Regardless of how the media is trying to stretch it and twist it, the "common person, simple thinking, disconnected from "big politics", hardcore family values" image she has created is her major selling point to the middle class. Of course, the media is going to eat it up, because this is really the first time (at least in my short life span) we have had a candidate who presented herself as "one of the middle class" as opposed to a "Washington politician who is for the middle class".

Yeah I know that's what they are TRYING to portray her as, but to me she's just another politician with a new angle. What a clever way to cover for being clueless and stupid. Only it didn't fool me and it doesn't fool a lot of people, and guess what? I'm MIDDLE CLASS! In fact I'm probably more middle class than she is. Do you really think she ever clipped coupons, shopped in thrift stores or even bought a used car? I doubt it.

LadyEllen -> RE: Palin positives (10/6/2008 6:24:05 AM)

In summary then, Palin positives are -
Her ordinary background
Her experience as a small business owner
That she has some appeal to ordinary people and an ability to promote herself as one of “us”

Her meteoric rise successfully fighting corruption within her own party
Her strong convictions, held unapologetically and against considerable resistance
That she is quite open about her views regardless of drawing adverse criticism for them

That she pushed for and established a police force for her town and a sports complex
That she managed to reduce public expenditure in Alaska

Her experience as a community organiser, mayor and state governor
Her lack of entanglements in high-level politics
That she handled high-level televised debate well for a newcomer

This is a reasonable set of positives – even if one disagrees with her viewpoints as I do and questions very much her suitability and especially her readiness for such high office as I do. I believe McCain and his advisors have done her a great disservice in dragging her into this and that her acceptance of his invitation to run and her apparent willingness to be coached for the role is evidence of her immaturity as yet, unable to see that she is being used in this situation to no great advantage either for her or the ordinary people from whom she is apparently drawn.

If McCain wins, then despite on the job training she will still be in way over her head. If McCain loses, then despite being a fighter she will find it very difficult to come back from.

It may just be that Palin may make a good VP, even a good President at some point, but that point is not now, and her presence on the ballot now may just have robbed the US of a good leader a decade or two from now by which time she should have had time to iron out the all too apparent shortcomings of her current candidacy.

You left out that she pisses off the people who then piss off the undecided moderate voters.  [;)]

Couldn't we say very much the same of the top of the Dem ticket, though?  That with his youth, he could have focused on accomplishing things in the Senate, even gaining some form of executive experience perhaps, before reaching for the highest office there is?

We might indeed Rich; but I've said my piece on it against my better judgement that it might provoke a slanging match just like with the other threads, and I've tried in this instance not to call names but instead to try to give a viewpoint of her qualities without going that way.

But since you asked, I would agree that Obama also lacks experience - not to the same degree perhaps, but certainly he too may not be as ready as he might be. What Obama has though is a capacity to inspire in a more rounded and universal way than Palin in my opinion and right now I think that almost regardless of any other factors, the US and the western world in general needs an inspirational leader like him.

meatcleaver -> RE: Palin positives (10/6/2008 6:57:09 AM)

You don't need experience to be a President or a leader, that has been proved time and time again. What you need to look at is the people gethered round the young pretender, his/her ability to choose men and women that can offer advice and have policies delegated to them. This is where McCain loses badly for simply choosing Palin, she offers nothing but eye candy in a PR campaign, she adds nothing else to the ticket.

I'd still fuck her though. Oh oh oooooooooooooooh my god! Oh god, I don't doooo anal but I wiiiiill for the VP j-j-j-jooooob!

Wank fodder.............

"Regardless of how the media is trying to stretch it and twist it, the "common person, simple thinking, disconnected from "big politics", hardcore family values" image she has created is her major selling point to the middle class."

If only she were authentic and not a liar about the chef to nowhere(that she claimed she fired, trying to make herself appear middle-class)and the bridge to nowhere, then regular folks(non-cons) might think that she has middle class values.

Not sure what "common people" you`re speaking of.

And the media has nothing to do with how she`s been portrayed. They`re just reporting the news.If she were genuine and without an embarrassing track record, then more "common"folks would like her. But after some scrutiny, they don`t.McCain`s numbers have only gone down sinse she joined, even among conservatives.

If she were really middle class, and really did fire her private chef, and didn`t vindictively fire the head of Alaska`s state police, then that is what would get reported and that`s what folks would know about her.If there`s any spin going on,it`s to hide all those"middle-class" values she`s brought.

I`ll take an authentic elitists like the McCains over a phony like Palin, any day.

I love this Palin vs Media ploy.It works so well, yet so made up.

But it`s Palin vs the American people.

To complain when the truth nips someone in the ass and them blame the media for it,is not honest.

As with any judgment of a politician, it comes down to personal interruption. Since I don't know her personally, I am not going to say that I'm right and your wrong regarding her quality and character. I'm just providing a different perspective. Draw your own conclusions.

With that said, the probability of someone completely clueless and stupidity impressing me as much as she did in the debate is pretty low. That makes feel better as I drag my feet into the polling booth and cast my ballet while muttering "Goddamn it...." under my breath (Or is that "Dog gone it" [:D])

I hope you don't get offended by this MR, because it stems from a true curiousity and is not meant to be a dig at your age, but I do consider you as one of our bright youth of today who will impact the US of tomorrow in a significant way (not you, personally, but your age group) so I'm especially curious as to what you look for in a leader; which issues you think are most important to your personal future and the future of our country and how exactly Palin impressed you? Which answers to which questions were most impressive? Where did she get it 'right'? What did you see that I didn't see?

No offense taken. I have a pretty thick skin when it comes to politics and my age, mostly from living in a state where I am the only heterosexual male who is pro-gay marriage and routinely have to defend why I don't think homosexuality is a "choice" on a weekly basis. Most people around me think social liberalism, much like bisexuality, is a phase you go through during your 20s. [:D]

I don't base my decisions off of whether or not I think Candidate X would be a good leader, because I've never met any of them personally and I have to go off of what the media says to make my character judgment. Given the amount of bullshit that goes in the election year, I don't think I can make a broad-minded educated opinion on that character.

I also refuse to support either platform or join a party. Some things (mostly social views) I am liberal on and some things (mostly economic and political issues) I am conservative on.

So I base my decision off of what I think the country needs at the time based off what political viewpoints they consistently hold to during election year.

My decision to vote for McCain and Palin comes from the fact that as much I HATE the idea of voting for a platform that is anti-gay marriage and pro-life, I HATE the idea of voting for a platform that will mean higher taxes, big government spending, and universal health care in the middle of an economic crisis even more. In my eyes, it would be a nightmare and therefore McCain and Palin are the lesser of two evils.

8 years from now, when we are way better off economically, then I would consider siding with a party that represents my social viewpoints.

As far as the debate, Palin didn't cop out once under "I'm only been doing this 5 weeks" and didn't respond with an "I don't know". (Okay, I might be sticking my ass out here, because I missed parts of it). She held her own with Joe Biden who has been doing this for decades and I thought that, along with the way she handled herself, was impressive. It showed to me, at least, there is some room for doubt in regards to media portrayal of her and makes me feel a little bit more confident with the future in the hands of the people I am grudgingly voting for.

Biden, Palin Agree On Gay Unions

Gay marriage? No, said Joe Biden. No, said Sarah Palin. No surprise there, since no one on either ticket has endorsed gay marriage.

The surprise, though, was Palin going out of her way to note that she and John McCain would not block benefits provided to gay or lesbian couples that are equivalent to the benefits provided to married heterosexual couples. Contracts, hospital visits -- we won't get in the way of that, Palin said.

Democrats regularly talk about those rights. Biden was quick to say he was glad they were in agreement on that point.

Thanks for posting that. That was one of the parts of the debate that I missed and I am really actually surprised. I was under the impression that Bidon and Obama were supporters and McCain and Palin were strongly opposed. A false impression clearly, but in all honesty, my focus has been more on the economic issues.

It makes me feel better about my decision to go with McCain and Palin.

Sanity -> RE: Palin positives (10/6/2008 4:20:14 PM)

Glad I could help.

I was in my garage all day Saturday working on my classic 1975 Dodge 4X4 Shortbed, getting that bad boy ready for hunting season, and several of the news channels were looping that debate all day long and since I have a TV in my shop, I was able to absorb just about every moment of that debate.

The question is if she and McCain are elected (which I hope to Heaven they aren't), will she be a better shot than Cheney?
