Look here and balloon up the cartoon so you can follow along.

kittinSol -> RE: A Concise View of US Immigration Policy (9/26/2008 5:44:36 AM)

It's even more complicated than that [:(] .

slaveboyforyou -> RE: A Concise View of US Immigration Policy (9/26/2008 5:55:04 AM)

We aren't the only ones with a complicated immigration system.  Almost all western countries have difficult systems, and it's because A LOT of people want to come there.  I see that you live in Canada, cloudboy.  I'm not an expert on Canada's immigration policies, but I seem to recall from others that it's not exactly easy to move there.  But, nice attempt to create another thread about why America is just a big, unfair meanie towards all the impoverished souls in the world.  I guess we shouldn't have any immigration laws and just let anyone with a pulse come right on in.

kittinSol -> RE: A Concise View of US Immigration Policy (9/26/2008 6:06:31 AM)

There's no denying that the system is covered in red tape, probably hugely expensive to run, and very inefficient - but I suspect the inefficiency is purposeful. The paperwork is unbelievable.

And yet people put themselves through this mess, and leap through the flaming hoops of it every day.  Almost as if the USA was a land of freedom and opportunity, and the greatest hope of mankind or something...

DMFParadox -> RE: A Concise View of US Immigration Policy (9/26/2008 6:14:17 AM)

We should have slightly less restrictive laws, slaveboy.

Slightly.  Not dramatically. But our immigrants are a strength, and we treat them like lepers. We really ought to lighten up a bit.

You obviously don't have a clue what you're talking about.

You're so cute when you're in denial, Kitten.

Project much [:D] ?

rexrgisformidoni -> RE: A Concise View of US Immigration Policy (9/26/2008 7:17:55 AM)

I think we need stricter immigration laws. But that's just me.

Figure out what you think the laws should be then verify that all your immigrant ancestors qualify under your rules then get back to me. I promise not to laugh too hard when you claim that they were all highly skilled college educated western europeans without criminal records or any sort of black mark against them in their home country.

I however will remain proud of my ancestor who was transported after fighting at Culloden, the one who fled Ireland after his British landlord died suddenly and all the others who would no longer be welcome in the country they helped build.

You're right of course, they wouldn't make it. But that was also a hundred years ago. Different world. I am just sick of border jumpers taking advantage of our social services and all sort of compromise solutions made.

kittinSol -> RE: A Concise View of US Immigration Policy (9/26/2008 12:21:30 PM)

Unless there's a wish to stop immigration altogether (which would be catastrophic for the country, as well all know, demagogy aside), I don't quite see how the rules can be any stricter. They're as stringent (and labyrinthine) as possible already.

Immigration..one of the Republicans favorite talkin points designed to keep the base scared and in line...

slaveboyforyou -> RE: A Concise View of US Immigration Policy (9/26/2008 12:39:20 PM)

Yeah Mike, immigration isn't an important issue at all.  [8|]

Not quite sure if this is directed towards me, but I don't care for how the people who jump the fence are here ILLEGALLY! There are things called laws. And some of  ours deal with who can and can't come in. I'm sorry if that offends your sensibilities, but that's a fact. Also a well known fact that a significant portion of those who jump the border are hardened criminals and drug runners.

If you look into the numbers I doubt you'll find that illegal immigrants cause you much of a tax burden. The fact is that illegal immigrants do some of the hardest lowest paid work in the nation and by and large can't file tax returns or the like and have to pay sales and property taxes, indirectly in the case of renters, just like everybody else.

A legitimate beef with illegal immigration is that it drives down wages for low and unskilled labor. Solving that problem is a concern but it starts not with the immigrants but with the employers willing to break the law to pay less wages.

I suggest looking at the tax burden in your state. Here they place a decent sized burden. Look at California as well and tell me they are not a drain there.

Yeah and they drive wages down as a result.  Let's not forget that we don't know who any of these people are.  Violent criminals do come into the country.  If you don't believe that, take a good look at El Salvador.  The country has had to deal with all the MS-13 gangsters we've deported.  I am all for allowing people to come here for better opportunity, but they have to obey the law.  Our system is no more complicated or bureaucratic than any other western country.

My sensibilities are intact, please don't lose any sleep on that account. When we discuss the illegalities of their presence why don't we start with the illegal hiring and exploitation of illegal workers, that too would be an important issue ,would it not slaveboy. To constantly harp on the presence of illegal alliens, while simultaneously ignoring that which draws them and allows them to stay would seem to be pointless
And yes this is a Republican bogie man to excite their xenophobic voting base and divert attention from more serious issues that plague Amrican society...if you don't see that chances are you are their target audience...and you have my sympathies.
