To gleefully misquote Terry Pratchett - "It's not what a domme looks like - it's what a domme BE."

Yes, I like my gear. Yes, I like dressing to the nines on occasion, and also redefining what "dressing to the nines" means for me.  But frankly, the day I need a costume to feel worthy or capable of handling authority or power over someone is the day I hang up my toybag - because there's something missing in me that I have to have in order to run a scene or a person competently.

WOOOT Terry Prachett!!!!

Anyway, I onyl dress in my fetish wear at the fetish shows.......because frankly. I LIKE dressing the "part". For the sheer fact i look effin awesome in vinyal. But thats me. Any other day of the week you get my in jeans and tshirts and flip flops

wondering how many of you would fit this category...wild and strong like no one might suspect...privately creative and demanding and powerful....but publicly nerdy and socially awkward...slightly introverted...maybe a bit aloof...
do you feel funny wearing the domme costume?  are the boots and vinyl a  plagiarized male comic book fantasy in your mind...or a useful tool to transcend the nilla?

be truthful and sincere...

is it about what it looks like - or what it is?

I would clarify that I am more geeky than nerdy, but I'm pretty sure that makes me nerdy.  The domme costume...meh. I might be in a mood to dress like that sometimes, but rarely. Honestly, I prefer naked...just makes everything easier to my mind and I'm afraid I'm terribly practical for the most part. There's nothing to transcend for me; I don't think or react in a vanilla way and never have.

MMarque -

Could not have said it any better myself.  I own fetish wear, I love it, and I would buy a new piece a week if I could.  I'm also a larger woman and one of the reasons I continue to engage in fetish dressing is in part simply to defeat the notion that BBW Dommes cannot wear it and/or that we look crappy in it.  Do I have to hunt for most of it in a size and style that flatters?  You betcha.  Does it take more time out of my day/week than throwing on jeans and a T-shirt and picking up my playbag?  Damn skippy.  Is it the "hot Domme of my dreams" played-out stereotype?  To a certain degree, yes.  But I simply don't care.  I love to dress to impress, always have, always will.  If some want to read me as a pretentious "likely" Domme as a result of it, so be it.  But I won't give it up and I also won't accept the notion that enjoying my love for fetish means that I'm catering to the whims of men. (Bolding added - MM)

I think this is the gist of it.  Can a woman want sex or kink or to look beautiful and seductive, because she wants it?  The whole question of whether a woman owns her own desires.

Of course, our desires and self-image are individual.  It is whether you're bold enough to be what you desire to be.

I can certainly appreciate the beauty in going against type.  The appeal of that comes from someone being who they are, naturally.

I have to say, having watched my girl who is a switch, there is something really sexy about a girl dressed as alice in wonderland sadistically topping a groveling man.....who needs latex or leather...

Well, that's just hot.  As to who needs more archetypal domme wear, as I said above, do what comes naturally, do and wear and be what you love.  It's your secret weapon of seduction.

Protip: Actual tin is more effective than aluminum.

This is the main reason why many people believe that tinfoil hats don't work.

From my point of view....I just love a Domme who does not have to feel she has to wear fetish wear to get what she wants.  A woman who is just at home having her slave lick her flip flops or whip his ass in a bathrobe ...I Love the vanilla look!  To me it is so much more real and rewarding.

Well Blueskyboy, I don't believe there is a uniform. I sometimes feel awkward in the "cliche" outfit of (p)leather, boots, chains etc. I find being naked is the best "uniform" ever. Dominance comes from within so I say wear what ever brings out the inner bad-ass. Confidence baby, confidence.

To me, a woman's dominance clearly comes from within, regardless of what she's wearing.  That said, there's no doubt I appreciate it when she gets dressed up in "Domwear", provided of course that she enjoys it along with the effect it can have on me.  If she doesn't like to wear it, she still gets the same service from me.

Dont get Me wrong, I enjoy wearing the fishnet body outfit, but most of the time I prefer to wear nothing(in the end, all is coming off to where I feel comfy anyway and I MUST be comfy) or just a plain winnie the pooh t-shirt and nothing underneath :-P~.
