MistressVix -> Come on Dominas, Doms, subs, slaves etc (8/4/2004 2:20:52 PM)

However do Y/you expect respect/submission or expect to submit etc etc when Y/you can't string together a sentence or more?

I read many posts on fora across the internet and what never ceases to amaze Me is the illiteracy levels! Okay, I'm on My high horse, but, if Y/you're on a pc Y/you no doubt have access to a word processing program with spell check. Okay, W/we all realise that Mr Gates software isn't perfect but surely its better than nothing. Discrete, extream etc are just simple words but spelled wrongly too often. FYI the correct spellings are discreet and extreme. Also, one cannot be a Dominate - that is a verb. For example a sub should say "i want a Dominant to dominate me"... not "i want a dominate".

I'm not trying to rant, just wondering where basic literacy went to when I obviously wasn't looking. Surely not everyone is dyslexic?

A possible way of correcting this - instead of delving into SM101, how about a mass enrolment to adult literacy 101?

I have to say that if I was looking at your resumes for a job vacancy, most wouldn't make the first cut.. and that says a lot for the state of schooling today.. *shudders* and is so glad to have had great English teachers at schools that concentrated on learning.

*whew* the air must be mighty thin up there, Vix. Down here we don't use all those "////" when we talk to one another. It's alright, don't panic! Take your time, breathe deep, and get to know everyone.

In addition to all that, typos don't generally reflect on one's literacy level, since we don't have spell check here on the forums. However, we do have an "edit" feature. [;)] Welcome to the boards!

Calm down take a deep breath, after all one of these people could be our next president.

I just love these animations they come up with.

Hi,

I enjoyed your post. You aren't the first to complain. And you won't be the last.

Anyway, before the flamethrowers assemble, I'm going to get my coupla words in.

I have to admit I have a hard time reading stuff when people forget to put spaces in between words. Or neglect punctuation altogether. In fact, I find a man who can express himself well--and use commas at the same time--is highly crush-worthy.

Then again, if I was an old-school speller, the uncapitalized i in your post would give me fits, and so would the C/cyberprotocol.

Welcome to the boards, Vix.

January

MistressVix -> RE: Come on Dominas, Doms, subs, slaves etc (8/4/2004 3:04:05 PM)

I'm not equating literacy with intelligence, I can see the intelligence out there, I just can't make sense out of it all!

Not saying the board should read like Shakespeare, hey no one would understand a word, Me included, lol.. and I know there's no spell check here, but there surely must be some individual access to one.. and if Your current President is anything to go by.. well I don't do politics, *laughs*, so I'll keep out of that debate!

But its the 21st century, a lot of people here are in the same age bracket as me - so what happened at school? I truly care about education and it just saddens me to see a beautiful language torn apart, that's all.

MistressVix -> RE: Come on Dominas, Doms, subs, slaves etc (8/4/2004 3:08:41 PM)

January, I left a non capitalised I in my post? Uhoh, even My fingers slip sometimes, will have to find a whip and punish Myself for that! No, I'm not going to blame My slippery keyboard, lol!

I'm glad you see MY point re punctuation etc, its so easy to misinterpret what someone means, especially when a person would be breathless if they tried to say it aloud lol!

Thanks for the welcome everyone, didn't mean to come across bitchy, as I said, worried for the state of the world - if no one can spell, eventually there will be a complete lack of global communication and, worst case scenario - someone will push that little red button since there will be no one left to teach language skills!

PS - to be honest, I hate the W/w etc so will be knocking that on the head and type properly in future; didn't want to offend anyone with that!

I agree with you, Vix, however, while a beautiful language is important to preserve with all of its integrity, it would be a shame to sacrifice that what the vehicle was constructed to convey.

I admire your grace, Vix.

sub4hire -> RE: Come on Dominas, Doms, subs, slaves etc (8/4/2004 3:13:24 PM)

I can't answer your questions Vix. I can tell you my tales of life in the US. I'm taking it you are from another country?

As far as literacy goes the US, well certain states are severely lagging behind. Then of course there are the poorer area's of the country.
A few years back, maybe ten now. My brother was living in Oklahoma. Pathetic school system there. When I was in high school. My Aunt and Uncle moved to OK. My cousin was in the same grade I was in. Tenth at the time. In OK she had already finished everything she needed to graduate. So she sat around for two years putting in 4 hours a day doing absolutely nothing. They say California is behind.

Anyway, while my brother lived there his marriage broke up. His wife at the time took the boys to live with her relatives in Mississippi. Where they didn't go to school in their area. They were taught to respect their elders and kill possums for a living. For food.

What I'm getting at is the United States is very diverse. There are affluent area's where we learn. Then poor as dirt area's. Sadly we don't get to choose what area we are to grow up in.
The school system today sucks from when I was in school. There are many factors for that. It is'nt one single persons fault. I know my nephews are only learning a fraction of what I did in school. I know the first few years after I was out I had only learned a fraction of what those kids had.

Anyway, what I'm trying to say here is sometimes that person who cannot spell at all has wisdom well beyond any of us. I don't disagree sometime's is is very hard to read. If we can get past that, we may just learn something.

gitta -> RE: Come on Dominas, Doms, subs, slaves etc (8/4/2004 3:14:13 PM)

Smiling this slavegirl wonders how one can come here and call us illiterate, that we need to ENROLMENT (proper spelling would be enrollment) in literacy 101...and not REALIZE (proper spelling is not realise) that we are human and do make mistakes???

smiles
gitta

MistressVix -> RE: Come on Dominas, Doms, subs, slaves etc (8/4/2004 3:14:30 PM)

LadyB, I normally am graceful and thank you for pointing out the other side. Its less of the mis-spelling and more the sentiment behind the posts - I think its a shame if they are misinterpreted due to bad schooling.. lol.. there I go again.

However, point taken, but I do agree with January in that a man who knows how to use commas, or heaven forbid, a semi colon, would have me respecting him, no matter whether top/bottom/dom/sub/slave or the mailman!

Rant well and truly over..

MistressVix -> RE: Come on Dominas, Doms, subs, slaves etc (8/4/2004 3:16:32 PM)

Gitta - proper spelling is dependent on country.. realise has an S in it in England, and enrolment one L... your dictionary may differ.. however .. mold is mould in the UK and color is colour. I'm not talking about those interpretations, but I have yet to see a dictionary in any version of English that has the mis-spellings I mentioned originally....

gitta -> RE: Come on Dominas, Doms, subs, slaves etc (8/4/2004 3:18:34 PM)

smiles, thank you, and perhaps other things you see wrong with us may be due to an ocean between us?

smiles
gitta

MistressVix -> RE: Come on Dominas, Doms, subs, slaves etc (8/4/2004 3:32:04 PM)

Gitta.. the ocean? The one full of scuzzy things from both sides? lol.. I don't think we're all inherently different, after all we are all human (waits for flames from wolves and vampires, but I think you get the idea lol). Its just my education background, I cry for the state of the world if there comes a time where we can't communicate...

Gloria - I truly had NO idea re your school system - I thought ours had downgraded immensely and I do apologise (Gitta, it has an S in UK English.. lol) if I offended anyone. I thought education was a right of all in the Western world and if any moderator person wants to remove the whole darn thread for the sake of world/board peace.. please go right ahead!

It was a plea from the heart that twisted between brain and keyboards, however, if anyone wants a few free English lessons.. *laughs*.. feel free to ask.... ok, enough already, its late here and even Mistresses need their sleep...

LadyBeckett -> RE: Come on Dominas, Doms, subs, slaves etc (8/4/2004 3:32:09 PM)

They can't push that little red button if their hands are tied up. [;)]

MistressVix -> RE: Come on Dominas, Doms, subs, slaves etc (8/4/2004 3:36:16 PM)

Runs back to applaud LadyB's thoughts re the Prez being tied up... if only... and that goes for a certain T Blair too... *laughs* and finally turns pc off before square eye syndrome sets in.

starshine -> RE: Come on Dominas, Doms, subs, slaves etc (8/4/2004 3:39:42 PM)

I'm sitting on the fence on this one - can see both points of view, but have to admit that some posts are hard to read; in fact have given up on more than one occasion due to being unable to decipher the intent.. however, now that Gloria has enlightened us Brits on the US schooling system, has any presidential candidate put that high on their agenda? Just thinking aloud!

sub4hire -> RE: Come on Dominas, Doms, subs, slaves etc (8/4/2004 3:52:00 PM)

Starshine,
We could only wish. I'm not an expert on the topic but I don't believe they do. They talk a lot when campaigning but that's about as far as it goes. We get to see the first ladies visiting pre-schools and such. Don't think it goes much further than that.

I very well could be mistaken though. Am I? Anybody know?

gitta -> RE: Come on Dominas, Doms, subs, slaves etc (8/4/2004 3:54:48 PM)

MsVix,

For my haste in posting an apology, one tends to react more than respond. The post to this one did seem to be insulting, as i happen to be highly educated, and tend to see things with tunnel vision.

smiles,
gitta

sub4hire -> RE: Come on Dominas, Doms, subs, slaves etc (8/4/2004 4:07:27 PM)

I just thought, hey maybe I gave you the wrong impression?
In the US every citizen is given a free education. Free meaning free. The government foots the bill for it. The schools get paid by attendance. So they will actually come after the parents if they don't send little johnny to school.
I know many teachers personally. All are quality individuals. Most complain about the system and the cutbacks.
People look at the US as having money. Partially that is correct. Yet, we still have hillbillies. Living in the woods with no indoor plumbing and no way of making their situation any better in this generation or the next.
We literally spend millions upon billions to get someone elected to office. Yet we turn our back on the one's who need it the most in our own backyards. If you're fighting just to keep food on your table, your first thoughts are'nt going to be getting little johnny to school today.

And what does your spell check say about Y/you, etc? Does it have an option for Gorean third person speech as well?

If we're checking dictionaries for correct word usage, I'd really like to see an accepted dictionary that lists submissive as a noun. A "sub" is a boat that operates underwater or a long sandwich, afaik. Submissive/dominant used as nouns happens to be my personal pet peeve. (They're adjectives - descriptors, not things!)

They concentrated on learning, but not on grammar?

Pot. Kettle. Black.

Feh.
