John McCain has temporarily suspended his campaign today, and asked Obama to do the same.  He suggests that they both need to head back to work and help get some sort of deal worked out to get a rescue package through congress.  This just happened so there is no link as of yet.

More to follow.

Edited to add:

Preliminary report from Fox...

John McCain asked the Presidential Debate Commission on Wednesday to postpone Friday’s scheduled debate with Barack Obama so that he can work on the financial crisis bailout plan now on Capitol Hill.

The Arizona Republican senator said he will suspend his presidential campaign on Thursday to return to Washington to help with bailout negotiations. He urged Obama to do the same.

What do you think? Is it a wise altruistic move, or does cynicism play even a teeny weeny little part in this?

Well whatever the motivation, the American public deserves no less....both of these candidates need to go on record concerning whatever final form this bailout takes...They both need to cast a vote here and let the voters know where they stand on this!!!!!

This is something both sides have been claiming needs to be bipartisan.  It is not the first time that McCain has put aside his party or campaign to do something like this.  So I take it at face value.  If these men are to be the next leader of the country, perhaps putting that country before their own personal aspirations is a good thing, no?

He also asked that the foreign policy debate scheduled for this Friday be postponed to a later date, to allow both to focus on the #1 issue facing Americans.

This can be a good thing for both campaigns in my eyes.

Postponing the foreign policy debate will be especially good for his campaign. And yes, call me a cynic.

I wonder what the "base" will think of McCain if he votes for the bail out package?
'Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) warned his former colleagues that they would pay a price in November for backing the bailout now — and that John McCain could ride to victory over Barack Obama by persuading voters that the bailout is really the “Obama-Bush plan.” While McCain seemed to move in the other direction Tuesday, Gingrich called the Paulson plan “stupid,” “a really bad idea” and “the kind of corrupt scheme that could have been designed by [Russian Prime Minister] Vladimir Putin.”... '
Pretty damning assesment from Newt....not that I believe is that relavent anymore.

Postponing that particular debate would benefit Obama far more than McCain.  Obama has been in cram mode and was planning on being in that mode for three days.

I just saw the briefing.  He is suggesting that the current proposal is not acceptable, and that it needs to be reworked to make sure the best interest of the taxpayers is primary.

McCain and Obama are negotiating details of some sort of agreement on this one.

Well, I guess this will get him out of having to talk about his part in the fiasco during the debates.... does it mean that Sarah can remain in "blackout mode" for another week or two? And does this get her from having to face off against Biden?

Very convienient.

McCain gets to look like he's doing something, undercutting his "fundamentals are strong" fuckup, gets himself out of having to cop to his responsibility for the crisis in the debates, keeps the Hockey Mom from having to expose herself as the fraud she is,  and if Obama doesn't play along, then Obama looks crass and uncaring about the economy. Once again, a masterstroke by Rove! (More manipulative than a "Ringworld" puppeteer!)

Any plan that allows the Secretary unfettered and unreviewable discretion with taxpayers money needs to be deep-sixed pronto. There should also be executive compensation regulation tied to this bailout...these people can not profit at the public teat...

If McCain was doing this because he thought it was tehright thing to do he could have contacted Obama privately and negotiated a mutual suspension. What he instead did smacks of trying to appear to be leading the way while he is clearly seekingteh advantage by pretending to act presidential on this matter.

An utterly transparent tactic. I'm guessing his internal polling is bad enough for him to try something this desperate.

Lucy,

True, the closer we get to election day, the more the office of POTUS seems to be taking on a "zonk" quality. (As in the old, "Let's Make a Deal" TV game show.) Whoever wins, they will have the interesting position of being the most powerful President in history... over a bankrupt country that has shit on every principle it started out with.

Thanks, Bush!

I agree all other political anythings should stop until this is resolved. Personally, it doesn't matter if it's a "calculated" move or not, it is the right one, and if one side refuses I will vote for the other. So, Obama better get his ass to washington.

I wrote for the first time this year, all my elected federal politicians, about my views on this crap as well. I don't write often, but it is about 2 pages long, and clearly spelled out. I'm going to get the vote tally, and thoroughly do my best to remove any of them that voted poorly, which means unless this POS offered up thus far is highly modified, and no fucking non-related add-ons. Politicians and people need to seriously get it in there head, that this is the one time for sure that it gets done right, and fairly, or all hell is going to break lose.

The two potential candidates really need to think about there positions here as well. As this decision could cost them millions of votes, and or haunt them for the rest of there. careers. It's Adult Time, put the political books down. People are judging by how unpolitical they can be now.

Could this be it?

We've often speculated that Bush would pull some kind of shit at the last minute, in order to step in, stop the election, and place himself in power for an unelected third term...

The whole financial crisis seems to be something that was set in motion....

Could this finally be "Bad King George's" attempt at taking over the US via coup?

As Obama says, a president needs to be able to deal with more than one problem at a time. I'm sure McCain can make some time in between his photo ops on Capitol Hill on Friday to get on his private plane and fly to Miss.

It amazes me that both these guys are suddenly realizing the economy is the most important issue Americans are facing right now.  i'd be firing "advisors" left and right....

Though i do think it's a bad idea to cancel the debate.  Foregn policy not only affects the economy, but for most, (those who don't think gay marriage and abortion are the pivotal issues in this country) foreign policy (including war) is the second most important issue we face today.

On one hand you say you don't care if it is a calculated move and on the other you say it is time to judge how unpolitical they can be.

If it's a calculated move then it is nothing but political.
