And no, it isn't legal in Thailand, but law enforcement looks the other way. These girls are forced into prostitution as teenagers because of the poor economy there.

If you don't realize that young girls being SOLD to pimps is a big problem in Asia, then you need to continue "educating yourself."

Actually I have been to Thailand several times and I have been into Thai brothels and spoken to sex workers (all over 18 btw)

Child prostitution and sex slavery is a scourge all over the planet.  Of course these are very much illegal in Thailand.

But Thailand completely ignores the anti-prostitution laws forced on them by "moral" westerners (the UN) in 1960.  Instead it has implemented a system to protect its adult sex workers from mistreatment and disease. 

Sex workers treated as criminals cannot expect protection by the law.  How is that a better outcome for women who choose sex work to support themselves?

Of course, I feel very sorry for anyone forced by economic circumstances to perform sex work.  But why make their lives more miserable by treating them like criminals instead of victims?

I wasn't talking about women who choose sex work. It's not really a choice if you're forced into it.

When did I ever say they are criminals? I must have missed that part.

I'm sorry you and jen got so uppity because you felt like I was threatening your rights or whatever (I'm not really sure what jen's problem was)... Unfortunately there is a lot of underage girls in Thailand being taken advantage of, whether you noticed it or not. I did. *shrugs*

Remember John Mark Karr? It should be widely known that Thailand (as well as other asian countries) are hotbeds for underage prostitution (ie raping children) and I chose not to ignore it. Hmm, ignore... ignorance. Makes sense to Me.

MsC and I were not referencing chold prostitution. We were referencing grown adult women who choose to be sex workers. And you decided to take it out of context of the conversation.

Now, is child prostitution wrong? Yes. Does anyone here disagree with that? No. So I don't know why your panties are in a twist here. No one is advocating child prostitution at all in anyway no matter where it may or may not be occuring.

Let's look at something else.

The vast majority of those involved in prostitution anywhere in the world are adult women. Not children. Does that mean that it doesn't happen or that it's not a problem? No...we all acknowledge that it does happen and it is wrong.

I would go on about some other things shown here but they're strictly my personal opinion and all I'm stating right now is that it seems that someone has taken this way out of the ballpark from where it started.

Yes I know I've "spoken" for someone else here...it's a liberty I've taken however, I don't think I've misrepresented anyone. So...with that I have a job I need to get back to.

I'll admit I should have been more specfiic, but I honestly didn't have the energy. Nor did I predict you guys would flip out about "prostitute's rights" when that wasn't even what I was talking about.

I'll ignore the sex workers in Thailand who are (1) male and (2) under the age of 18, and just deal with women who are of the age of majority.  They are not "unionized," as one poster put it.  There are, however, several support groups for female prostitutes.  A quote from the Wikipedia article on Thai prostitution: "Several support organizations for sex workers exist in Thailand. Most of them attempt to discourage women from taking up or continuing the trade."

Like other places in the world, the legal prostitutes in Thailand have higher rates of drug use, venereal disease, and suicide than the general population.  One source is here:

It is also worth noting that many foreign men who marry or cohabit with prostitutes end up being killed by them?  Why?  Foreigners cannot own property in Thailand.  The same Wikipedia article says that more Britons are killed in Thailand each year than perhaps any other country in the world.

MsCFromMelbourne, while I completely agree with you that United States laws regarding sex workers totally suck, Australia ain't so hot either.  The laws vary from state to state, and sexworkers in Queensland for example are very restricted by the STATE laws there.  Federal law is essentially silent on sex workers except within the territories, sex workers also have to run the gauntlet of planning permission from local government.

I don't see any reason to play holier-than-thou here.  The reality is that prostitutes get a raw deal pretty much anywhere in the world.  An offhand remark to a non-responding OP about moving to Thailand has gotten blown all out of proportion.
