A few spelling mistakes here or there is fine. But if they use a word that sounds similar to another with a completely different meaning, I sometimes have to pause and wonder what they were trying to say when I come across it in a sentence. If there are so many mistakes that I have to go back and re-read a sentence several times, those profiles/posts make my head hurt and I'm going to skip over them.

For those bad spellers out there, try using the Firefox browser. It has a built in spell checker. If whatever you wrote has red underlines all over the place, fix it before submitting. Only problem though, is the photos buttons on the other side doesn't seem to work... guess you'd have to choose to either look more intelligent or perv the pictures, but can't do both.

I like it too! If Beyonce can make up words ("bootylicious" ugh), then I can make up words. Whorny. Love it.

There's an amusing cyber "law" which states that any time you attempt to correct or criticize someone's mistakes, especially with spelling or grammar, you will inevitably make that same mistake yourself in the process.

Thank you, my thoughts exactly.  Could it be some thing as simple as "Karma"?

I also have far from perfect grammar and typos do occur in my writing. I do notice grammatical errors and spelling errors in profiles, but it never occurs to me to eliminate someone based on something as silly as grammar.
Character and intent have much more effect on my choices.

opposingtwilight -> RE: Grammar and spelling? (8/27/2008 10:10:03 AM)

I don't generally run around "grading" people's communications. However, sometimes its so bad that you can't read it without hurting your brain. Thats where I draw the line.

It's McKean's Law, or sometimes known as Muphrey's Law (note spelling).

I learn weird things by reading facebook.  Or perhaps I just have weird friends.

In reply to the original post:

I don't really know. To be honest I think that an effective command of the language (while important) may not always be shown through text. You'd be surprised how many sayings and such are spelled wrong or have the wrong words in them entirely when some of the most intelligent people type them.

My rule of thumb: if I can read it and its coherent I can usually let a few typos or spelling errors slide. Nothing is more annoying than a blatant disregard for grammar though.

Heh, I was watching myself so carefully while writing this, afraid of any mistake on pain of being criticized XD that's how I always feel when responding to forum threads about spelling and/or grammar... anywhere!

littlemisssnarf -> RE: Grammar and spelling? (9/2/2008 12:37:26 PM)

has nobody heard of dyslexia???

good grief some are so quick to judge a book by it's miss spelt cover!!

DesFIP -> RE: Grammar and spelling? (9/2/2008 7:42:32 PM)

Dyslexics, people with learning disabilities, and people for whom English is not their first language get treated a lot better if they include that information.

Adding a sig line that states you have a ld is really not that difficult. Omitting giving that information while expecting your reader to magically know it rarely winds up being a successful strategy in the game of meeting compatible others online.

aravain -> RE: Grammar and spelling? (9/2/2008 8:54:42 PM)

Let alone the fact that dyslexia isn't something that would, necessarily, make text unreadable, which is what some people (i.e. me) are saying is their only off.

SarahnNV -> RE: Grammar and spelling? (9/2/2008 9:35:32 PM)

I tend to overlook misspellings if the message is one I need to receive.  However, I was once in contact with someone who knew it 'hurt' my brain to see it so he would deliberately put errors in just to make me cringe.  And thank you for pointing out    it's vs. its,    your vs. you're.   Those ones bug me!

I have noticed in the recent spelling threads, several people stating they had dyslexia and I didn't have any problems reading and understanding their posts.  I don't worry about typos and minor spelling errors. It's when I have to go back and reread a post 3 or 4 times to try and decipher what is being said.

For example " to be truthful i pay you no mind because you nean me not MATTER. "

apiercedkitty -> RE: Grammar and spelling? (9/3/2008 10:03:19 AM)

i can overlook the occasional spelling mistakes - hell, i make them (i do try to go back and edit for them when i find them though). i'm much more likely to reply negatively when i'm having a hard time even making out what the original ideal was in the first place. i have a harder time forgiving the incorrect usage of words such as: you're/your, there/their/they're, etc. And yeah, i do start to tug at my own hair when i see someone wants to find a "dominate." That's a deal breaker for me... lol

pdv99 -> RE: Grammar and spelling? (9/5/2008 2:15:59 AM)

Well, we are all human, so we can all make typographic and grammatical errors. Posts are generally conversational pieces, so I'd apply less formal rules of grammar. I frequently start sentences in a post with link words such as "but" or "and", as I might in spoken conversation, but which would be grammatically incorrect in a formal document.

However, I do take the quality of writing as an indicator of someone's personality and level of education - and that can attract or repel (LOL - not "detract").

If you spot typos or grammatical errors in MY profile please feel free to correct me......and if you are dominant and in the UK and you'd like to reinforce your point with a little corporal punishment.......

On the other hand, to reject someone because of the odd typo in a profile may seem a little anal - good profiles tend to be dynamic documents that may not get proofed as much as they might. How often do you read your OWN profile? Really? Isn't that just narcissism?

Peter

Dnomyar -> RE: Grammar and spelling? (9/5/2008 3:40:22 AM)

I dissagree with you pdv99. A persons spelling has nothing to do with their level of education.

I have dyslexia and I would not for a moment add that to my sig.  You want people with disabilities to walk around with little signs around their necks saying *I am autistic* or *I only have one kidney*?  Whatever next - coloured badges? tattoes?[:'(]

If someone cannot have the decency to give a person a little leeway without jumping down their throat because of a spelling mistake or typo etc - then they are completely shallow and not worth my time.  It certainly sorts out the wheat from the chaff for me and I am not here to cater for the lazy.

This thread deserves an ED quote.

"Grammar Nazis are prone to a curious form of geek cat fighting wherein they try to outdo one another by finding and correcting increasingly more obscure errors in each other's comments. Whoever identifies the final and most obscure error (preferably the one that requires a consultation with a resident linguist at Cambridge to understand) wins, and evidently has the bigger e-penis. Should you ever encounter a Grammar Nazi flame war, it is highly recommended that you do not attempt to drive or operate heavy machinery for several hours afterwards as there is no experience on earth quite as mind-crushingly boring.

Grammar Nazism is not to be confused with its egalitarian cousin, Grammar Socialism, in which everyone is free to [f up] the English language until all of the punctuation and caps get jumbled and eventually fall out.
"
