Sanity,

It's a serious situation we're in alright, but it has consistently been made worse by efforts to stir up fear and panic.

A new Gallup analysis of more than 40,000 interviews conducted over the last month and a half shows a strong correlation between trends in voters' candidate preferences in the election and consumer views of the U.S. economy. Barack Obama's margin of support over John McCain has risen proportionately when the percentage of Americans who are negative about the U.S. economy increases. Obama's front-runner margin has fallen when economic negativity decreases. [italics added]

Interesting how views change when people don't feel so desperate for someone to "save" them.

K.

No no no. It's stop taxing the average person, who spent four years in college and is busting her/his ass for what should be a good salary, but in fact translates into nothing more than stretching it from paycheck to paycheck, so that her/his taxes can subsidise the insanely rich. I don't see what's wrong with that :-) .

Or get yourself and your money out of the United States now, while you still can.

Democrat Barney Frank is on Youtube video this morning in a new interview excerpt talking very candidly about the real Democratic agenda - he's saying that a lot more deficit spending is needed, and the Democrats will hike spending tremendously and tax the rich in order to help pay for it.

Higher taxes in a recession...

If you're not wealthy, prepare to suffer because government doesn't provide jobs, only the wealthy do. Even government jobs!

The video

There's a big argument going on about taxes.

Some argue that the wealthy aren't paying enough, some argue that the less wealthy equally aren't paying enough.

The truth is, the wealthy (let's call them the top 10% of tax payers) are paying a vastly greater percentage of the total tax bill than they were in the early 80's (look it up....it's a fact), but the fact that the wealthiest 10% have increased their income (and assets) by 3 to 1 in that same period speaks to a larger issue.

And so...let's talk about taxes;

Should the wealthy pay more (percentage)?

Why?

Should the less wealthy pay more (because they're paying consistently less every year / decade)?

Why?  Why not?

It is a verifiable fact that, as a percentage of income, the wealthiest 10% are paying an historically higher percentage of their income towards taxes than those in the bottom tier.

So why should they pay more?

Or, should they?

(As a side note...I'm one of those who will pay more...and I'm voting for Obama....because we need the money...now more than ever....but the question is still valid..."why"...on either side of the question).

Who's flipping burgers? What on earth are you talking about now? If you have a degree in History or Philosophy, it's likely to be a BA.

Let's all argue this:

1) We have to spend money on some stuff
2) We spend more than we bring in
3) We want to cut revenue to magically solve this
4) With a huge trade deficit
5) With the bulk of our debt financing from abroad
6) While in a still largely frozen credit market

Well sure! Should work great!

The same place you got your data also points out that half of American taxpayers make less than $34,000 a year.  I am not real sure how you can pay rent/mortgage,car payment, car insurance, gasoline at 5/4 dollars a gallon, buy food and also pay @20% of that $34,000 in state and federal income tax.
The famous bank robber Willie Sutton is reputed to have said when asked why he robbed banks..."That's where the money is"...
Why tax the rich..."That's where the money is"...The rich get the most benifit from living in this country why should they not pay comensurately?

The rich own 50 % of the wealth in the US,they should pay 50% of the tax burden.

The top 5% own 50 % of the wealth, they didn`t get that wealth in a vacuum.

They got it from doing business here,in our towns and cities,on our roads, under the protection of our police/courts,and from the people who live here and built and maintain this nation.

For the privelage of becoming wealthy, you must pay the costs and not shift those costs to the middle class.

I still can`t understand why middle class folks actually want to shift more of the tax burden on themselves and onto  the rest of us.

A degree in history or philosophy would be a BA or an MA which are degrees in the Arts.
A degree in chemistry or physics would be a BS or an MS which are degrees in the Sciences.

Interesting, too, that when looking for someone to save them, they turn to Obama as opposed to McCain. To me, that speaks directly to the distrust that average folks have of our current adminstration and McCain is the one paying the tab.

(Actually, they own 85% of the wealth).

They got it from doing business here,in our towns and cities,on our roads (which they invested in...others didn't),under the protection of our police/courts (which they paid for...along with everyone else),and from the people who live here and built and maintain this nation.

For the privilege of becoming wealthy (it's hard work),you must pay the costs (which they did....times 12) and not shift those costs to the middle class (which they didn't).

I still can`t understand why middle class folks actually want to shift more of the tax burden on themselves and onto  the rest of us.

Obama is on record saying he's convinced that the race will tighten up... so in other words his internal polling must be telling him that it's a statistical dead heat. So if your little pet theory is valid and Obama is really running against George Bush, what does that say about Barack Obama since he's practically even with "George Bush" and he may well lose.

Shouldn't he be doing a little better than that?

Is there no point at which their tax burden becomes too much to force "the rich" to bear?

You seem to act as if you don't believe there is.

Sorry, Sanity. That's off topic and I don't want to get mod spanked. Feel free to start a new topic on the subject and maybe I'll join in.

Let me see if I'm following along....Obama on record saying race will tighten up.Sanity translates that to : race is a dead heat statistically speaking...Obama is running against George Bush(which one ,father or son?).
Does that about cover this last post?

His comment makes zero sense at all. History and Philosophy are two degrees I imagine as not really being in high demand.

Are you suggesting that people like Socrates,Plato,Turner and Bancroft should have gotten real jobs like Ken lay and Dubya?
Which of the above named people has had the more positive and lasting effect on mankind.

I'm stating that his comment made zero sense. In today's world how many professional philosophers do you see? Or historians do you run across? An engineer or nurse or doctor makes more sense than those degrees. Personally, I could care less about philosophy, I realize that it is supposedly the foundation of western thought, but its not real high on my agenda of things to worry about. Paying taxes is.
