i happen to be a person that LOVES to cook.. and while i also do not enjoy the harder work of "prep" peeling, chopping, ect, those jobs can be done with more ease, simply by using quality tools for the job. I'd much rather spend the money, on a an occassional purchase of good cooking impliments that can be used over and over, then spend my money on something pre~prepped"

So, while i don't enjoy prep.. its not so bad.

What i love instead, and what makes it all WORTH those efforts.. is the creativity, of spices, flavors, seasoning to taste, all in part of creating a delicious meal.

And what i also love, is seeing and hearing others appreciate my skills.

An "mmm mommy.. that was good!"
or an " thanks sherry, you cook so much better then my mom ever could" reallly makes me feel great! i of course, also love to enjoy my end results as well.

Might be a bit strange for some, but i have a bit of a fetish also, in how i feel, while watching a Man sit down and fully enjoy a plateful of whatever i cooked for him. Who knew food could be so sexual?

And thats just it.. a meal doesn't and shouldn't always be seen as the simpliest way of getting a bunch of calories down our throat.

a meal should be enjoyed.. savored.. shared with the company of those closest.. where compliments are given to the chef!.. you just cant get that, by throwing down a tv dinner in front of your man.
"wow..baby..! you sure outdid yourself on microwaving my fried chicken tv dinner! ? What DID you do? Time it the extra 3 seconds that i told you makes it taste sooo much better?" lol

Now, all that aside, i also am one that doesnt enjoy cleaning up afterwords, but again those chores can be made so much easier.

in crockpots, they sell plastic liners, so just a matter of pulling it out and tossing.
For oven cooking, they sell foil liners, packet cooking.
Foil pans to just toss out after food is gone.

The only real mess that has to be still delt with would be anything cooked on top of the stove. And even there they are working on ways to make cleanup as easy as possible, boiling bags, ect.

and yet another thing.. Microwave ovens are..honestly.. really NOT expensive popcorn poppers, and tv dinner heaters. REAL food..real meals CAN and are cooked in those things EVERYDAY. They sell microwave cookbooks for a reason. Stuffed peppers are a great meal cooked in a microwave. i use my microwave..OFTEN.. while i cook meals..that are Homemade and done by scratch, and illicite those well loved compliments.. to the chef!.

not really on topic...but i am a pain in the ass about family meals. I insist on at least one meal per day as a family (or..in the op's case...as a couple) and the efforts in the kitchen are worth it to make this happen...

i won't tease like everyone else seems to be doing, on your cooking skills.

but yes, i do agree, it is important to sit together for meals. at least once a day. To make that meal a delicious one.. worthy of praise and thanks.. is always worth the efforts. i am sure your husband and family all really do enjoy your cooking.

My parents and I, a lot of times eat together, and if they were going to watch a movie, my dad will wait the 25 mins it takes to eat toput the movie on if I suggest we all sit at the table.. He enjoys the companionship just as much as I do, on meals that are eaten just the three of us cause my honey's not home.

I took Home-Ec in Jr High (7th grade) - and already knew how to cook at that point. 1 semester was spent in the kitchen, the other semester was spent in the sewing room. I nearly Failed the semester spent in the sewing room, but was constantly bored and "experimenting" with significantly more complex recipes of my own design (which were almost always good, much to the instructor's chagrin) during the kitchen semester. Since mom and granny had me in the kitchen helping with prep work - and actively cooking - from the time I could see over the stove, it was nearly a wasted semester of school.

What day was that? I took home ec in junior high. They taught us to make hard boiled eggs. Toast and hot chocolate.
Then in high school when I just needed to take fluff classes I took it again.
They taught us to make hot chocolate and tuna casserole.

Seems they always hired the teachers who couldn't do anything else to teach home ec.

This was in the 70's. And it was fun, we cooked full meals and made desserts. We also spent 1 semester in the kitchen and 1 semester in the sewing room. I did poorly in sewing because nothing was ever perfect enough to suit me. I once ripped the sleeves out of a dress so many times that my teacher finally sewed them in exasperation and took my seam ripper away!

Damn I got a lot better places to spend my money than overpriced food lol .... I put in 40 hours a week at a job where I am on my feet all day doing factory work ... I have a ruptured bursa in one hip from a fall a few years ago .... I have bursitis in both knees, I have poor circulation which results in swollen ankles from standing all day ..ontop of I have back problems and fibromyalgia so have learned to live with chronic pain and I still prepare and cook my own meals .. and I don't really enjoy cooking after a long day but I do it anyway .. ...as I like to have something to show for the money I earn rather than watch it go down the toilet.

Ok we tried it out, and I personally found the food to be lacking, and I wasn't impressed. i had an apple spiced roast, and james thought the apple to much of an influence, and I personally thought it was bland.

James loved the angel hair pasta chilly orange shrimp, and said he'd eat it again, but I can't comment since I didn't eat it, it being spicy and all.

I did however like how willing they were to fix an order screw up 5 days later, when I finally remembered to call and tell them their creamy cheese corn and chives had no cheese in it.

Even so it was still worthwhile to me to have tried it out.

i'm not much of a cook. i can make a few things pretty well, but the family doesn't care for the ethnic stuff i learned to cook as a kid, so i make do with what they'll eat. it's amazing how much crap they put in processed foods. you have to be very picky these days and read alot of labels, but i think it's worth it to put in the effort and have people tell you they want you to make that again soon. with my picky eaters i've found the crock pot does wonders, toss a cut of fresh meat and some seasonings in, add the veggies and walk away. you can use almost anything in a crock pot so the meals can fit your tastes. not sure how to blend spices? mrs dash makes a variety of salt free spice blends that work well, just add a little or a lot depending on what you like. the crock pot cooks by itself and i'm free to do whatever. especially now that i'm unable to stand and cook at the stove, using the crock pot is alot easier. my mother in law gave me a crock pot with a timer built in so i can set it for a certain amount of time and when the food is done it just keeps it warm for me until we're all home and ready to eat. even if your recipe calls for pasta, that only takes a few minutes to cook fresh and add to whatever you made in the crock pot. nice, simple and alot healthier. and leftovers can be frozen in microwave safe containers for quick meals when you don't have the time or forgot to start a crock pot prep the night before. most places also have microwaves in the lunch room so you can take them with you to school or work and heat them up there, saves money on lunches and you still get the benefits of eating healthy. don't be afraid to experiment a little, we've all learn to cook that way, since the first caveman dropped his food in the fire and liked the way it smelled.

i love Mrs Dash! (that reminds me - i need to get some soon). i use it in my burgers to chicken fajitas ...it's wonderful on roasting a turkey too with some garlic salt (oops, gave away my secret roasting recipe).

i also have a picky eaters - one who doesn't eat much red meat (my oldest) and another who's not much of an eater unless it's pizza or pasta (my youngest) however that's changing since she wants to try new things. i've found a way of cooking meals tailored to their particular tastes without having to cook two separate dinners - it's a mix or match dinner. i have one starch (rice or pasta), meat (mostly chicken) and veggies (salads ...we're such rabbits over here) ...and dinner is done. there's no more complaining at the table.

It's comments about picky eaters that remind me of one of the reasons I like living alone. I don't Have to suit anyone else's tastes unless I specifically Want to invite someone over!

Hell, I cook from the south beach cookbooks, the meals sound expensive, but they usually are not. Plus I love to cook, and the recipes are super varied, and I am eating awesome food everyday.

No full meals for us. No sewing either. It was just cooking class. I can't sew either. I can look at something and make something similar..that's how I do all of the halloween costumes. Though if I need a pattern it isn't going to happen.
