i surely understand  everyone having their own negative or positive opinions about certain issues.  i have my share, which are not always popular that is for sure.  i truly believe that freedom to post and express ourselves should be respected even here on CM without being insulted because of our unpopular positions.

for instance, some of your views on the iraq war i share!  but still i respect your boy for his service and sacrafice.  he deserves everyones utmost respect.

Oddly enough, only you.

Don't let it go to your head, Lupi.  That was the reply from one of the Democrat friends I sent the link to last week.  Of course, our emails play rougher than this board, and would never get XI's seal of approval.

Thank you, but again, if, as you say everyone has the freedom to post (positive & negative) so to those who posted 'against' you.

I don’t know. It’s election season which happens to correspond with Snark season.

Wouldn’t it be nice if we could grab some shotguns and go Snark hunting?

I think, as it becomes time to warm my self on the prone body of my boy (thankfully in one piece in both body and mind) and drift off to sleep, it bears remembering that good and bad is all a learning experience. I can’t speak for others, I cannot answer for the reactions of others, but I can do my best to represent myself and my impressions as is befiting my own priciples.

"a dump called Camp Annocanda" lol- my boy keeps telling me that was THE place to be...paved roads, Burger King...buses...reliable phone calls...he LOVED having to run a convoy over to there, he would do a bit of ‘shopping’ for his friends…toothpaste…soap…candy bars…mind you, that was later (2006/7), so I am sure it improved with time… he was 1st deployed to a place that was so bad that no contractors would go, they were eating MREs and no laundry service for something like 3 months…plus the added benefit of daily mortar fire being marched in on a ‘base’ approximately the size of 2 foot ball fields…he was also stop lossed during his 2nd deployment...we are counting the months until he is free.

If Camp Annocanda was the good place I really don't want to hear about the bad places. When he was there he reported at least weekly mortar attacks, on of his squad mates lost most of one foot to one.

He reported that the chow hall staffed by bangledeshi contractors hired by KBR was so bad his company commander distributed MRE's for a while as being a medical neccessity for his unit. Apparently the meals that cost $80 a plate were using spoiled meat.

I couldn't believe I was sitting at a kitchen table discussing my nephew deserting and am relieved it didn't come to that.

I hope your boy is and remains safe.

...Y'know...I remember this thing I heard a while back about troops coming home who were going to get called back to Iraq. One guy tied a toolbox to his back and jumped off his roof. Another paid a hitman to shoot him in the leg. I can understand that. I can also understand wanting to believe the propoganda. If it wasn't true, then why the fuck did you risk your life, and you lose limbs, and kill total strangers, and watch your buddies die? You've seen the kinds of things most of us could never imagine, things that will scar you for life. That all had to be for something, right?
So...my two cents? War sorta seems like it sucks.

The short answer to that is when you are that age, the reality is no matter how many 'horror' stories you hear, you never really feel/understand/know what to expect.  No one signs up to "risk your life, and you lose limbs, and kill total strangers, and watch your buddies die".  I too once felt 'well, it's an all volunteer military…' but I see, after discussing it with many people, that that was beyond a simplistic view.  Part of the reason why most vets have a hard time discussing their experiences is just that sort of attitude; after all, how to you start a dialogue with someone one they already think you are an idiot, blood thirsty, or some how a patriotic sucker?  I do I think some who come back have a heavy sense of cognitive dissidence (quick definition- overvaluing something because it has little utility or value to justify the ‘cost’)? Yes, but that is hardly the same thing as thinking that somehow they ‘deserve’ what happened or ‘get what they should be expecting to get’ out of the experience.

You pretty much have to expect this sort of response, Best.  The idea of sacrifice makes some people extremely uncomfortable.  They lash out viciously to compensate.  Notice that the first reply was from someone who adores a country that won't even defend itself.

Since you are referring to me at the third person, again, and without the courage to address me personally, I feel the need to ask which country you are referring to, especially as I have made my views on nationalitic sentiment more than clear to you, and to others. Sacrifice and fighting for a cause has nothing to do with nationalism, and the appropriation of these values by the GOP is distasteful - they do not have the monopoly of sacrifice.

The exaltation of sacrifice for political gain makes it into a farce of astronomical proportions, and I object to this, especially as this OP has a habit of posting blatant political threads under the guise of seeking emotional validation. As I don't brandish your nationality as an insult, I  respectfully ask you that you pay me the same courtesy.

Beg to differ but have you not read the past 4 pages of baby's whining about this? When you post partisan war propoganda ending up as a McCain ad with Lee Greenwood singing in the background please please don't be so naive to expect it not to be seen as such. And to be commented on as such. Wouldn't life be grand if everyone agreed with us all of the time?
Oh, and I find kittin tres witty.

But you said it was a 'must see'...which is it? Are we to watch or are we to not click on your posts?

I think the idea is to see it, and to only comment if you like it. If you don't like it, you're supposed to go away quietly, otherwise: . And we can't have that.

~FR~
No, the idea is to post if you have something of value to say to the topic (which you rarely do) instead of slamming the OP (which you're very good at). Your sarcasm does not even come close to wit so why not leave it at the door?

War is a Racket
by Two-Time Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient Major General Smedley D. Butler - USMC Retired
http://www.lexrex.com/enlightened/articles/warisaracket.htm

-----

I oppose war on foreign soil except under the most exceptional of circumstances - circumstances that have almost never occurred and therefore rarely justified meddling in the affairs of others in foreign lands. The Iraq war has no justification - it was a power grab over oil, pure and simple. Everyone knows this, but it's a quagmire now. Afghanistan was another cold war left-over that should have been avoided.

9-11 was primarily funded and perpetrated by mainly Saudi Arabian folks. The claim is that Osama bin Laden was responsible. If that's true it makes him something like a de facto rogue CIA agent as we supposedly trained him and his mujahideen pals to fight the Soviets in Afghanistan. People like to pat themselves on the backs over that arrangement against the Soviets but I observe that while we know how to fight the war we don't know how to keep the peace. I call it Charlie Wilson's Debacle. Sorry Charlie...

FWIW, I don't believe the organization Al-Qaeda exists. It's a term the west made up to describe a loose collection of radical Islamic enemies so that we could justify engaging them by the use of this one all-purpose bogeyman term: Al-Qaeda. There is no internationally organized group of terrorists operating toward the destruction of the U.S.

Meh...whatever. I could basically give a fuck about Israel. If they want it, they can have it. They already own the oil in the Middle East, so let them have their "Mecca" too. Religious-based claims to land rights over there are idiotic at best. If people identifying themselves ethnically as Jews need somewhere to live - hey, bring 'em over. I love Jews but I am no Zionist. Two things: Jewish chicks are in my experience seriously hot lays (yes, it matters!) and as a whole Israelis are an intelligent, capable folk that would be an asset to the U.S. The more the merrier...

I don't oppose an American military force, but I do oppose standing armies. I think it's smarter by far to fight a good game of diplomacy on the international scene. But if your motive is to fight wars and sell arms to both sides of the war, then by all means war is a great racket.

I don't have anything against veterans. But I don't think of them as heroes or anything like that. I do think we need to do more for them to get them returned to society - it's the least we can do for allowing them to be crucified for capitalism. At minimum we need to give them what they were promised: access to good healthcare (physical and psychological) and some useful educations to get them going again. My problem is when a vet is just some disinformation spouting zombie, but what can you do? That's how we train them to be, the smart ones overcome that programming. Alas, that's not all of them...hence the video linked to by the OP.

All this crap about killing foreigners for the cause of freedom is like being able to recite the contents of a Big Mac - just so much pointless advertising. This detritus of the brain must be scraped off like the plaque from your teeth. It takes time, but most vets come around. And that's when they need the therapy most - when they realize the mental ass-fucking to which they have been victim.

McCains campaign writers did a good job... it alomst sounds like the guy is coming up with it on his own... but then he falls into using the catchphrases like "Doesn't get it" and "fundamental principals"... So, they found a vet, stuck him in front of a camera, fed him a script, and paid him well. (I hope)

Propaganda type #1: the emotional appeal with no real facts.

Iraq has had it's infrastructure shattered by the war. The Iraqis are better off today? Hard to say really. 6 million of them have fled the country, and another 250,000+ lie dead. So it's a little hard to conduct a poll of how they feel about being occupied by a foreign nation... (us).  Their democratically elected government has asked us to leave in 16 months. With luck, and a good election, that's exactly what we'll be doing.

If people get to post gaggingly, saccharine coated, flag waving, spewage, then others get to post their opinions of such.

Freedom of expression and all that.

You know, one of those rights our soldiers service stands for.

And no, I do not have to respect ever human being that's served in our armed forces. I've met too many of them for that.
