OMG, Sweet Valley High was one of my favorite series...lol.

I've always loved to read, and been quite good at. I was tested for aptitude and comprehension when I was in the 4th grade, and I was graded(?) as having a 12+ grade reading level. I read Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice in the 6th grade, and John Steinbeck's East of Eden (my favorite book to this day) in the 8th.

Here lately I've put down the classics and enjoy Nora Roberts/ J.D. Robb. She's by far the one who keeps my attention these days. Plus, she puts out books almost as fast as I read them. John Sandford and Barbara Taylor Bradford are also among my tops, because they do series, and I like that.

What I'm reading right now:

Terry McMillian's "A Day Late and a Dollar Short"
Tim Sandlin's "Honey, Don't"

Just FYI, I belong to a book club that spits out those authors like Pez, and the prices for hardcover are pretty good for new releases. I've read a few John Sanford but only because I forgot to tell them not send them, lol. Drop me a line if you're interested in it (I don't know if I'm allowed to link to a retailer on here)

Ok, I got so excited about the George R. R. Martin book, I forgot to answer.

Right now, reading 1984, just started Pillars of the World by Anne Bishop, and hoping to get The Time Travellers Wife soon

It's a little yellow and black soft cover: James Joyce " Ulysses" I think the author is Mr Cliff Notes.

Do you know anyone who actually read all of "Ulysses" without cliff notes?

I always have two or more books started at once. Right now I'm reading a fabulous memoir ( I know there is a glut of memoirs on the market today, but this one is much more) by J. R. Moehringer "The Tender Bar" and "My Losing Season" by Pat Conroy.

I highly recommend "The Tender Bar" to one and all.

I just finished The Marketplace, and all I can say is--how in the WORLD did I ever think Anne Rice's "Beauty" stuff was actually good? Seriously, I'm captivated. Now I *must* have The Slave.

I'm also working on Athene: Virgin and Mother in Greek Religion by Karl Kerényi (a Jungian look at the Athena mythos; sort of hard to get my head around) and The Gospel According to Paul by Robin Griffith-Jones, which is also difficult reading; it really should have been two books, or three, instead of one--it's crammed a little too full.

And I'm waiting patiently for my library's copy of A Feast for Crows to arrive. Being the librarian has its advantages

Tried it. I gave up after the second chapter, and just started skimming for potential naughty bits. I tried Finnegans Wake too, with the same result--my apologies to Mr. Joyce, I enjoyed his short stories, but his longer novels were just trainwrecks. (IMO; I don't deny the man's genius, but I've wondered about his motivation.)

Laura Antoniou travels and lectures a lot. We often meet at the same events. Keep an eye out in your local area. She might be coming to a club near you. And she's even better in person.

I did. Was for a course on the ancient works through the ages- from books to film.

Heck, I used to devour Tom Swift books. Not the new ones but the originals "Electric Rifle" "Airship" and the like. Not to mention Nancy Drew and about anything else in print. I almost lived in the library and haunted second hand bookstores.

Wow, I'm surprised nobody here listed the DaVinci Code by Dan Brown. Seemed like it was quite the rage last year.

I'm also a fan of Nora Roberts, adored her Cheasapeake Bay series. I also like historical fiction (North & South series, The Agony & The Ecstacy), legal fiction (Jonathan Kellerman), the marine archaeological/action books by Clive Cussler, and though I hate to admit it, I do get sucked into a Danielle Steel novel every now and then.

For non-fiction, I forget the exact title, but I liked the book by Patricia Cornwell where she solved the Jack the Ripper case. Come to think of it, the book WAS called "Jack the Ripper: Case Closed". lol I also like to read historical biographies....my favorite was one of the diaries of the female pioneers who settled the US. They endured some unimagineable things.

And I read the Sunday funnies

yeah, back in the dark ages, 3rd and 4th year Latin, i think... too bad i don't remembe much of it..lol.

i've discovered one "advantage" of short term memory problems is that i can often read the same book several different times, and it's only a little bit familiar..lol.

i commute 2.5 hours each day to/from work so i read constantly -- my favorite book store is the local second hand place -- am on a first name "footing" with the resident cat there..lol. Right now i'm in various stages, reading a Dr. Phil book that was a present, a modern romance by katherine Stone, and "a citizen's guide to democracy inaction".

Thanks for some good ideas...

Love Dan Brown. I was so wrapped up in DaVinci Code, I called in to work and read the whole thing in 30 hours (including a nap or two). Has he written anything other than that and Angels and Demons? I'd buy any of his books at this point.

i have "Blood Angel" by Stephen King and Ann Rice as well as "Murder at Roissy" by JohnWarren on order. Yummy winter stuff.

"Slaves in the Family". Interesting, but I'm having trouble getting through it.

I just finished reading David Sedaris' "Naked". It's the first book I've read of his, some funny stuff there.

OMG it took me four times....FOUR TIMES!!!... to get through Ulysses. And as I tell my students, I can read anything. lol I even took a summer class at college on it, (the third attempt.) But I'm an educated person. I'd be damned that I was going to let that book win. I finally got my great white whale (to switch allusions.)

I'm in desperate straits and need to get to a bookstore or library Myself.
At present, I am re-reading Jean Auel's "The Shelter of Stones" (5th in the Earth Children series). She takes forever to write, and I am still waiting for the 6th book that was originally supposed to be the last in the series, but now she says there will be more than 6 books. I love the characters and the setting, but I'm afraid I will be dead before she finally finishes. Or maybe she'll be dead.
Davinci Code..I read last year, and loved it. Also by Dan Brown, if you haven't read it, "Angels and Demons". I recommend it. Excellent, fast paced and chock full of history. I always loved history.

I am getting ready to read "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire", for the 3rd time. I just seen the movie and like the book more for it's detail, though the movie was the best so far, for Harry Potter fans like me.
