I suppose being obstinate can be a quality...

It could be seen by some as obstinacy, whilst being seen by others as conviction.

I meanwhile, couldnt possibly comment.

Except to point out that conviction is not always a good thing when one looks back through history at those leaders who relied on conviction to determine their policies in a world which can move quickly to outmanouevre fixed positions.

E

I'll apologize in advance.  I've been trying to keep on point, a bit harder than others perhaps, but I have to veer into a tangent now.

Isn't what is described above a very good description of Barack Obama???  Placing ideology above changing reality?  We can see it plainly in his denials about the effect of the surge, and his naive daydream about the genii cheerfully going back into the bottle.  How long is he going to cling to economic and social theories that don't work?

Consider his response at Saddleback about an issue where he had changed his position.  He answered with Clinton's welfare reforms, and how he thought they would really hurt poor people.  He stated that he had gone to work in the Illinois Legislature to gut the changes and install loopholes in how the programs were administered in his state, and the federal reforms wound up not so bad, after all. (I've gone over the difference between a safety net, and a hammock, before.  That system still needs a lot more reform.)

Ok, end hijack, and back to topic.

Sarah Palin is clearly a woman of conviction.  Her actions on the oil and gas commission make that very plain.  She has also learned the importance of tempering her convictions against the realities of life.  She has gone from asking the librarian what the process would be if the community wanted Daddy's Boyfriend out of the _____'s section, to vetoing a law that would have blocked same-sex couples from receiving state benefits.

When she met the corruption that pervades our system, she brought down the Governor.  You know what?  I can vote FOR somebody who clings to that kind of conviction.

Placing ideology above changing reality?  We can see it plainly in his denials about the effect of the surge,

the effect of the surge is nothing of any import.  You might see denials about effect of the surge (admittedly 10-12 others as well...)

But to pay and train mercenaries to provide for the common defense of their own country is ultimately insuring an unending supply of terrorists to future generations.

Frankly N6 ... these sorts of comments from you, kind of shock me. I expect this from many others, but from you, not so much.

Clearly Governor Palin answered many of the questions posed to her. That some see her answers as the party line, and can't see the difference between answer they agree with, and no answer at all ... says nothing about her, and a lot about them.

I don't agree with her on many issues, but do believe she did clearly answer about as many questions as Senator Biden did, whom I do generally agree with him on most issues. Senator Biden also used quite a bit of "party speak," including some dead bang inaccurate information about Senator McCain's votes on certain bills ... but of course, most here like Senator Biden, so his non-answers, party speak, and misrepresentations, are acceptable I guess.

Spot on that there are serious issues with the private military contractors, Ron.  Maybe we should save it until after the elections, so partisanship won't step on the discussion?  At least it's own thread...

Sarah is, of course, the commander of the national guard.  It's not nothing, no matter how some may smirk.  When she starts learning from someone who has excellent military credentials, she'll at least know that logistical support is the expensive side of the paperwork.  I bet she can throw a snappy salute, too.  She also has a son with his boots on the ground (or at least the floor of a pretty secure building).  She will understand the tremendous weight of committing lives.

In times of political shake-ups, sitting on the fence is one way to avoid taking sides.

I was hoping that more than Rich might show up here to explain Palin's good points - though Rich is most welcome, where are the rest?

Though it would be rude to single people out, there are near on a half dozen springing to her defence on the anti-Palin threads - have they really nothing positive to say about her, only rejections of and counter attacks to her negatives?

Even I came up with a positive for her, and I think she's totally unsuited to the office for which she has been put forward.

Have you considered that they may see it as pointless?

After all, apparently trying to be objective and reasonable in your choice, makes one a kind of fence sitter. I have no way of even responding to that ... its a point so utterly pointless ... all you can do is shake your head with wonder.

By the way ... I thought I gave several good qualities, from up here on the fence.

Choosing not to choose is a choice too. It's not pointless to observe that the guise of 'objectivity' is also a form of participation in the political process. You can call it tacit approval.

I would say that the one admirable point I find about her is that she has taken a position and done so unapologetically, maintaining it against quite considerable attack.

I can admire someone for sticking to their guns like that, rather than changing with the tide of popular opinion to appeal to the latest poll, even if I might disagree with their particular position.

And I guess too we should thank her for showing such resolve in demonstrating her character and viewpoint. At least with her we can be pretty sure who she is, what she might do if elected.

All those refreshing traits you named are what I loved and admired about Adolph Hitler.

Much like Palin corrected Biden with 'drill, baby, drill' I'm going to pull a Palin on ya and say it's not 'gosh darn it'.. it's 'dog gone it.' I don't know for sure, but I think Evangelicals consider 'darn' a swear word unless it involves holy socks or, yanno, some shit like that.

You can hardly fault her for not discussing the loss of 159,000 jobs, Rich.

As you rightfully pointed out, she had to say something.

By gosh, by golly.
