I respect both the soldier's right to make that statement and his service to this country.  Seeing things like this makes me proud that we have more than selfish little skatepunks who need a good ass kicking in this country.  I am not a fan of this war or how it has been conducted .... probably a few raised eyebrows on that one.  I am a huge fan of our soldiers.

I also respect the right of others to disagree even if they can't do it in a civil manner at times.  Soldiers throughout this country's history have died to give them that right.  To try to silence even a snarky voice is to dishonor the sacrifice of those soldiers.  Let them exercise the freedom of speech that so many served to protect.

I am impressed that it seems that the posters in this thread managed to avoid crossingthe line to insult the soldier.  That would have caused me to be a snarky asshole right back at them.  Then we would have all been warned by Mod 11 or even gotten that awaiting approval thing before our posts.
And, Kitten, I find you humorous at times too.  Lately, you've seemed more on the attack than normal, though.

You know... it's not like me to whine about unfair treatment, but if you read this thread you will find that many others expressed a similar opinion to mine. I am certainly not alone in being offended by partisan politics utilizing personal stories to broadcast jingoistic messages  . There's much to be angry about, Irishknight.

I never said there wasn't, Kittin.  There is a great deal to be angry about right now for all of us.
I just wanted to thank you for not attacking the soldier.  Often it seems to go the other way.  It reminds of the way my father was called a "baby killer" when he returned from Vietnam.  Even my uncles, who were deserters, had the audacity to call my father those names until the time I was about 15 or 16.  Two of my mother's brothers lost teeth for that offense.  My older brother dealt with one of them and I with the other.  To this day, my dad has never done a thing about it.  I just don't want to see another generation of soldiers get the same treatment.

I don't know if anyone else has addressed this or not so I will comment on it here.

At one point in the video he talks about people's lives being improved since 2002 and he talks about fighting and sacrificing for freedom. I guess what bothers me about that is that the people he is talking about are not American people. If this war were about improving the lives of Americans I would be all for American men and women doing the fighting. However, this hasn't done much to improve the lives of American people. If anything, American people are suffering due, in part to this war. So, why should American lives be sacrificed for another country's freedom?

Admittedly, I don't know everything and I understand very little about politics (most of it just seems to be name calling anyway) but that is something that I keep wondering about. Why should we (Americans) sacrifice, suffer and even die so that a group of people who either couldn't or wouldn't fight for themselves might enjoy the same freedoms that we enjoy? Did anyone else decide to come and fight the British -for- the colonies when this country was born? No. Those who wanted freedom got up and fought for it themselves. So, I guess I get a bit lost when people start making it seem as if every other country in the world is entitled to that same freedom when they are not willing to get up and fight for it for themselves.

Why should we do it for them?

Hi opposingtwilight - you will find that 'going to liberate the Iraqi people' was nothing else than an excuse to invade Iraq. They never asked for the United States to invade them.

Now they have little chance of fighting for their own freedom. Certainly, five years of mayhem since the invasion started has done much to drag the country further into the ground.

So no... it wasn't for the American people, who have payed through the teeth for a spurious and useless war... and it wasn't for the Iraqi people, who have payed with their blood (look up the figures for the number of civilian deaths: they run in the hundreds of thousands) for an unwarranted occupation by another country.

The question still remains: why was the war started in the first place?

Just what kittin said Opposing. Invading a country and ridiculously trying to tie it into 9/11 is not 'helping" them.

Oil. (shrugs) Or hey, maybe the Holy Arc's somewhere in Iraq. I dunno.
It's a horrible thought that people so petty and greedy and downright sociopathic could get elected into office, but those in power are human. How can they be be any different than the rest of us?

as far as i know, it originally was started as America searching for Bin Laden...but they failed...so, to cover up the failure, they started a war. just my opinion

Military contracts also. And you've got to justify the defense budget...

I had to comment on this post. My ex sent a video home for Christmas from the Iraqi theatre and I have to say that his opinions and those of our friends who also had something to say on the video definitely are different than the ones expressed by the gentleman in this video... so while it may be an interesting view, I suspect that it is as subjective as most of the rest of the rhetoric around this campaign.

is this what they're calling it? sounds like they're putting on a play...where can i buy tickets? and, by the way...if it's a theater...is it the longest running play in history?

(sorry, just kinda pictured what George Carlin would have said about this term. it does sound kinda stupid to call it that, though)

I hear you -- and yes, they call it the TOA or Theatre of Operations.

Let's see... first, it was "They have WMD's hidden somewhere!"
Second, it was: "Hey, we're helping to liberate the Iraqi people!"
Third, it was "If we pull out now, the whole area will fall into chaos."
Fourth, it was "When they stand up, we'll stand down."
Fifth, it was "We'll leave when the government asks us to leave!" (which they already have, repeatedly)
Sixth, it's "Let's run out the clock on my Presidency, and leave this shitpile for the next guy."

HA!...That would be even funnier if Americans and Iraqi citizens weren't dying.

Kitten, go up and read post #83 from IrishKnight.  Your answer is there.
