Don't count me among the crowd who sees political contributions as "free speech."

Sorry for the interruption, but just FYI, all---

Statistically, about ten percent of us are color blind, so no, we don't notice the color--nor do we notice links buried in sentences.

Just saying. Back to the topic.
Then I'm sure you, and your ditto-head appreciated me pointing it out to you; you're welcome! However can't help you from being unable to follow any thread reference. Wonder why you didn't note it earlier in any of the other various threads where similiar links are posted so everyone could know and send you your own special link.

wow!

$400,000+ on food for the campaign (lots of cavier!)

$21million on polls!

ohmygawd!!!!

The caviar story was a b-s story, bon appetit.

This(the huge amount of $) may well be a result of George Bush.

It`s been a two year long campaign(if ya`ll recall).

Both parties started early and loudly because of a hunger for a new guy in office. And who can blame them/us?

According to the Federal Election Commission, $1,514,400,000 has been contributed/donated collectively to Republicrats.
Federal Election Commission

why do they need so much money?

To put on a dog and pony show to indoctrinate the masses into thinking that voting for the lesser of two evils is the patriotic and smart thing to do.

There goes the left again....If they limited the amount that each candidate could spend Obama would loose.  He is trying his best to buy this election.

Was this a problem for you before this election? Because for many election cycles it has been the republicans that outspent democrats. Now I want public financing and the fairness doctrine back again... I am also a dreamer that wants viable third parties.

I do wonder what this again business is in your post, because like I said, it is the first in a long while that democrats competed with republicans in raising money.

Well, obviously, if Dems are collecting more money than Repubs, it means that A) Somehow, the Dems are breaking the law that Repubs will always get more money, and B) Individual contributions aren't as "Free-speechful" as corporate republican contributions.  I didn't hear the Repubs whinging in 2000 or 2004 about how much more money they were getting than the Dems. They were clapping their hands in glee.  Now that the tables are turned, "Whaaaaa! Whaaaaa! Not Fairrrrrr!" To which I say, "suck it up, put on your big girl knickers, and get over it."

One really good thing about this is that, after Obama gains the White House, the DNC will have TONS of money to go after Republican voter fraud. REAL fraud, not that goofy made-up ACORN nonsense.

Let's not forget the $800K to ACORN although that apparently isn't as newsworthy as Sarah Palin's wardrobe. Evidently it is much more costly to register fake voters than real live voters. Dems want to make sure every vote is counted while the Repubs want to see every voted counted accurately. We saw this in play in Florida in 2000.

Why do people give it?

thank you, that's another excellent question...indeed, why do they?

They don't need it but this is capitalism and we get the best govt. the capitalist can afford.

The fact is they get so much for two reasons...

1) The internet has allowed people to be lazy and still contribute and that's how Obama for example raised $150 mill. in Sept. alone.

2) The capitalists is now a 'free-speechists' in that all of that capital we are told...IS free speech in the bank and thus they feel free now to try to BUY the candidate.

Yes. It's government by the financially successful. Why reward failure to accumulate hard cash? And all's for the best in the best of all capitalistic worlds  .

thank you.  this slave doesn't believe swindlers/thieves/con men/women should be rewarded for accumulating hard cash.  neither Republicrat has earned the contributions to their collective campaign.

You could argue that the money is collectively owned, and not in the hand of one individual. Also, it takes much stamina to collect campaign funds. It's a skill to persuade donors to partake with their money... and whether candidates are swindlers or not remains to be proven.

I agree on one point: it's that the amount of money spent on these campaigns is ridiculous. But until the electorate stops lapping it up, what can you do to stop it? Pass a law that prevents political parties from collecting public donations?

thank you.  yes, the way things are handled should change.  once upon a time, political parties did not gather together for a big convention and choose/vote for a candidate, however, a third party, which never was able to put a candidate in the white house, effectively changed the way political parties select their candidates by simply having a state convention for their political party.  no law was necessary to force the other parties to adopt the policy...they just did it, and that is now the way it is done.
the Republicrat campaign has espoused "change" by both of it's candidates...they have yet to do anything that resembles change.

I think, come 2012, the republicans will start to catch up when it comes to this "series of tubes" known as the internet. Perhaps by then, they will be able to accept $5, $10 and $50 dollar donations from their base as well. At that point, it may become a whole other ballgame... the amount of money being raised very probably WILL be considered a type of poll/indicator for how well a candidate is doing with the electorate.

Literally, it could become a case of "putting our money where our mouth is."
