OK CM political peoples,

Some of the political threads here are so nasty in the past couple of weeks that there is just no sense in replying to them.

So here is a new thread to answer the questions about Senator Obama's qualifications, experience and accomplishments.

If you have additional information please provide your sources and post your links.

Please, no personal attacks!  Don't make me get medieval on your ass!

From The Zoo

"Senator Obama has sponsored or co-sponsored 570 bills in the 109th and 110th Congress.

Senator Obama has sponsored or co-sponsored 15 bills that have become LAW since he joined the Senate in 2005.

Senator Obama has also introduced amendments to 50 bills, of which 16 were adopted by the Senate.

His record is in fact quite impressive for a junior Senator from Illinois.

Most of his legislative effort has been in the areas of:
  • Energy Efficiency and Climate Change (25 bills)
  • Health care (21 bills) and public health (20 bills)
  • Consumer protection/labor (14 bills)
  • The needs of Veterans and the Armed Forces (13 bills)
  • Congressional Ethics and Accountability (12 bills)
  • Foreign Policy (10 bills)
  • Voting and Elections (9 bills)
  • Education (7 bills)
  • Hurricane Katrina Relief (6)
  • The Environment (5 bills)
  • Homeland Security (4 bills)
  • Discrimination (4 bills) "

V,
Do a search over at the thomas site... it will give you a more accurate number and which he actually wrote.
Many of his ammendments and bills were actually "to pay honor to..." types of resolutions.

There are 3 law type bills that I know of that he has taken part in writing, the rewrting of the Lugar-Nunn bill (insert his name for Nunn) on nuclear proliferation, the Global Poverty Act S.2433, and an ethics reform bill that he was working on with McCain which he voted against.

The thomas congressional search site show all major actions, sponsors, the text, and sometimes committee notes.  It is the official library of congress site  it can be found at          thomas . loc . gov  (had to space it out because CM doesn't like posting of multiple subdomains, it adds **** and doesn't allow the link to click through)  The search there, shows a total of 129 bills and resolutions that his name is associated with.  The site has a simple drop down menu to select the senator or congressman you want to search for.  I highly recommend folks use it, or at least check it out.

Anytime.

If you still can you may want to edit the spelling of Senator in the thread title.

Ven - I just loved what Bita said about Obama's accomplishments and experience, so I shall quote her verbatim. I hope she doesn't mind.

"Obama has the experience of being a unique American. He has lived in his skin for 40+ years and has attained skill sets and abilities. He has the experience of being married and having a family. He has experienced opportunities which he has not wasted such as higher education. He has the experience of helping other people find jobs, he has the experience of helping kids find direction. He has the experience of sitting among others and voicing his opinions, concerns, agreements and objections to legislation which has an impact at the state and federal levels. He has the experience of failing and succeeding .. of love, indifference, hate, lust, glory and saddness. He has the experience of having traveled many roads, of standing fast and of changing his mind. He has the human experience ..as do we all. He is flawed and perfect, mediocre, exciting and boring. In his future, whether elected or not, he will experience exalted highs and ultimate lows, he will, ultimately experience death. He's an adult American who has reached the minimum age requirement to run for office. That qualifies him for the presidency. If he can inspire enough people to vote for him, then he will have earned his office and will proceed to lead the nation on the path he believes is best."

Bita summarised this beautifully. Obama has mobilised public opinion, and brought about a current of hope for the future. The votes he gets in November won't be coming out of indifference: people will most definitely be voting for him, not against someone else. This election will stay on record as one of the most divisive in history: but in the end, I think he will have unified much of the country, that which voted for him, with a common goal, whether he gets elected or not. That's one hell of an accomplishment.

Senator Obama had 4 bills pass the Senate in the 109th Congress:
  1. A resolution to congratulate the Chicago White Sox on winning the 2005 World Series Championship. (SR 291)
  2. A resolution recognizing the historical significance of Juneteenth Independence Day and expressing the sense of the Senate that history should be regarded as a means for understanding the past and solving the challenges of the future. (SR 516)
  3. A resolution designating July 13, 2006, as "National Summer Learning Day". (SR 529)
  4. A bill to promote relief, security, and democracy in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. (S 2125)
Senator Obama had another 4 bills pass the Senate in the 110th Congress:
  1. S.CON.RES.25: A concurrent resolution condemning the recent violent actions of the Government of Zimbabwe against peaceful opposition party activists and members of civil society.
  2. S.RES.133: A resolution celebrating the life of Bishop Gilbert Earl Patterson.
  3. S.RES.268: A resolution designating July 12, 2007, as "National Summer Learning Day".
  4. S.RES.600: A resolution commemorating the 44th anniversary of the deaths of civil rights workers Andrew Goodman, James Chaney, and Michael Schwerner in Philadelphia, Mississippi, while working in the name of American democracy to register voters and secure civil rights during the summer of 1964, which has become known as "Freedom Summer".
These are the bills he sponsored that made it through the Senate.

So, you are saying we need more laws?

Or more serious resolutions?

Ok, well I am  jumping out of these threads for now.

We all can go back and forth and back and forth. You will value what you want. I will value what I want

Obama's biggest sin is not having been born on time to get captured and held prisonner in Vietnam. His other big sin is not having joined the military . Otherwise, he is an accomplishment in and of itself. He embodies accomplishment, he is the incarnation of the American dweam. He's nearly half the age of the other guy, so obviously he hasn't had as many opportunities to 'do stuff', but given enough time I'm pretty sure he will. I dig Obama :-) . Shame I can't vote for him. But my entourage certainly will (departing heavily from the New Hampshire voting tradition). Obama 2008.

Obama can speak coherently, putting his sentences together intelligently, that puts him ahead of Reagan, Bush and McCain.

Meat,
but Bush went to "YALE".
And Reagan was and McCain are a lot more interesting!
Can I get a "Cum-Bay-Yah!"

I'm interested to know what more interesting means.

As for Bush and Yale, daddy had money and connections.

Precisely how does he embody accomplishment?

If you can't see it now, you won't ever see it, so I fail to see why you keep on charging at this door when you know it won't ever open. As Jeffff put it so succintly, you won't change your mind, and neither will others... draw your own conclusions.

That does not answer the question.

What has he done--what specific deeds are to his credit--that he may be said to "embody accomplishment"?

It is a straightforward question, with a straightforward answer.

CL, perhaps Kittin is reffering to "S-2433?"
"Cum-Bay-Ah, Cum-Bay-Ah."

Sweetie please, you don't really want to hear them. We all know this, we really do. Your blinders are on so tightly you are incapable of forming a fresh outlook. And last I checked, neither kittin nor myself are obligated to appease you by producing information you cannot process. Thank god.
