LadyEllen -> Independence for Wales - NOW! (10/11/2008 4:28:26 PM)

There was a political slot the other night over here (England), featuring Plaid Cymru (the Welsh nationalists).

Plaid Cymru used the slot to tell of the need for a prison in north Wales, as there isnt one and currently its a minimum 4 hour roundtrip for families and solicitors to see prisoners and people on remand in England.

They have a site in mind - a good site that was a former factory - it would provide employment and an economic boost to the area too, if the prison were located there.

Thus far - I was in total agreement.

Then, the leader of Plaid Cymru had the incredible gall to think that the money for this prison should come from the British taxpayer as a whole (or in other words, from England); incredible, notwithstanding that Prisons come from central taxation, in that the English taxpayer already covers the majority of the cost of the Welsh budget - the same budget under which the Welsh get free medical prescriptions whilst we in England pay for ours (and theirs).

I estimate that if the Welsh paid their prescription charges themselves, as we do here, this would virtually pay for the prison that's so badly needed by freeing up money in the Welsh budget - but of course Plaid Cymru wouldnt countenance that as it would make them unpopular with their electorate.

Independence for Wales - now! Maybe then the Welsh can play politics with their own money, not ours!

Yeah, well, the Elglish don't want you, either.

You really should start with Northern Ireland.

Ulster is long "lost" FDD (if we ever really wanted it that is) - Sinn Fein/IRA only came on board with democracy after learning about demographics.

Procreating your way to the Republic is so much more satisfying than all that bombing and shooting (in the main)

Contentious and the usual American over simplification of the problem.

None of the voters want independance for Ulster. Some wish to join the republic and others wish to stay part of Great Britain. Sooner or later i think the electorate will decide on the former, although in the current economic climate, i wouldnt be sure of that.

That's because you keep picking on the Elglish.  Try looking at things from their perspective for a change.

Is it worth winding them up?  I mean, it doesn't really seem a fair fight.  As I recall, their main contributions to British life consist of leeks, cheese on toast and laverbread.

I'm 1/8 Welsh, you can tell by my singing voice, well you can’t because you’ve never heard it.[8|]

What will they do? Sing at us?

Politesub53 -> RE: Independence for Wales - NOW! (10/11/2008 5:01:43 PM)

Anyone who inveted Cheese on Toast is good enough for me.

LadyEllen -> RE: Independence for Wales - NOW! (10/11/2008 5:03:36 PM)

its always worth winding up the Welsh, Venatrix!

when they get really wound up, they start explaining what immense contributions their country has made to the world - though they cant explain quite why these great historical achievements by Welsh people were all accomplished elsewhere in the world

and there's all that spitting and coughing they use as a language

You just want something to go with your bread and water - per your remark on the other thread.

That's because they ran out of vowels and couldn't afford to buy any more.

LadyEllen -> RE: Independence for Wales - NOW! (10/11/2008 5:07:34 PM)

Nah Venatrix - they have more vowels than us I think? Not that they look like vowels, but hey, when you cant spell for shit who's counting?
