Not true at all Merc.what offended me was the heavy handed use of this young mans sacrifice for the political ambition of another.Hell McCain has his own sacrifice to exploit,no need to use this mans loss.

What's heavy handed about one man stating his opinion?  The video being "heavy handed" is your interpetation.  Created by your mental filter of the world.  I rest my case.

So you think the impact of the video was affected in no part by the purposful use of the set-up and timely walk away from the camera to the obvious vision of his personal loss...I rest my case.

like i said, i posted this because of my dear friend that is going back to iraq this year.  i had him in my mind & heart.

Really? So why did you feel the need to bring in partisan politics to your opening post?

i am not voting rep or dem, but i respect this young man!

You are using this soldier's history for political reasons. It is your responsibility. Don't turn around and whine when you get called up on it - unless you enjoy this sort of attention, of course.

kitt,
no matter what i put in my OP, you would have read politics into it.  i stated i was not planning to vote for either of the candidates so to take politics out of it.  i posted the vid because the soldier touched my heart.  he served his country.  he has earned his right to speak, no matter that you or i agree or disagree.  it is his right and i found him brave because he made it public.

LadyLupineNYC -> RE: Very powerful video....a must see! (9/29/2008 8:32:49 PM)

Why is he brave? If, he was 'doing his duty', if, as we have already established, no one has an issue with the soldiers themselves, how was this a ‘brave’ act?  We can, maybe, imply the he received his disability in an honorable manner, but I don’t see how his views are being persecuted (the perceived politic of the video aside).

slvemike4u -> RE: Very powerful video....a must see! (9/29/2008 8:34:05 PM)

The video is a political statement by a soldier who has obviously sacrificed for his country....politics can not be removed from the conversation. The conversation is politics...and you knew that when you posted, despite your denials...

bestbabync -> RE: Very powerful video....a must see! (9/29/2008 8:36:48 PM)

as this thread has proved.  his opinion and statements are very unpopular but he recorded and posted it anyway.  in his eyes i see what i saw in my friends eyes, when he told me he is returning to iraq.

NormalOutside -> RE: Very powerful video....a must see! (9/29/2008 8:37:12 PM)

LOL!  "If we stop fighting, we lose our freedom."  WHAT?!?!  Does anyone even bother to think slogans through anymore?  The day the US stops killing innocent people overseas isn't the day they lose their freedom, it's the day the world rejoices that a tyranical superpower has finally been taught a lesson.

For crying out loud, some actor reads from a script and says the war is awesome, and people actually like it?!?

bestbabync -> RE: Very powerful video....a must see! (9/29/2008 8:39:10 PM)

i do not support either, Nobama nor McSame....sorry

Not as I see it.  If you choose to have a simplistic, child-like wonder about what is going on, that is up to you but your classy cursing at those who found the video distasteful belies your babe-in-the woods act you have since been trying to portray.  You can look into the eyes of your Marine and I can tell you when my boy was walking by and herd the video his gut reaction, knowing nothing about it was “what the hell is this crap?” I can tell you of all the time I sat next to another solider lying to protect his friends and family’s feelings about why he was trying going back (his reason to them: ‘honor’, the real reason: unresolved PTSD, the therapy wasn’t working).  How I have sat there listening to the list of ‘how I gut f*** by the Army, Marines, National Guard, etc’ stories.  As I have said time and time again, as many have gone over, that is as many options as there are. So take the sentimentalist guilt tripping and see it for what it is.

Of course not. I am pointing out that your interpretation of it as heavy handed is just that... your interpretation. Others will interpreted differently, depending upon their own mental filter of the world.

DomKen -> RE: Very powerful video....a must see! (9/29/2008 8:53:58 PM)

I've told this story before but i guess it is time to repeat it. My nephew signed up for the NG in 2004. His father and I, both veterans, talked to him to try and dissuade him but his mind was made up. He went to basic and before he ever reached his unit was transfered to a transpo company heading to Iraq. He went and spent 18 months in a dump called Camp Annocanda. The families and friends of the men in that company had to buy bullet proof vests, two way radios and an assortment of other vital material for the men in that company because they were not provided to them. My brother and I found ourselves going to machine shops all over the area looking for someone who could write down how to weld steel plate onto trucks because the vehicles they had were entirely unarmored, although some had had metal plates welded on by the previous users.

He came home whole as did most of the men in his unit. his two year enlistment was 5 days from being up when he received a letter informing him that his discharge date would be delayed due to a stop loss order. So off to Iraq he went again despite having served his entire term and having no desire to re-enlist. When he finally returned he was told the stop loss would deny him discharge until 6 months after the end of the deployment. He did finally get out that time although I sat across from my nephew and heard him say if he got another stop loss letter he was going to Canada.

My family has served in this nations armed forces for more than a century. We love this country and were proud of the service we rendered, including my eldest brother's, my nephew's father, service in Vietnam. In 2001 we encouraged my nephew to consider enlisting after 9/11. 2 years later when he graduated highschool we tried to talk him out of it. Watching that proud young man in the video walk away I could not help thinking how I would feel if that or worse had happened to my nephew. Service to this nation with the ever present dangers that entails is a noble undertaking but requires leadership to spend this most precious commodity wisely. The Iraq occupation was never a wise decision.

his opinion and statement is not wrong because ur boy or anyone says it is.  your boy's opinion and statements are not wrong because of what anyone says.  fortunately we all look at life and the world the different, thank goodness.

you have your right to your opinion and i have mine.  believe what you want about my OP.  i became angry because of the words used in the very 1st response to my OP, "whatever rocks your cradle, baby".

i feel that the poster could better have stated her opinion on the vid in the OP rather than my cradle.

if u say so....like i said sorry to offend everyone!

You pretty much have to expect this sort of response, Best.  The idea of sacrifice makes some people extremely uncomfortable.  They lash out viciously to compensate.  Notice that the first reply was from someone who adores a country that won't even defend itself.

I saw this at least a week ago, and sent the link to those who would appreciate it, and those I figured needed to see it.  I haven't read the whole thread.  Was anybody rude enough to suggest he must have brain damage as well?

LadyLupineNYC -> RE: Very powerful video....a must see! (9/29/2008 9:00:49 PM)

"a dump called Camp Annocanda" lol- my boy keeps telling me that was THE place to be...paved roads, Burger King...buses...reliable phone calls...he LOVED having to run a convoy over to there, he would do a bit of ‘shopping’ for his friends…toothpaste…soap…candy bars…mind you, that was later (2006/7), so I am sure it improved with time… he was 1st deployed to a place that was so bad that no contractors would go, they were eating MREs and no laundry service for something like 3 months…plus the added benefit of daily mortar fire being marched in on a ‘base’ approximately the size of 2 foot ball fields…he was also stop lossed during his 2nd deployment...we are counting the months until he is free.

Oddly enough, only you.

DomKen,

i appreciate your nephew's service & sacrafice so much.  i am so glad he is home safe and with your family.  [;)]

bestbabync -> RE: Very powerful video....a must see! (9/29/2008 9:07:57 PM)

TheHeretic,
no one said he had brain damage.  i believe alot posters now think that of me though.

First off, you go by "Best Baby"  I saw that if some one calls me "Lupine".  Second, that negativity was met and massively accelerated by your response.  Instead of acknowledging that, you keep talking about the solider in the video, ‘your Marine’, other people…but not you and your reaction.

It is never a good idea to expect that nastiness will somehow breed politeness and respect.  Nor, I would say to others who have posted, should there be an assumption that someone, such as myself, who might agree on the surface with the first few responders is the same as me having a shallow viewpoint on the topic.  Obviously I think a lot about it, it gets discussed regularly in my household, and I have see the costs up close from many different angles.

But you said it was a 'must see'...which is it? Are we to watch or are we to not click on your posts? [8|]

I think the idea is to see it, and to only comment if you like it. If you don't like it, you're supposed to go away quietly, otherwise: [sm=hissyfit.gif]. And we can't have that.

~FR~
No, the idea is to post if you have something of value to say to the topic (which you rarely do) instead of slamming the OP (which you're very good at). Your sarcasm does not even come close to wit so why not leave it at the door?

bestbabync -> RE: Very powerful video....a must see! (9/29/2008 9:20:43 PM)

obviously, i posted the vid for a reason.  it was not intended to draw a joke made at my expense.  as i stated before, NO MATTER what i post, i am insulted by certain posters.  i should have ignored the insults as i have many times before.  my reaction did take away from the OP.

LadyLupineNYC -> RE: Very powerful video....a must see! (9/29/2008 9:24:55 PM)

I can understand that, we all have our people who act negatively, but I also see you have well over 400 posts, so while you are clearly a person of great feeling, you also know how the boards ‘get’.  I am sure it can hurt, I would be lying if I acted like I never walked away spitting mad, but at the same time, you have no reason to sell yourself short.  Some of us really are will, ready, and able to have a (mostly-no one is perfect) snark free discussion of ideas.
