It can be really disheartening when people say something like... it's simple, just do "this."

If it was really that simple, it would already be done.  It's not that simple.  For those that advocate just taking in fewer calories, that truly doesn't work for everyone.  It may work for you, and that's great, but your body is not my body and it doesn't work for me.  And many people fall into the trap of thinking if they cut back on calories a bit, that's good... if that cut back a lot, that's better.  It's not when it puts your body into starvation mode where is conserves every calorie it gets.

For the people who recommend a quarter of a plate of carbs, and specifically say potatoes, bread... that doesn't work for some of us.  I cannot eat potatoes or bread.  It doesn't matter what else is on my plate, if I'm eating potatoes and bread, I'm gaining weight.  It didn't work when I had gestational diabetes either... potatoes of any kind made my sugars shoot thru the roof; I had to get my carbs from salad.

Please don't insult us by saying... it's simple.  It's not.

Hi Proudsub, Actually, what i described that you quoted is what occurs when someone on Atkins does it correctly through the stages and reaches maintenance.  From what you have stated it sound like t i guess in the end what i was trying to say is true, when many plans reach a maintenance phase after you have gone through the steps correctly of the plan you choose, most of it does teach you a correct way of eating for life.  Where people fail is when they pick and choose what parts of a plan to follow and don't follow through correctly.   Also what you haev stated within South beach is pretty much what a person learns while on atkins and moves through the stages, Atkins breaks you down for 2 weeks and then starts teaching you how to eat correctly.  Most people look at the first 2 weeks and freak out because of the # of carbs allowed in those 2 weeks and not the food he wants you to eat to accomplish that.   I enjoy low carb because i can make a lot of my favorite things alternatively and still stay on plan.  I don't know much about South Beach except for what i have heard about it, so i can't compare, Atkins is what i am familiar with.

In my struggle its come down to one very easy but the hardest thing i have ever had to do -- a decision, a decision to follow through and focus and realize this isn't a diet but a way to learn to eat correctly so i can enjoy things that aren't necessarily correct in the future in moderation lol instead of my OMG the world is gonna end tomorrow and i will never get pizza again syndrome lol.

Briena -> RE: weight loss (9/6/2008 11:41:00 AM)

Figure out your BMR.  You can use a simple math formula to figure this out... It is as follows:

BMR (Basic Metabolic Rate) Women= 655+(4.36xW)+(4.57xH)-(4.7xA)
BMR Men= 66+(6.22xW)+(12.7xH)-(6.8xA)

W= Weight
H= Height (in total inches not feet, like Im 5'6" so I am 66 inches tall)
A= Age

Then multiply it by the activity index here:
Light activity (normal every day activities)= 1.3
Moderate activity (exercise 2-3 times a week)= 1.4
Very active (exercise 4-7 times a week)= 1.6
Extreamely active (exercise more than 7 times per week)= 1.8

The total that you get is what you need to maintain your current weight.  If you want to lose weight, and not maintain what you are at, subtract the calorie intake that you should be at.  If you want something moderate try only taking out like 500 calories, or like 4 or 5 cookies.  If you want more than talk to a doctor about an apropriate weight loss calorie count.  If you have a high daily calorie intake, removing something like 1000 calories from your diet is not extream.  The BMR gives you the amount of calories that you intake on a daily basis, keeping your weight the same, it is NOT the amount of calories that you should be intaking.

If you want a healthy way to lose weight, and a way to monitor your progress you can go to
www.mypyramid.gov

This is also the system that the military uses to help service members lose weight.

Keep a log of your calorie intake.  Start out just writing down everything that you eat on a normal day.  Not dieting.  Then when you start your diet program keep track of everything, even the little indescretions lol.  The more you eat with exercise the better your metabolism will be.  The less you eat the slower your metabloism gets to preserve the calories you have.  Your body goes into starvation mode.  You need to eat smaller, HEALTHY meals 5-8 times per day.  This is including snacks.  Eating fruits and veggies for snacks instead of something like chips.  You should have a meal about every four hours, with a snack of fruit or veggie in between.  If you dont eat small snacks in between larger meals you are starving by the time you get there.  That causes you to eat more of the large meal, adding on mor calories than needed.  Try going to the website for more information.  They really do help lots of people, without having to go on some crazy diet.  This is the same program I am suppose to be on... I just keep making excuses LOL!  Plus when your gym doesnt have a day care and youre a stay home mom to a three year old, it makes working out harder....  But Ill get there eventually :D.  Once I start, my calorie intake will be around 1800 per day, cuz Im a fattie :), and Im looking for extream weight loss result in the end.  You should drop 1-2lbs per week, thats a healthy rate.  Set realistic short term goals, then set a long term goal using the short term ones as steps to reach your long term goal.  We biggies can do it, as long as we set our minds to it, DETERMINATION IS KEY!  Good luck on your weight loss!

If you have a lot to lose, take baby steps.  I have a lot to lose.  My goal is 5-10 lbs at a time.  If I look at the big picture, it's overwhelming.  Good luck.  :)

CalifChick -> RE: weight loss (9/6/2008 1:10:49 PM)

Briena, the BMR formula just proves to me that it doesn't work for everyone.  The number I came up with would, and has in the past, caused me to gain weight at a rate of about 5-7 pounds per month.  The focus is all on calories and that doesn't do anything for many of us.  But hey, if it works for you, great.

You will never hear me say "its simple"
you're right...it sure isn't
and something I have realized I will spend the rest of my life having to be concious of..

I use to use words like  battle   fight   struggle   deprive   lose
fail   bad food/good food    bad me/ good me
I realized finally that thinking that way made > food my enemy
and pushing against it merely gave it more power.

I had to learn to change my thinking about  ie my  "relationship with"  food   or I would always feel like a victim when I ate......and I'm human > I need to eat to live.

It took me nearly 35 years and being very near death and in a wheelchair  to truly understand my emotional thinking was what was killing me, not merely the food..

Briena -> RE: weight loss (9/6/2008 1:35:29 PM)

No it doesnt.  It also includes your fat intake, as well as carbs and protine.   All you do is multiply your total daily caloric intake by .25, then divide it by 9.  That should give you your daily fat intake per grams.  1 calorie is 9 grams of fat.  So for me, going by my supposed daily calorie intake it would be

1800 x .25 = 450
450/9 = 50

So I should be eating 50 grams of fat in my diet.  Your fat intake should only be about 25% of your caloric intake.   Even when you hire professional trainers they go by this program when calculating out how much you should be eating.  Ive hired many LOL!  I must say though, this guy Jessie at ballys in Mission Valley was the BEST one I had.  I lost a ton of weight with him... PLUS HES SO FREAKIN HOT!  So that was always a bonus :D

Level -> RE: weight loss (9/6/2008 1:38:05 PM)

That formula does NOT work for everyone. Not even remotely. The "pros" have led too many people down a disastorous path.

Lose weight for yourself not someone else.  No diet or change in eating habit will ever last forever unless you do it for yourself only.

I am 150 #s overwieght, and I am losing. (Its not really a whole 150 anymore - and it used to be more than that. The rounding is not in my favor at the moment, but it will be again, so no worries)

Please forgive me while I Rant all over your head.

"whatever you do, do not stop having self distructive behavoir that is ruining your life and health and will eventually kill you, and not quickly, decades early, and, in the mean time, is probably doing disastourous things to your social affairs, not to mention your energy and abily to do what you want - DO NOT CHANGE THESE BEHAVOIRS FOR THE WRONG REASON.'

Here's a hint- there is NO wrong reason. Lose weight for whatever reason works.

Master rewards me at regular intervals. Making Master proud is a HUGE reason for me to lose weight. Bein sexy on Master's arm is HUGE motivation. My other motivation - i want to MOVE. I want to go hiking and backpacking and repelling and spelunking. (right now, I'd get stuck in some damn nitch that some smart ass had named 'Fat Man's Misery.' and that would be the end of the slut)

My former Master said he wanted me to lose weight - but he made it DAMN challenging. I had to be losing for the RIGHT reasons - not for him. Not to be attactive. Not to be sexy. Not for clothes. Not for energy and getting active. Not for anything pleasent or enjoyable. NO - it had to be for my health. I have been dying for 20 years, but, suddenly, my health is going to be important enough to overcome the urge for the next bowl of icecream? yea, right.

USE WHAT WORKS.

I am personally a HUGE fan of WW and Curves. They are awesome. WW teaches you to eat ANYTHING - but eat it right. That is a change you can live with for life.

However, as someone else said, there is no right answer that works for everyone. Masters former slave took it off for him with Mutrasystem. I have a Biosister that just lost 100 #s on Nutrasystem. Another Biosister that just lost 75# on 'the idoit proof diet' (which i really do think is the stupidest diet i have every read or hear tell of).
Do what works.

I belong to a Yahoo group - [email protected] - which is for subs and slaves who are losing. If you want a penfriend, you can write me - but please read all the way to the bottom of my profile (or skip to the bottom) where there are directions for actually getting in touch with me, since I am caught in the Collarme bug that won't let me send out mail from here.

I dont remember saying anywhere in my post that it works for everyone.  I stated that it doesnt just count calories but also fat, protine, and carbs.  I also said it was the main method that the professional trainers used, and I said it is the method that the military uses as well.  I never said it works for everyone and youre 100% going to lose weight if you do this.  Please dont put words in my mouth.  There is NO 100% amazing method to losing weight, if there was everyone would be fit and thin.  I dont believe in absolutes and supposed absolute weight loss programs are not absolute.

Diets and me do not get along. i move my body a lot and do many different forms of exercise, but love just to dance. i have collections of music that i love to dance to and will put them on, 45 minutes later i am awake, alert, happy and my body says thank you.

Maybe it's my age, but i learned nothing is forever, so i best have a healthy dose of will within me to direct me in life. Sir is great in telling me things to do that will improve my life in many  areas, which i appreciate it. Sir appreciates that i do not look at him as someone who is going to be my willpower and savior.

Best of luck and blessings

AnnaOfAramis -> RE: weight loss (9/6/2008 3:26:35 PM)

Here is another formula for metabolic rate out of a college textbook:

Divide your weight by 2.2 to get your weigh in kilograms.
If you are female multiply by 0.9 (this accounts for the difference between men's higher metabolism).
Multiply by 24 (hours in a day). This will give you your daily Basal Metabolic Rate- what you would burn if just sleeping for 24 hours.
To account however for activity, add: 40-50% if you are sedentary (typist), 55-65% if you do light activity (teacher), 65-75% for moderate activity (nurse), 75-100% for heavy activity (construction).

This will give you the daily calorie requirement to MAINTAIN your current weight. To lose 1 lb of fat per week, subtract 500 calories. To lose 2lbs of fat per week, subtract 1000 calories.

I havent read the whole thread so I am sorry if this has been said before but my advise (and I battle my weight everyday and have sine I was a chlild) is make little changes week by week, like drinking more water one week, then cutting  out fast food, then next week eating more fruit ect, dont try to do everything at once otherwise it can be completely overwhelming and you an lose interest/motivation really quick.

And I did read the suggestion of mini goals that is a fantastic idea and then when you reach them reward yourself with a massage, new hairstyle, new out fit ect.
but like others have said find it within you but by all means acept all motivation your Master gives you.

OrionTheWolf -> RE: weight loss (9/6/2008 4:17:16 PM)

I got to about 240 pounds once in my life. I cut out all red meat, only drank water for a beverage, ate lots of fruits and vegies, stayed away from fast food, and increased my activity to waling about 4 to 5 miles a day. Then after two months of that I went to seafood or white meat twice a month, then increased to meat once a week at the six month stage. I slowly worked red meat back into my diet, and I do mean slowly. Now I eat a balanced meal, eat only until I am no longer hungry (most of us over eat and do not know it because we were raised to clean our plates), get plenty of exercise and drink plenty of water.

There is no sure fire way, as each person is different. Start by eating healthier and smaller portions in combination with increase in activity.

This is the correct answer. There can be a number of reasons why people are overweight. Cutting calories and exercising doesn't work for people that have thyroid problems, insulin resistance, etc. After you've had the blood work and the physical, then go and find something that works for you.

I can cut calories and exercise until the cows come home and won't lose weight. The only thing that works for me is what I call "No white" Which equals no bread, no potato, no rice, no sugar, no flour, no sugar. A reduced carb, reduced fat diet. Green leafy veggies, combined with lean protein. A combination of South Beach, The Insulin Resistance Diet and the PCOS Diet.

I found something that may help you lose weight on http://www.earthclinic.com . I take 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar mixed with water twice a day. Its the raw unfiltered kind (Braggs) I found in a heath food store. It seems to make you feel full quicker so you eat less. Stay away from monosodium glutamate and aspartame as these suppress the feeling of being full so you tend to eat more. I have lost 6 pounds since taking it with no change in what I eat or level of exercise. Earthclinic has testimonials of lots of people it has helped. Its great for skin complexion also. One thing though - it tastes terrible. [:@]

Thanks for the link, sounds interesting. You said you lost 6 lbs with no change in what you eat, but the vinegar is supposed to make you eat less,  so have you noticed you are eating less?
