wimpslave2, since you ask:
yes your name is really that bad, in my humble opinion. I'd love it if you'd come back in another incarnation here, with a name like strongslave, nobleslave, worthyslave, or something like that, that would make a better first impression. I'll bet you'd have much better luck on CM with a better screenname. Something that shows that you have a sense of self-worth. Self- confidence is a very attractive trait.

Or perhaps just kill the "slave" part and think of something unique, witty or charming. We'll know you're a slave through your profile, no need to plaster it in your screen name. But that's just my personal opinion.

Trying to find a screen name to fit can be frustrating. Try opening a new account anywhere and it will drive you crazy trying to pick a name that someone esle is not useing. What I did with mine confuses some people. To some it sounds sinister. Thats ok. Once you figure it out it makes sense.

I go by HotMistress.  Would you be more apt to click on Me or FlatAssDomme?  And no, My ass is NOT flat.  Just an example.  We tend to paint a picture in our minds when we read, so yes, profile names are important.  As for you, I assume you enjoy trampling?  I do as well, so I might investigate further, depending on what your email said.

I agree that screen names do give a first impression.  It's kind of a dating site, and so much is dependent on how you present yourself.

And I think it is important to distinguish the search function from the forum.

I think that a poorly chosen screen name can well hurt you if someone is searching through CM lists and "bleeps" over all the dumb or clearly fetish names.

But in the forum, you have the opportunity to reveal yourself as a person, not just a dumb or poorly chosen name.  Granted, you may start from a negative with some folk, but how you present yourself here is huge too.

All of my Favorites have had 'pleasant', nonsexual, non fetish screen names.  Most included something about themselves that I found interesting... WestPet, WayofftheWall, BlueEyedBoy, BlackPearl, FunTies, 4urLuv, even BoyToyJustin... they just caught my eye...

Oh those are among my favorites too!  I cannot recall a single bad experience with a boy who has taken the time to create a unique, personal, and interesting username.  Of your examples, four of them would motivate me to initiate communication.

If I don't like a username that arrives in my mailbox, I usually delete without opening it.

I'll admit to being something of a crumudgeon about screen-names, and not just here but all across my digital dealings. I find that I'm a little quicker to take somebody seriously if they have a handle that actually resembles a name and not just a group of words and/or numbers.

My litmus test has always been "can I use this handle in a conversation and not feel awkward or silly?" For instance:
"Pass the salt, Fatal1ty?"
vs.
"Pass the salt, IAmTheNight1978?"

Mind you I don't let it get in the way of my interactions for long, but it can be a stumbling block at first.

I just read AAkasha response to a the thread entitled "Should I Give Up".  The op is a DJ and was asking if that was the problem.
AAkasha said that his screen name was a turn off, which is perfectly fine.
My Question is, do you really pay that much attention to screen names?  Does a screen name make you look or make you shy away?
I guess I never looked at it that way, but I guess it could have a tremendous influence on the reader....am I right or wrong?

Ok, I read the profile and the list of likes and dislikes but that rarely changes my point of view. The way I see it is this... when you create a profile here you are asked to put in a screen name... and I can't help but think that the ones with nics like "buttfckroncrack" had one thing on their mind when they were creating that profile. I'm sorry, but if you were asked tomorrow what you nic means, how would you explain it? Is it purely kink related? Is it all about sex or getting laid? Or is it about you as a person? I'm just more interested in getting to know people first, couldn't care less about their kink if there isn't a person in there someplace too. So yeah, the nic has a LOT to do with who I contact or take seriously.

Every now and then someone asks me to explain my screen name, and I simply tell them that it has no fetish connection whatsoever. I've been using the name for a long time, and it comes from one of the characters in one of the novels I wrote.

Yes. Screen names really will affect my  initial reaction to them, or interest in them or not.

I don't believe so. If that's your interest and your nick name represents that and that's what you're advertising for, well then don't change what you're  representing with your name. just cause someone else thinks your name isn't appealing.

Now, I would say that's more than a bit hasty and unnessisary since some people will cm mail you privatly about something you said or for some reason utterly unrelated to a come on , and pleasant friendly conversation or dialog can happen with those scenarios even if their name was dog shit for you or something else you find distasteful, and I feel all emails regardless of screen name should get read, and then if it is really a come on or a gross email you can delete it.

Short answer:  yes, I pay attention to screen names.  Second short answer:  yes, certain screen names are automatically and completely repellent.

1) Like Akaska, I dislike names that contain self-humilation.  People who log on with words like "sissy", "wimp", etc. in their names are often signalling a bad attitude toward their submission and my dominance, and I want nothing to do with them until they work out their issues.  As a domme I do not need to be dealing with that kind of baggage.  It is the yuck.

2) Names that state the person's desires in the imperative--as a command for others to obey--are incredibly repulsive in a dominant OR a submissive.  I am not impressed by a submissive named "RamMyAss" or a dominant called "Crawl4Me".  Here's a thought--how about you people grow a personality before you start barking orders about how others should fulfill your sexual needs?  Thankseversomuch.

3)  A lot of names that people choose are impersonal and unimaginative, or express nothing but a fetish.  "ILikeFeet" is less offensive than "SitOnMyFace" as a screen name, but it still tells me very little about you as a person, and it tends to indicate that you're going to be very focused on your own fetishes and probably a crashing bore unless I am specifically want to exploit your fetish.

the only time I honestly gave someone shit about there user name was when their name was something along the lines of  Mr Big... until later I found out he really had the equipment to back it up...

as far as random people's names screen names. i love hearing a good story about how they came up with it... while its still "only" a screen name... at least it shows they put some pride and effort into their name and as such their reputation.

Cheers

I place little value upon most 'screen names' unless yes...a fetish is included. Otherwise...what's in a name. I have actually had one tell me my handle is not a name you know.

Frankly, if someone with a nickname like that said that it was indeed about them as a person, I'd be even more put off by it, than if they did say that it was an attempt to get laid.  Not the kind of person I think I would really like to spend my time around.

I've had a couple people, over time, ask about my nick, which I use in numerous places.  Simple.  When I played rugby, I had gorgeous, long, red hair... It darkened over the years unfortunately.  Anyway, I kept it back in a tidy pony tail, that I kept immaculate.  The team started to refer to me as "Big Cat", over time it got modified to "BigKat", and then "BiggKatt", sometimes just B.K. for short.

The burger king joke, yeah, that's original, I don't hear that often enough.  The first 5000 times is just never enough.

But anyway, yeah.  Some names have a purpose behind them, some have a long history even... god, this name has been with me now for about 16 years.

Normally I do give benefit of the doubt on a nickname, and see what they have to say anyway, but, 'buttfckroncrack'... yeah, that one would probably just drop right to the 'deleted' bin.  If for the lack of common decency and taste, then for the crack part at least.

Yes, I pay a great deal of attention to the screen name.

If it seems focused on a fetish or activity, if it talks down about a person or frankly talks them up too highly (which mine might too) that makes a negative impression on me.

I connect with people, not fetishes, not ideals of inferiority or superiority, so I do have an immediate reaction to screen names.

That doesn't mean I won't talk to a person but the negative reaction to their name will need to be countered by an interesting person.

My screen-name (sadomasokisti or sadomasochist) dates back to before BDSM/fetish channels or forums here in Iceland and I was looking for BDSM related communications on vanilla sites.  It just didn't feel right for me to change name which I had used for many years when I joined the sites like collarme.
