I am going to take that as a serious question, even if we are in random stupidity, which by the way seems entirely appropriate :)  So here is my answer.

Yes, my hope was that the post would spawn discussion and debate.  I think it could have been an interesting discussion. Why do we post? What is our expectation when posting. What brings us together. What exactly do I mean by affirmation? 

Because it can be a broadly defined term meaning an act of validation and confirmation, or it can simply mean affirming something to be true and valid. Do I mean that people should not come to the board for validation of their views and feelings? 

Actually, no I don't. In fact I think most people come to a d/s discussion board like this for confirmation of concepts or ideas that the may have but are unsure of or are uncomfortable with. They come here to give and  receive validation. They state how they feel and they read the responses and they make of them what they will. As martha says, its a good thing.

But those are not the people I was addressing. What I find boring is the people who post for no other reason than to receive a pat on the back and chorus of agreement. They are not looking to expand their knowledge, or to engage in discussion, they are looking to stroke their ego and confirm their false superiority. They KNOW they are right, they only seek affirmation of that fact and ignore everything else. This is a different kind of affirmation and it is not necessarily a positive one.

In any case I have no problem with the response. People will discuss and debate what they want to, trash what they want to and find validity where they care to.

It is all good.

And isn't one of the purposes if seeking validation is to see how others think and/or to gauge whether or not your opinion is valid, half baked or completely full of bullshit?

Now this is quite the judgmental statement if I've ever seen one. How can you presume that the people you're referring to are doing so out of their own selfish motives? The only way you can actually claim this is so is by actually asking these people in question why. Keep in mind there are also dimwits who will make statements which may seem to be valid yet when one looks through the bullshit and actually sees it for what it is...BS.

Ok, let's get serious here.  One of the things that I hate on these boards is when people, such as yourself, post a very vague OP & then wait till they get some responses & then post what it was they were really talking about or wanted to know.  Your OP was quite vague & could not have sparked a debate or discussion along the lines you were hoping, because you didn't tell anyone what you were hoping to discuss/debate till page 3.  I'm a terrible mind-reader & I don't get subtle hints.  I'm a very direct person & understand better when someone is direct with me.  Sometimes, this requires smacking me upside the head to make sure I'm paying attention, but in this case, there wasn't very much to go on.

As always, IMO only & YMMV

i post a thread if i have a question that i couldnt find in the archives...(to avoid LAs wrath mostly...kisses LA)

i answer any thread that i find interesting.
if i were looking for external validation of my thoughts i would turn to my real time friends because they have a history of dealing with me and are better equipped to handle my questions.
if i want a pat on the back from CM folks...i look for bear and GT mostly but now, thanks to you i think i may have found 2 more snugglebunnies. And they never seem to pat me on my ....back.

Exactly who and what I was talking about, Des.

However, people who take themselves so seriously seem to need an emotional enema, so that's when I sprinkle my responding posts to their knuckle-dragging with *giggles* and cute smileys.  It tends to frustrate them, which in turn, amuses me.  I think it's a win-win, don't you?
