I just read AAkasha response to a the thread entitled "Should I Give Up".  The op is a DJ and was asking if that was the problem.
AAkasha said that his screen name was a turn off, which is perfectly fine.
My Question is, do you really pay that much attention to screen names?  Does a screen name make you look or make you shy away?
I guess I never looked at it that way, but I guess it could have a tremendous influence on the reader....am I right or wrong?

For the most part, the screen-name isn't a big turn-off for me unless it is clearly endorsing one of the fetishes that I don't enjoy or have hard-limited... usually, I'll check the profile first, though -- but a one-liner from a person with a fetish-nick that emphasizes one of my limits, where the message also focused on that... yeah, that would pretty much turn me off.

To me, a screen name says a lot about the person and the way they think. It can be a big turnoff for me and also affects the way I read their message, as to if I feel they're serious or not.

"I'd like to know you better" coming from a person with the screenname 69uallnitelong sounds like a joke compared to
"I'd like to know you better" coming from a person named MissCassandra or whatever

Depends on the name.  Clearly, two different reactions between a name "buttlickingloser3" and "bendmywill," right?

LOL...I get your point AAkasha.  I guess I am kind of like CallaFirestormBW, I read their profile to see what they are all about.  Mabye I need to change my screen name to something else, so as not be so fetish oriented...what do you think?

Well, is your name meant to be about literally being stepped on? Because it, at least to me, could be taken more than one way -- literally stepping on, or figuratively stepping on, as in dominating in any way. Many may think you wish to be submissive as a doormat, by saying "steponme" -- but I don't see that as a specific fetish thing. This coming from another sub though...

However, you do say that you are "no longer available" -- if you're just looking for friends, does the name matter as much? Personally, I can't stand the username that Master had on here (well still does but I refuse to advertise it/link etc). However... we clicked in so many ways so quickly that I didn't stay with the username thing for long. I knew his real name and began to think of him by it after only a couple days, as opposed to if I meet someone with a username and know them by it long enough I will never get around to changing them in my head to the real name.

So I guess... if I had not actually had the courage to meet Master face to face so soon, I might have had more issues with respecting him given the name... (still have no respect for it though. He needs to get a better name on here...maybe once we have good photos together).

Screen names bear weight with me. Usually chances are someone with a name like straponluver84 is going to send a BS message, where as TexanSub09 might be a bit more productive.

Pretty much any screen name that is a blatant outcry that they have some fetish points to they just want that fetish taken care of and the person doing it doesn't matter. Then of course certain screen names just make me roll my eyes, like any woman calling herself "goddess" or the rude/bitchy/nasty screen names like IRuleUBitch. And anything over sexual makes me roll mye yes too, lickurass247...yeah, sounds like fun but not 24/7.

Of course you can't judge someone JUST by thier name, but the screen name is the title to their book and sets you up for what to expect. If you pick up a book in the library entitled "The Story of Australian Butterflies" you know it's probably going to be about butterflies in Australia. If you pick up a book entitled "Piles of Shit in Cuba" what do you think the book is going to be about?

I don't judge solely by a screen name, but I most certainly expect certain things from people with certain names. "do u like strapons" is more likely to come from straponluver84 than TexanSub09.

I certainly chose my name to attract like minded individuals, but not to limit myself.

I think we call all appreciate that except that it, in reality it will.  If a name refects a major fetish, than it is more than appropriate but, yes, they can be a major 'coloring' factor when I go to open an email, esp. if it something listed under acts I am less than interested in (or even hard limts) and combined with "I read your profile and I am perfect for you...."

For me, screennames are the first impression. You chose it for a reason, after all, and so it says something about you. Whether or not it is what you want it to say after the fact is another story. I have gotten messages from people with all sorts of mild to wild names, and almost without fail the wild names are the type trying to get themselves noticed for their interest an not their personality.

It doesn’t work for me, but maybe it works for you.  Maybe your profile should relate exactly how it does so such as:   How you view slavery?  Maybe you want to me made to feel emasculated (but not necessarily through crossdressing.    How do you wish to serve? Perhaps you feel you have so little to offer that the Mistress would have a clean slate to ‘mold’ you   How do you view yourself?  Maybe you are nothing, no man, etc without service to a woman.   Etc….

If anyone else thinks at all like me (you have my condolences if you do), we gather our very first impressions of a person's overall personality and perhaps even their overall demeanor from the screen name when we happen upon it. My favorites here are ones that are generally positive in tone, are clever on some level, or just have a good ring to them when you say them.

Using your screen name to reference a hot-button fetish is fine and all, but it'd be counter-productive if it was one that the user found his- or herself drifting away from over time. I hate to say it, but to me, the fetish-y names often gives the impression of an HNG user, or sometimes even suggests low self-esteem, which I'm sure does not accurately describe many who go with those types of screen names. Sometimes the fetish-y ones are really funny though!

Edited for a horrendous spelling snafu...

Personally, the negative connotation behind the word wimp would turn me ff immediately. I have said to many subs, if you do not consider yourself worth my time... I am probably going to agree. You have to remember not everyone wants someone who comes off even in their screenname as worthless. I do not want to be associated with a wimp, and I expect better from my boys.

Usako,
I agree, a screen name like TexanSub09 or variations of it just screams "intelligent non-wanker".

Although back in my chat days I did have a couple of people tell me I wasn't spelling subtext right.  One guy even told me the way I spelled it made it look like I was from Texas.

Just for fun I looked through the nicks of Dominant women.  I only saw one out of about one hundred that was questionable.  Lot's of clever ones like Beelzebabe, that's a good one.

I've had many conversations about this exact subject.  One of my biggest pet peeves, long before I ever entered a dating/bdsm site. was people who chose screen names that resembled nothing more than personal ads.

I chose my s/n because I want it to be catchy. I figured it was clever, but not too obvious and it might make people curious. I tried to make my profile as interesting as my s/n. So far I've gotten a few intelligent replies or contacts complimenting everything. Exactly what I was aiming for.

I agree with the others who said that a screen name is your first impression. When I saw "elderrook" on my admirers list my first thought was "hmmm, clever nick" and it prompted me to read his profile (a well written piece about himself ). It was the nick and his profile that made ME want to reach out to him (I think I wrote something along the lines of "Are you just going to admire me from afar or actually write to me? hahaha").

So yes, something clever vs vulgar tends to catch my eye. Best foot foward :-)

All of my Favorites have had 'pleasant', nonsexual, non fetish screen names.  Most included something about themselves that I found interesting... WestPet, WayofftheWall, BlueEyedBoy, BlackPearl, FunTies, 4urLuv, even BoyToyJustin... they just caught my eye.  The ones that make me go 'Hmmmm' are the ones like SeeksBBW (I don't think I'm THAT fat! *pout*) who show up on my admierer list but never write to me, even when I write to them.  The ones that make me nuts are the ones that all sound alike and I can't keep them straight.  When talking to two men named Subm4youruse and Subm4strapon... a girl can get confused!
