BDSM is a fad for some I think, but I think it is also gaining popularity now that more people are gaining access to the internet.

I think it's a good thing. While some would prefer to try and keep it as some kind of secret society, I think the information floating around will eventually lead to a better public view.

Its cool as long as the word "cool" is cool. [:D] If the internet and CM existed in the 80s, your question would have been "Is BDSM Still Groovy?" [sm=Groaner.gif] (correct me if I am wrong)

Yes, you are wrong.  "Groovy" is not an 80's word.  And BBS systems were popular throughout the 80's for sharing of information.

Oh dear. Guess I shouldn't speak of things that existed before I was born [:(]

However, I still say its only cool until some new word comes up. And with the possible exception of the Japanese, BDSM is most certainly NOT cool in the majority of asian communities. I think I have mentioned that my local community is, and needs to be, a secret society.

its just rad man.....and grooooooooovy......

can u dig it???

roughleather -> RE: Is BDSM Still CooL? (10/8/2008 10:00:38 AM)

No, it's not really cool any more. It was cool when Versace had BDSM-inspired designs, and the kinky parties in LA drew film industry people. That was years ago.

Nothing's cool when old people are involved. They carry the stench of the grave.

Again with you and the old thing. It seems to me as you're getting some education from "old people" on these boards. It's a good thing as the reek of your hubris is clouding our cool atmosphere.

tweedydaddy -> RE: Is BDSM Still CooL? (10/8/2008 11:24:55 AM)

It's way cool. No doubt about it.

If you're only doing something in order to shock your parents, then you aren't mature and you also aren't interested in it. There are many of us old enough to be your parents or grandparents. Allow me to assure you that we have zero interest in cool. We do this because this kind of a dynamic suits us best.

FRSguy -> RE: Is BDSM Still CooL? (10/8/2008 11:49:02 AM)

Cool question but nearly impossible to answer.  I think I would have to ask was it ever cool to begin with. The answer to that could quit possibly be NO and I think you are probably confusing it with the up and down popularity of people who are more into the clothing than anything else. You can find plenty of examples on regular T.V. of vanillas wearing collars with rings for attachments and as far as I know a lot of the clothing in BDSM is borrowed from various fashions throughout history for the most part. This creates a problem if you view historical art and photographs or in any type of media in that the style of clothing although fetish today was not at the time.

Sex is something that was at one point very different from culture to culture depending on what was popular at the time often based on stories and such that had some kind of shock effect on the public like in ancient Rome big cocks were a sign of ignorance and mental disorders and that’s why a lot of painting that depict naked men have small dicks and Romans spouses didn’t  kiss because it was considered a childish act done between mothers and there young not between adults. An example of a modern day event that changed sexuality for a lot of Americans would be the Clinton / Lewinsky (not sure of spelling) event, blowjobs are fashionable now and woman read articles how to blow and put fingers in mens asses where only a few decades ago they could have been jailed. Today a lot of cultures are finding a middle ground due to the Internet, which allows public gathering of subcultures that in the past was unable to find one another.

I haven’t really seen any evidence that would suggest that the number of people that identify with BDSM has actually changed any however there is a lot to suggest that much more people play around with it more which is most likely due to the media. The reason the media is getting so involved is because well… they are running out of things to shock there audience and BDSM raises a huge question mark. The general public has no idea what a scene is and that a great deal of it is fake in the sense that it is controlled based on the responses of the submissive.  They have no idea that Doms train and learn it as a craft as it were.  To them, in horror mode, they expect that the subs flesh will be ripped open at any second and when they don’t see it happen they are relived but its the tension that it could happen.  Because of laws and the lack of organization and a book that people would agree on its kind of hard to truly show what its all about because its all kind of based on or made for people that have a degree of understanding.

There are huge road blocks standing in the way of figuring out what people truly did in history because much of it was suppressed. So now after all that horseshit let me try to answer your question.  NO, it is not popular now, its not considered cool. You may vary well be seen as a monster to people outside this subculture because they don’t understand what it is that we do and why. Vanillas continuously group together BDSM with a wide range of other subcultures and they put it all in a basket that also contains people that rape, murder, molest, and suppress woman rights.  But, look on the bright side, you can wear all kinds of kinky shit that is cool that is also associated with BDSM and not necessarily be associated with it and is a form of self empowerment for many young people. Its kind of like saying … I fuck and I do it the way I want to which has kind of in a way been a very powerful driving force in kink for the last 150 years or so.

One thing just as a side note because I love this…LOL.In colonial America it was illegal for a wife to not have sex with her husband and vice versa.  Woman who’s husbands proved that there wives were not having sex frequently enough were stripped naked, had a sign placed around there neck and placed in stocks for the day in the town square where people in the village would through rotten food at them, spit on them and call them names. In the state of Maine, not having sex is legal grounds for a divorce.  Stress causing interference with a woman’s ability to perform sexually for her husband is lawsuit material which to this day is very frequent.

Oh, here is a little hint. Take a private survey of subs and ask what is in there medicine cabinets past and present.  You will probably find that a lot subs (as well as sex offenders)  were taking a very specific family of drugs just prior or during the time they were involved or got hooked on kink.  If you ask them how they got it you will also find that the majority were prescribed by doctors without any follow up by there doctors on the effects or for that mater prescribed without the patient being told of the side effects of the drug and that changes in desires might have been a side effect and also that research shows that BDSM activities have a similar effect as these families of drugs. Because these drugs were givin out like candy during the late 80’s on… it is also marked by a huge increases in public acceptance of kink…LOL

Of course we do.  But the goth crowd really digs that whole "grave" thing so it works out ok.

Hey, speak for yourself Des.  THIS old fart was hoping to get all cool and edgy.  Now that I understand it aint cool anymore, I'm dropping the whole thing in favor of golf.  Although, now that I think of it, collars are only $16.95 at Petco and last time I looked at golf clubs...  *shudders*.  Then there's that whole golfer attire thing to consider.

It's comforting to know that only old people die.

~FR~

If you are particpating in BDSM practices just because you think it makes you look cool. You are doing it for all the wrong reasons.

Personally I don't care if it's considered cool, considered haneous, or believed to be the sexual desires of the devil. It's a part of who I am and a part of what makes my life more fulfilled. I've never been one to care if I was part of the "cool" group or not. The opinion of random strangers has no bearing on me to be honest.
