A few quick comments:

1 - When people whine about taxes, I usually ask them to consider what their net return would be else where.  All that matters to me is my after-tax profit.  If I feel I can get a better deal somewhere else, I will leave.  I'm still here, for now.

2 - Before we deal with raising taxes, how about we talk about spending?  Our government currently primarily appears to borrow to waste money; oddly, neither major political party seems to be pointing this out avidly.  I wonder why...

3 - Plato should be on the side of the list with Ken Lay.

Personally, I could care less about philosophy, I realize that it is supposedly the foundation of western thought, but its not real high on my agenda of things to worry about. Paying taxes is.

So you are saying that even though they are the foundation of western society they are not all that important in the total scheme of things.  By analogy then the color of paint on a building is much more important than the foundation it is built on.
Many would call that short sighted.
In my opinion you have exactly the government that that sort of thinking generates.

I said; Personally, I could care less about philosophy, I realize that it is supposedly the foundation of western thought, but its not real high on my agenda of things to worry about.
So to me, personally, which you may want to get a dictionary out and look up what that word means, I could care less about them. I don't sit there at night and ponder plato or aristotle, and that doesn't make me a poor citizen. I do however ponder the reason why you chose to make something from nothing. Plus your analogy is pointless, my opinion is that, mine. I happen to believe the foundation of this country is the Constitution, not 3000 year old greeks or renissance italians. But hey, what do I know right? I am just an ignorant joe.

hey trouble,

before even one more penny is paid per the tax system, a complete audit needs to occur.  the 2.3 trill "missing" needs accounted for.  and every expense need to be cut to the bone and by people I see in the grocery store, not officials.  REAL PEOPLE.

If everyone withheld payment to the IRS pending a serious pare to the bone... it would happen.  But then too- if people en mass cancelled cable- TV would get better. I am doing fine with no TV. I thought by now I would re-order it.

Because his political philosophy is totally incoherent, disconnected from inherent human nature, and undirected.  It leads to trouble, in short, that makes Enron pale in comparison.

Who was the last major European world leader to seriously style himself as a philosopher king?

Well, you know they've definitely got the means. Now all they need is for a big-time socialist like Obama to give them a reason...

Yea BIG TIME SOCIALIST.  Like Marx, Lenin, Mao.  I can barely tell his tax plan apart from the communist manifesto - they're almost word for word identical.  Believe me America, you let Obama in and the next thing you know we'll be wearing black communist outfits and smoking Cuban cigars.  This is not fear mongering or any kind of inexcusable politico baiting, this is very, very serious.  Hide your children (he'll just put kercheifs on them and make them sing nationalistic tunes).

Who's flipping burgers? What on earth are you talking about now? If you have a degree in History or Philosophy, it's likely to be a BA.

Doh!

The same place you got your data also points out that half of American taxpayers make less than $34,000 a year.  I am not real sure how you can pay rent/mortgage,car payment, car insurance, gasoline at 5/4 dollars a gallon, buy food and also pay @20% of that $34,000 in state and federal income tax.
The famous bank robber Willie Sutton is reputed to have said when asked why he robbed banks..."That's where the money is"...
Why tax the rich..."That's where the money is"...The rich get the most benifit from living in this country why should they not pay comensurately?

Awsome!
My neighbors are rich Im gonna go grab a tommy gun and rob them cuz they are rich and all.

On a serious note here.  Where do you propose we all go?
