analyzes the psychology of leftists, arguing that they are "True Believers in Eric Hoffer's sense" who participate in a powerful social movement to compensate for their lack of personal power. He further claims that leftism as a movement is led by a particular minority of leftists whom he calls "oversocialized""

Timothy McVie is another case in point. I note that the right-wingnuts' targets are people, rather than the buildings attacked by The Weather Underground, among others.

No, if it happens, it won't be a Squeeky Fromme. It'll be a James earl Ray.

Personally, I kind of like Joe.  I just think he would have made a better Sect of State than the VP on this ticket.

Wow celticlord....this is the first time I think I have ever agreed with you... all that voted for the war ARE to blame!
Of course you omit that Obama didn't vote for it but, hey, when you are correct you are correct. I always like reading yours and Thadius's posts on politics. Even though My own views would lean a bit left for you, your's and Thadius's posts are always cogent and well thought out.

Must say I agree with that POV. Maybe the long term outcome will be some kind of post-colonial, US foreign policy -- at which point our military spending could be cut from $650B to something like $200B.

The thing is, as Pat Cadell stated not to long ago "If you are going to choose somebody that you ran against, why choose the person that came in last, you should choose the person that showed the strongest."

Watch for an ad to come out at 3am eastern tonight, with the following text.

quote:

“She won millions of votes. But isn’t on his ticket. Why?” an announcer says in the 30-second spot.
The answer? “For speaking the truth.”
You never hear the specifics,” Clinton says.
“On the Rezko scandal,” the voice says.
“We still don’t have a lot of answers about Senator Obama,” Clinton says in footage from the primaries.
“Senator Obama’s campaign has become increasingly negative,” Clinton says in another scene.
The announcer closes by saying “The truth hurt. And Obama didn’t like it.”

Well now that she can't get in through being VP, my guess is she will do everything she can to make sure Obama loses. If he loses, she might have a chance in 2012, he he wins, her chances drop to nothing.

BO, being merely a first term Senator, wasn't around TO vote for it.

I'm dismayed that Obama's pick of Biden is the first step on the road to another demo of the Dems' Hari Kiri at the polls yet again. It is their election to loose again and they are off to a great start. What a bunch of fuck' ups !

Biden, Iraq and Obama's Betrayal

As has been noted elsewhere, one columnist does not speak unilaterally for all erstwhile Democrats.  However, it will be interesting to see how many Democrats share Stephen Zunes' sentiments about the Biden pick.

From what I have read thus far, the talking-head assessment is running about 50-50 on whether Biden adds or detracts from the Democratic ticket.

Who gives a damn what "the talking heads have to say" ? Not me. They were all wrong when they said McCain was washed up as a presidential candidate a few months ago and they all agreed that Hillary was a sure bet to get the Dems' nomination, remember ? Common sense ( remember that, m'laird ? ) will tell you that in picking Odious Joe , the plagiarizing, egotistical, hairplug planting windbag, Washington insider of many years and Iraq war supporter, the Dems have given the GOP endless opportunities to do what they do best, run 15/30 second tv ads and sound bites pointing out the contradictions in what Obama has so far espoused and what Biden represents. The voters aren't as stupid as the talking heads.

I repeat, it was a dumbass move to take on Joe and a sign that the Dems have learned little or nothing from the last few national elections. Or...maybe they've just gotten to just enjoy losing. It takes less work and courage to lose than to take the heat of making policy and taking responsibility, don't it ? They can't be THAT stupid, can they ?

Hopefully no one.  However, what the talking heads say is a rough proxy of certain parts of the American electorate.

Political commentary is not authoritative; it is illuminating to the extent that it reflects sentiments of the ordinary voters.  The question is always "is this representative of voter sentiment?"--a question to which I certainly do not have an authoritative answer.

....seems to me, that Obama declaring his running mate is only half of what we ned to know. Like it or not, this is a two horse race, third parties don't really stand a chance. Until we know who McCains running mate is we can't compare them.....and so we can't really come to a conclusion regarding what kind of election will it be....

*Fast reply*

Just curious, is this the first time ever that a ticket has been made up without a veteran and/or an executive?
