I'm not going to say the "d" word, lol. I joined the service, got out and went to college.

The only way to get more resources to the school is move the bureaucracy higher up. First we create a state department of education, then a federal one. I got an idea! Let's name an education Czar getting $200,000 a year with a full staff and maybe he can figure out why there is a lack of funding.

Im not sure

Just me, could be wrong.

One of my pet peeves is the use of drugs to "help" children remain in their seats. Labeling them ADHD or ADD. I do agree that parents should be more involved with their childrens education. But I also believe that the teachers should be more interested in presenting the subject in such a way as to hold their attention. The number of teachers that present their subject matter by passing out reams of copied "worksheets", and by putting in a video is rising. No wonder the kids lose interest and the forrests are dwindling.
Before I get hit with a flame, yes, some children need medication, but not to the extent is it used. A child unable to pay attention in class is not always due to a psychological problem. Boredom makes us all restless. Sundew

i do agree on the importance of literacy, grammer, spelling, etc. But, may i ask why is it all that important? Many that come to these forums are not typists, not totally computer literate, and *i feel* that no one should be judged by their online persona...it is not who W/we are in r/t.
Peace,

Actually, most people tell me I'm pretty much the same person in text or in the flesh. When I meet people that I've interacted with online either briefly or over a longer period of time, they pretty much always say something like "you're just the way I imagined you". There's only one me, and it comes through pretty clearly (to many people's chagrin), regardless of the venue.

soule4You -> RE: Come on Dominas, Doms, subs, slaves etc (8/7/2004 9:16:11 PM)

I wish i could say the same...for some reason i come across alot harsher online than offline...not intentionally, i suppose it's the way i write?
Peace

When my son got old enough to start balking at a bed time I made a deal with him: You can stay awake as long as you like as long as you are in bed and reading. I don't care what you are reading (and I meant that...and yes, he tested it) as long as you are reading. He fell asleep with his light on maybe three times. Then the newness wore off, he'd read until he was tired and turn his light out and go to sleep.

LOL! That is exactly how i acquired my first set of glasses in 2nd grade!

Btw, high school dropout here, too. [:)] Though i did 'sell out' to go to college later....

Same here, lol.

On Topic: I have my theories about why there are SO MANY ADD, ADHD, and all the variations thereof, children right now! But that is aside. The fact is, that there are! I've heard that the "Feingold's Diet" is very successful in treating ADD in all of its incarnations. What it does is remove all of the artificial colors, sugars, etc from the child's diet. Noooooo, the child doesn't die. lol

I think education is important. I personally love education. I'm still going to school. I'm just hours away from my Master's in Philosophy. Which I pause periodically because I'm not a finisher, but that's another story. Whether we, the adults, satisfied our academic dreams, or not, we want our children to satisfy our academic dreams for them. If we're not happy with the system that is providing the education, then we're going to have to become part of it, to improve it. It can't be about money. It has to be about doing the best you can with the tools you've got. The knowledge is there. And that is what we're talking about. Passing on knowledge.

SentForu -> RE: Come on Dominas, Doms, subs, slaves etc (8/9/2004 1:01:18 PM)

I'll be the first to admit that I'm not Einstein, but does that mean that my opinion of any matter should be discarded? When in a forum such as this, you're going to run across "mistakes". That's exactly what they are. I'd almost bet you have made a simple mistake a few times in your life. Does that mean the person is incapable of rational judgements? No, what it means is that we are ALL only human. Being perfect isn't even conceivable.

I do agree, that when holding a conversation, it is more attractive if he makes sense. That is a preference for me. I try to see it like this. Not everyone has the same educational background. If you really think about it, some of these older people have a lot more "lived experience" rather than formal education. That makes them have more common sense. If you put a fresh college gratuate and the former in a shoe box sealed with duct tape, which do you think could come out faster?...lol.

The bottom line is, everyone is different. If we were all the same, it would make for a very boring place. I know that some of my posts probably haven't made a lot of sense to everyone here. LOL, I also know that I am the world's worst when it comes to typos and mispellings. However, that does not define who I am inside.

Ya'll take care,
Myra.......(shoot, that southern slang won yet again)

Starting the day with a bowl full of preservatives and sugar surely screws a person up. From the conversations I've had with Americans, the cereal aisles in our supermarkets greatly differ. Australian supermarkets have the healthy majority, and sugary minority, while American supermarkets seem to be the opposite.

Making kids want to learn is the key, I think. Anyone can learn something new, but firing up that hunger to learn in a kid, is really important. After a year in child care, I saw and dealt with many different children on a daily basis, and you could get all of them to enjoy learning if you approached them right.

Ma'am,
i believe that it was Mark Twain who said "I pity the person with so little imagination that they have to spell the same word the same way every time." He seemed like a pretty entertaining guy, and those who read his notes might have considered it irritating, but found it worthwhile once they understood the point he was trying to make.
Just a thought.
