LadyEllen -> BBC property programmes make me angry (10/16/2008 2:06:26 PM)

I have to say, those BBC programmes always made me angry - but now they make me even more angry.

You know the ones - where they help out some couple to find a new house, show them two or three and the couple select one they like.

Sounds innocent enough. But here's my problem; these couples are never ordinary people, the houses they're looking at are not those to which any ordinary person could aspire - indeed, the houses they have when the programme starts are not ones to which any ordinary person could aspire.

"Oh yes" she gushes "Tarquin and I shall be very happy here. That mansion we live in is simply far too small for us - we need more space - and its within our £500,000-00 budget too!" "Indeed, Carmella can now have more space for her designer clothes" he will reply.

At a time when ordinary people found themselves unable to acquire a small house within the paltry budgets afforded them by their paltry wages - and so were forced to take ridiculous mortgages to even stand a chance - this was bad enough.

At a time when ordinary people are finding themselves thrown out of their tiny, overmortgaged, negative equity houses, onto the streets as the economy deteriorates and they lose jobs at which they worked well over the working time limits set by the EU (opted out of by the UK) to try to keep, the continuation of these shows is just absolutely insensitive and frankly insulting.

Its time for these shows to be ditched.

The US has shows like that as well, LE. I find them really offensive.

"Top Gear" has become something of an obscenity to me as well. Those guys testing nothing but cars that no one but people in Bill Gate's income level could afford... it's just not giving me any useful information! On occasion, they try to review something affordable, but in most cases end up mocking the vehicle, and the people who might buy them. Fun on occasion, yes... but I think the show would be much more entertaining if it wasn't all just cars that cost half a million, and being outright insulting to the bulk of it's viewers.

All of these shows are what a therapist friend of mine likes to term: "an invitation to suffer." Basically, they mock you and your values by providing an endless array of "bright shiney objects" that leave you feeling like you somehow aren't living the posh life, like you're somehow supposed to be. Yet, none of it, not the huge mansion, not the supercar, not the high fashion clothing, or all the latest in gadgets... none of it will nessiccarily make you happier.

Materialisim: a distraction from what's really important.

I dunno that show..but I love "Ramsey" and the one with "Gillian" I think her name is who can take off multi-stone of weight in eight weeks.

seeksfemslave -> RE: BBC property programmes make me angry (10/16/2008 3:14:29 PM)

I like all property programmes on all channels. Change to see a useful subject being covered.
The arties can go and whistle for their subsidy.

Wrt to Tarquin and Poppy its no good featuring some inarticulate couple .
Confident types with spark and flair are required

Did anyone see Bobski the builder on Ch4 tonight.
House extensions were shown being built by a Brit  who appeared to be a bit of a cowboy and a Pole who worked like a demon got caught out and had to reroute the sewage pipes and made a major mistake on the lounge floor.

Aneirin -> RE: BBC property programmes make me angry (10/16/2008 3:54:55 PM)

I agree with you Lady E. I have brought up this very subject on here before, it is apalling and a massive insult. What I said before, was that these programs are on during the day, where many that cannot afford watch them and get more depressed. Like who has got all this money to go up and down the country choosing houses, when most people are limited to very few, that they might be able to struggle to afford.

And now there is this bailout by Brown, bailing the banks out, like, why, so we can get back to what we had before the crunch, houses at three times their worth and people paying through the nose for the merest of hovels. Perhaps it was greed that caused this situation, is it they want to go back to that ? This crunch effectively brings house prices down, good, get them down and keep them there, then that green belt of ours, let's start building.

Before you start thinking that that is not nice, we must preserve the green belt, well, I am a nature lover, and I love the wide open spaces, but they are no use if there are people homeless in our country.

TheHeretic -> RE: BBC property programmes make me angry (10/16/2008 6:46:47 PM)

We had one here that had the houses you wanted to see, LadyE.  It was called "Flip This House."  The premise was that you bought a crappy little house, spruced it up, and sold it for much more.  They never got to NOT being able to sell it, and winding up as a section 8 (gov't subsidized) landlord.

Now, Bipo, Top Gear is another matter.  I record that.  The cars are eye candy, and the show is fun and funny.  Wacky adventures in cars, from the super to junk.  It isn't the car I want so much, as the hosts job.

Vendaval -> RE: BBC property programmes make me angry (10/16/2008 7:00:51 PM)

Sounds like a downsized version of Robin Leach and Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous.  Given the current economic conditions, this type of programming is in very bad taste.

susie -> RE: BBC property programmes make me angry (10/17/2008 2:06:56 AM)

I agree Lady Ellen. How the hell can a young couple with a couple of kids be looking to buy a £750k house? Its annoying me even more right now as being off work because of the brain tumour I have no way of paying my mortgage and face possible repossession.

As for Top Gear,it is the most watched programme in our house. Part of the success of the programme is I think because they feature cars that most of us would not ever get the chance to drive.

GabrielleSlave -> RE: BBC property programmes make me angry (10/17/2008 2:19:29 AM)

My house has been on the market for a year now.  Sold it before Chrstimas last year, but the chain collapsed and do you think i can sell it now?  i have done everything i can to make it more appealing to buyers like these stupid totally condescending programmes say.  Nothing they say will get my house sold, so i avoid them like the plague....too depressed as it is, why make things worse.  i have to sell because of my divorce, but there aint no magic wand!!!  No one can get mortgages so what is the point of putting these godforsaken programmes on.  Do they want us all to commit suicide?  Well, perhaps not as there would be no one to pay their license fee....

As for Top Gear - just love it, very funny, cheers me up!

seeksfemslave -> RE: BBC property programmes make me angry (10/17/2008 2:19:41 AM)

I see the kommissar tendency is alive and well.
If I cant have it you shouldnt have it either.

If material things dont make you happy why worry about the miserable rich.

The criticism of Top Gear I agree with.
I do like Clarksons non PC attitude tho'

LadyEllen -> RE: BBC property programmes make me angry (10/17/2008 3:46:46 AM)

Its true - Top Gear does look at some ridiculous cars, but its also true that its made such fun that quite often if there's nothing on, we'll watch repeats. And its presented by Richard Hammond......

There is a difference though - Top Gear is made by petrol heads for petrol heads. The idea seems to be from the off, that since we plebs will never get to find out much about the cars they review, this is a good chance otherwise to do so. Plus which, Richard Hammond.

But there does seem to be a problem with the BBC in a wide range of shows - property, cars, and the holiday shows, where again, they review holidays to exotic locations and then tell us what a good deal it is at only £2000-00 per person per week based on 4 sharing - far beyond the budget of many families for a car, let alone a week away.

TNstepsout -> RE: BBC property programmes make me angry (10/17/2008 5:43:07 AM)

Yeah, they have those here and I feel the same way. I never watch them just because of that. I watched one once where there was a young couple (24 years old) looking for a new house and they had a 400k budget!!! Good grief, most 24 year olds I know have a 40k budget!

bipolarber -> RE: BBC property programmes make me angry (10/17/2008 6:32:04 AM)

TV apparently lives in "McCain World"... where middle class is anyone earing just under $5 million a year.

Still, you can't blame John McCain. He's just as hurt by the housing crisis as the rest of us... in fact he's hurt ELEVEN TIMES as much... LOL

This is total bollocks. The Top Gear team regularly give reliability and inexpensiveness top marks and have devoted entire shows to the concept. Examples that come to mind are when they took cheap cars across part of Africa competing with a VW Beetle for the journey, with the Beetle winning hands down, and the time they tried to destroy a Toyota Hilux and couldn't, no better ad' right there for affordable ruggedness and reliability. And Jeremy Clarkson often promotes the great Japanese contribution to motoring - reliability - and points to the inherent racism in European and American car reports which promote their own so-called stylish shit.

If anything Top Gear take a lot of time lampooning BMW wankers who can be seen any day belting down an M motorway while talking on a cellphone.

I think you were watching a different version of the programme to the rest of us then. The team did take cheap cars across part of Africa but they were not cars that the average person anywhere would be considering buying. They were not even competing with a Beetle. The Beetle was the "back up" car that whoever had a car that failed would be forced to drive. It did not win "hands down" as they all made it to the end of the challenge.

Please make sure of your facts before you post. So far all the posts I have seen you make have contained no fact at all but your made up form of logic.

We watched the same show but you failed to understand what it was about. The show had the presenters with a limited budget with which they could buy any car. They did that and competed with the Beetle, all the cars making it, but only just, with one hardly recognisable as a car. The Beetle did the same journey and was complete at the end. Right at the end they stood around arguing about who had won, and then Clarkson reminds them all who won, and the final shot is the Beetle tootling past with its distinctive burble. The VW Beetle won. D'uh.

The lesson there for all to see, was when you've got no money, make your car choice carefully, and buy something like a Beetle which if even 40 years old will still be a good runner.

Do not tell me what I do and do not understand. Obviously you see things in your own little way which does not match with anyone elses view. As I have worked with and remain friends with the main producer of the programme I can assure you I fully understand the programme.

Perhaps you should now stop posting about things you know nothing about.

Oh, now we have the ' I've worked with so and so know much more than you ' line. Bullshit.

Did you watch the entire show and did you miss the final scene where they argued over who won and Clarkson says it is obvious and then the Beetle tootles past ? Hmm ? Well ? He said the Beetle won, how do you explain that ?

Certainly not BULLSHIT. I have spent the last 20 years working for one of the biggest UK broadcasters / production companies. Sorry if you don't like that but I only deal in fact.

Perhaps you should try talking about things you know about in future instead of talking out of your arse.
