BitaTruble -> Combat Brigade ready on US soil.. WTF?? (10/23/2008 6:49:10 PM)

Isn't this the job of the National Guard? We take the guys that are supposed to be doing this and send them to Iraq .. and the guys that are trained to go to Iraq are here on our soil?

Welcome to the Patriot Act in action.

A little fear-mongering going on here? These are not troops trained for domestic deployment as a combat unit or as a back-up for law enforcement. Exceprts from the article explain [my italics]...

Despite conspiracy theories that this could be a first step toward martial law in the U.S., there won't be tanks on Main Street or active-duty troops putting down demonstrations. That is barred by federal law banning the military from being used on U.S. soil for domestic law enforcement.

Instead, the Soldiers of the 1st Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division at Fort Stewart, Ga., have been training to back up civilian authorities in providing medical care and dealing with chemical, biologic, high explosive or nuclear attack.

Northern Command has previously relied on National Guard troops, which, by the way, aren't trained to knit sweaters you know, but...

"We haven't had a force for more than a two-week period that has been dedicated," said Lt. Col. Rob Cunniff, who works in the future operations planning division of the command's Colorado Springs headquarters... with the new unit, commanders know they have forces that are properly trained for the challenges of disaster relief.

Cloutier said his Soldiers are learning how to clear roads blocked by debris and how to uses the Jaws of Life to free trapped victims. Other tasks the Soldiers have practiced include getting relief supplies to victims and setting up medical care facilities.

I like conspiracy theories as much as the next guy, but let's not get hysterical over being better prepared for a major national disaster.

What has been made available for use in the US is civil operations brigade, which technically IS a combat unit, however the operational scope is limited to fire, medical, hazmat response.

When you consider the average brigade strength, usually 2 to five regiments, or about 4000 men, it is highly probable that the unit will have to dig into reserve and guard forces to make up the compliment.

As for sending the people that should be doing this to Iraq, may I once again remind everyone that prior to the Iraqi invasion, President Bush was told by top ranking pentagon staff involved in the planning of the operation that the US did not have enough troops to take and pacify the country, EVEN with help from other countries.

At the highest strength, the US had 543482 troops in Vietnam in 1969.  The highest number of American troops in Iraq has been around 150000.

The total area in Iraq to be controlled is 169,234 square miles.

The total land area in SOUTH Vietnam was around 60,000 square miles.

The breaks down to about 9 american troops per square mile, HOWEVER, to that number you have to add, 12 more troops from south vietnam, south korea, New Zealand, the Philippines and Australia.

In other words, at the highest troop strength in the Vietnam war, it stood at 1,263,418 troops, while the total communist forces remained BELOW 600000!

Now, would someone care to explain why some bunch of idiots think they can pacify a land area twice the size of the last major long term war with less than half the troops?

It would appear that the troops presently deployed in Iraq would fall under the classification of "cannon fodder."

Cannon fodder is the term for a whole bunch of personnel that you stick in harms way and decide they are expendable... because you cant think of a better plan to get what needs to be done done.

Welcome to the United States of 2008, and the new population control program referred to blood and stupidity, our troops blood, Bush's stupidity.

You don't have to be a conspiracy type to feel less than assured by this statement, as we all know laws are easily cast aside when that is considered to be of benefit by those doing the casting.

But, what does that have to do with this brigade?

There are military bases all over the United States, along with troops that have not been trained for civilian assistance, and war-fighting equipment that was not designed for civilian rescue operations. For people seriously concerned about the military being mis-used, this Northern Command brigade should be the last thing on their mind.

There's been rumours for years the little W wouldn't go willingly.

Celeste, thanks for posting the linke to the article.

jlf, that is one of the most logical and coherent explanations about the lack of sufficient resources in this war that I have seen.

I would really like to clarify something which I find a little annoying in this thread.  We are not here to suppress your rights as a citizen, we are here to protect you and give you aid.  I say 'we,' because I am a veteran and actually went down to New Orleans after hurricane Katrina to assist the local authorities and aid in Search and Rescue.  At any given moment you have what's called QRF (Quick Reaction/Response Forces), that's all this Brigade is.  The 82nd Airborne out of Ft. Bragg is one such unit.

I'm pretty sure that there are only a few specialties that deal with Combat...and those are Infantry, Field Artillery, Special Forces...etc.  The rest are jobs like medicine, mechanic, HVAC repair, and electronics.  If there's a hurricane, who do you think is going to be sent in...Field Artillery?  Get a grip...

I don't think it is you that is the problem.

It is the commander-in-chief.

And how would you try to explain armor units being moved into a city or natural disaster area?  Even all the wool in the world wouldn't be able to cover all the eyes of the people in the United States.  Simply put...it's not going to happen...

Wow, how interesting. Help me with this though, if all of that is true, why is it we're winning to the point that 66 percent of what our military used to do is now handed over to iraqi troops ?

Please, you're spewing your party's propaganda from a year ago, your party leaders know the war is won which is why you hardly hear anything about iraqi now. Please try to keep up.

popeye1250 -> RE: Combat Brigade ready on US soil.. WTF?? (10/23/2008 9:44:15 PM)

Four thousand Troops all in uniform wouldn't be much of a match for four thousand heavily armed civilians *not* in uniform now would they?
I could pop off 4 or 5 of them from a distance before they even knew they were taking fire.
Then 4 or 5 the next day, or week or month.
Much ado about nothing.

Like invading Iraq because Saddam is making nukes?

Or Abu Ghraib was just a bunch of green kids who got a little carried away?

With the right lie you can get just about anything you want when you are PotUS.

shatteredplaster -> RE: Combat Brigade ready on US soil.. WTF?? (10/23/2008 9:54:13 PM)

...this doesn't even warrant a response.

The fact of the matter is, the only thing this article did was shed light on something that has already been happening for years.  This isn't new.  And as much as some people would like to believe in outrageous conspiracies, these units are in place to extend help quickly and efficiently wherever...whenever.

First of all, I'd like to say thank you for your service to this country. I have a great deal of respect for our service personnel and the risk you've taken and your pledge to defend and protect this country from all enemies foreign and domestic. I'm just not sure what Bush thinks a domestic enemy is anymore. That's what scares me. It's that whole 'you're either with us or against us' mentality and the signatories on the Patriot act, which have absolutely suppressed my rights as a citizen. One only needs to read it to know it. See, I'm against Bush, I think he's a criminal and a traitor ... that makes me his enemy. Since he said he would chase his enemies to hell and back, I think being a bit paranoid will suit me better than burying my head in the sand and pretending there's a guy in office right now who hasn't been drunk with power for the last 7 years.

So, forgive me if I don't feel protected. I feel betrayed. I have neither trust nor faith in the current administration and I can't wait until Jan 20, 2009 when, hopefully, the reigns will be handed over to someone else.

corysub -> RE: Combat Brigade ready on US soil.. WTF?? (10/23/2008 11:28:51 PM)

Damn...I have never heard such stupidity....A brigade of U.S. troops is being trained to assist authorities in the event some event requires some emergency assistance, and people actually have made comments ranging from "a few thousand in military uniforms are no match for civilians.."I could pop off four or five"....to the beginning of "Martial Law" in the country..to "concerns" that Bush will not leave office....!!  Please tell me that what I am reading is really a "casting call" for SNL writers...  It would all make much more sense if these were not political fears but your every day liberal attempt at comedy attacking the U.S.
On the other hand, suppose these comments were being made in earnest physchopathic paranoia about the state of our country today....nah...people could not be going through life beleiving this sort of dribble....could they?  I have to check if Bill Ayers has a website.  Sounds like rantings from the 1960's when the Weathermen were starting their revolution against the U.S.  Thankfully, a few of them blew themselves up in Manhattan before they could do more damage than they had already done.
