I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – envy is at the root of leftism.

Envy of what?  Wealth?  There are many wealthy leftists.  George Soros comes to mind off the top of my head.

One thing Cindy McCain is known for is the work she does for charity.

Well let's see...she didn't get the money from any government programs.  Didn't save up all of her food stamps to sell for a profit.  Didn't take any handouts.  It's her money.  If she can afford it and chooses to buy bling with it, then that's her right.  Whether it was inherited or not isn't the issue.  It's her money to do with as she pleases.  I see no problem with it.   Some people sound jealous.  Some people sound as if she should be giving it away.  Why?  If people want more money in their lives then get out there and work for it.  Hell...my dad worked three jobs at one point to pay the bills and put food on the table.  I can't believe people are actually critical of any one who is wealthy.  Blah.  Ridiculous.

I mean how many Hollywood boob jobs could this selfish woman have paid for
that would have lifted the bustline and self-esteem of so many downtrodden?

Sniff.

Thank you for proving my point. How dare she have an expensive dress when there are starving people in the world! Never mind how many lives she has changed or saved by providing jobs. Never mind how many lives she has changed or saved with her charitable donations or by founding the American Voluntary Medical Team.

The argument is absurd in and of itself because it can be applied to anything beyond basic needs. How many lives could be changed or saved if you hadn’t on spent money on ____________ (fill in the blank). Unless you are willing to live only on bread and water and sleep on a dirt floor at night, then the same argument can be applied to you and nearly everyone else.

Unless you want to live in a world of six billion dirt poor (but incredibly altruistic) peons, you’re are going to have to accept the fact that some people are going to have it better than others.

One more thing – how many people benefitted from the manufacture and sale of that dress? It didn’t pop out of thin air so somebody got paid for it, and at several stages (production of the fibers, sewing the dress, transporting it, etc.). In other words – jobs. Jobs that paid money. Money that may well have changed or saved some lives.

The wealthy leftists, like George Soros are driven by their arrogant belief in their own intellectual and moral superiority (there is also the desire for power but that is a driving force behind most ideologies).

As for the rank and file, however, envy of other’s wealth (and status) is indeed the driving force. Why do you think the Democratic Party is always promising to tax the rich? They know that it will appeal to the envy of the rank and file.

"Vote for us and will tax (read: punish) those rich people for having more than you!"

No matter what you say, I'm not going to feel sorry for a person who's basically having a charmed life and a rather easy time. I'd love to own so much bling, especially if I didn't have to work for it, but her undiplomatic and untactful choice of a frock is still a subject of much amusement to me, especially in the light of her pious speech about the cold hard destitute streets of Calcutta  .

Kdsub summed it up: "Mais, qu'ils mangent de la brioche!". Cindy's lucky they did away with the guillotine  .

That is what Vanity Fair editors estimate was the value of what Cindy McCain was wearing on Monday alone.

What do you think of this?

I think it's a dress that's worth $313,100.00...and she was wearing it.

(Why the holy fuck do you care?)

Well, she probably really has no idea what the hell Lucky Charms are, but I'm
sure she'd agree they're magically delicious.

She bought a dress and jewelery that she liked and could afford. She also adopted a child that was going to die while on a medical mission. I think her karma can stand expensive clothes and bling.

I've been on medical missions - they aren't photo op material.  They are 12 hour days, and odd food, and hoping that you aren't going to end up worshipping the porcelein goddess - if there is any porcelein!  More often than not, its a long drop, or nothing at all. If there is running water thats a bonus.  The reason you go back is because you can actually make a major difference in someones life.  Not a whole lot of people, but you can make the world of difference to one child, or woman or man.
Not everyone is cut out to do medical missions.
My hat is off to her and her husband. How many men would after being presented with a baby, and being told that this is your new daughter, would be so accepting.  Not too many  i suspect.

If she wants to spend her money the way she wants to , more power to her. I'm thinking in a democracy, she has that right. And i will defend that to my last breath.

and thank you to the two posters that corrected my misinformation.

I'm not asking you (or anyone else) to. I’m questioning the motivations behind people criticizing her for the dress. I don’t believe that it is a genuine concern for the poor. Rather it is an example of what I call the "Hands Across America" effect.

In the mid-eighties (just when I was beginning to pay attention to politics) there was an attempt to form the largest human chain in history by having people hold hands in a chain that stretched across the continental United States in order to raise money to fight hunger.

While watching the news one night with my grandfather (the wisest man I have ever known) the question was brought up on wether President Regan would participate. I asked my grandfather his opinion and he said it didn’t matter.

"If he participates, people will accuse him of only doing it for show and that he doesn’t really care about hungry people. If he doesn’t participate, those same people will say it is proof that he doesn’t care about hungry people."

This never give an inch attitude permeates political "debate," and this dress flap is merely the latest example. Ask yourself and be honest, if Cindy McCain came out in an inexpensive dress would you praise her for her tact or would you dismiss it as a lame attempt to present a false solidarity with average folks?

SPEAK ENGLISH OR DIE!!!!!!

Okay, before anyone freaks out – that was humor in the ironic/self-deprecating mold, used to cover up the fact that I don’t speak French.

Yes she is, isn’t she. Sooner or later every ideology – if it gains sufficient power – seeks a final solution to the ________ (fill in the blank) problem.

I suspect that when the woman presenting it can easily pay for a full-time nanny, housekeeper, private boarding school, etc. etc. etc., the number goes up

sr,

That phrase is very offensive to many people on this forum and I for one am damned tired of hearing it used here.

ohhhhh   -   the cynicism is too much!              and sure, maybe she had a nanny etc etc, but she adopted this child, and raised it to adulthood. That suggests to me that she is a good human being - who has a lot of money.  Which bit don't you like?     Oh oh - i know - its the lot of money bit.    you know , some people just win the birth lottery. It isn't personal, its just the way things are.

I would like pots of money too, and live the life of the rich and unknown. But i'm not , and i thoroughly enjoy the life i have.  And envy is one of the seven deadly sins - it kills your soul.

Thank you again for the link, dc.  I personally don't care what she wears or how much it costs.  As far as the cost of fashion and jewelry goes, pick up some copies of Vogue, Vanity Fair and the like and read the prices for the photo shoots.  Some items are so expensive that you have to call the designer's sales office to inquire on the prices.

(As a general social comment, women are still largely valued by their appearance and that is part of the reason that so much is spent on their clothing, accessories and jewelry.)

Can you imagine what the lefties would have written in the liberal media if she had come onstage naked?

I understand she couldn't afford panties for a month to wear that.

What?  This old thing?

Old money, old dress, old pussy.............like ancient age on the rocks.  neat.
