Sanity we have had progressive income tax in this country since we have had an income tax....promising to roll back Bush's ill advised tax cuts hardly qualifies as a new or a unique plan to "redistribute" wealth. But Nothing I say will seep in with you, your hatred of Obama is a visceral type...your tax argument merely the window dressing.

puella -> RE: Joe The Plumber Thread (10/31/2008 7:31:30 PM)

One of the saddest parts of this whole election, in my opinion, is what has happened to our religious 'compass' in this country.  At one point we were the beacon of religious freedom... now we are graded on how patriotic and 'real American' we are by what faith we subscribe to... and god help you if you do not believe in god...

Faith is not a ranking system.  The very foundation of this country was supposed to have been based upon that premise.

Libby Dole, Sarah Palin, John McCain and all the others who invoke the name of a God, their God, to prove their Americanness are doing this country an immense disservice.

Any  and every public official needs to understand that whatever your personal faith, you SERVE the people,  your constituents, be they Muslim, Christian, Wiccan, or godless.

If you can not comprehend that idea... than you can not comprehend what it truly is to be American.

now Dave,

Obama's & Rev. Wright's church practices:
Black Theology
Liberation theology as it has expressed itself in the African-American community seeks to find a way to make the gospel relevant to black people who must struggle daily under the burden of white oppression. The question that confronts these black theologians is not one that is easily answered. "What if anything does the Christian gospel have to say to powerless black men," to use James Cone's words, whose existence is "threatened on a daily basis by the insidious tentacles of white power?" If the gospel has nothing to say to people as they confront the daily realities of life, it is a lifeless message. If Christianity is not real for blacks, then they will reject it.

Yeah, I know... I've heard it all before. If I disagree with Barack Obama's radical brand of Socialism I'm "hateful" towards Obama, even if all I'm discussing are taxes.

Nice.

One more time though.. it's not a "progressive tax" in any way, shape or form when most people are getting money out instead of paying in, and the only people paying in are those who stand accused of acquiring wealth. That's Marxism, pure and simple.

Tax cuts McCain called "fiscally irresponsible," by the way, until he ran for office and now is for making them permanent.

It's not a flip-flop, though, when a Republican does it. And I'm sure he wouldn't lie just to win an election...

they all lie!  Obama lied about public funds, didn't he?

bestbabync:
I'm not arguing that the candidates need to be asked hard questions.  Like I said, it should be The Inquisition and they should be required to answer fully - no ducking and weaving.

I think the real problem with Joe was that he didn't even bother to look at either candidates' own information on the subject.  He just went right out there and shot his mouth off.  Turns out he hasn't got a hope in hell of buying that business, and not because of anything either candidate might do if elected.  But that's neither here nor there.  As I mentioned in another thread, tax brackets all stop and end somewhere.  So if the bracket Joe wants to be in has an upper limit of $250k and he thinks the business he wants to buy is worth $275k, looks like Joe gets to be in a higher tax bracket.  But, as also stated repeatedly, a business worth $275k won't pay taxes on that amount.  That's only the overall value on the company.  Taxes get applied to what's left after all the expenses are paid, not before.  Like any smart businessman, Joe would hire a CPA to do his taxes.  And Joe would learn one of the perks of owning a business: deductions!  Various ppl who care more than I have calculatd that Joe would do much better financially under Senator Obama's plan than he would under Senator McCain's plan.

You are absolutely right: not asking enough questions AND demading real answers gets us into so many messes.  The answer, however, is not simply more questions.  The answer is in asking the right questions.

There's a saying that you should never ask a question you don't already know the answer to.  Good advice.

~Dave

Have it your way sanity....though you might have some difficulty's getting your labels of Obama to jive with Webster's Dictionary's definition of "progressive" and Socialism...good luck with that....By the way a graduated tax is what if not progressive?Don't bother answering that I have been reading the same post's from you for the last 2 months....I grow tired of this, thank god the election is tuesday.

Again, it's not graduated, it's not progressive - people are getting handouts.

It's welfare.

bestbabync -> RE: Joe The Plumber Thread (10/31/2008 7:48:06 PM)

Joe has a right to the american dream, no matter what, so i disagree with you there.  there are alot of millionaires that have been down on their luck, look at Warren Buffet, didn't he file bankruptcy at some point?

Joe did not shoot his mouth off, he simply asked a question.  Joe was one of those undecided voters and he had every right to ask the question, no matter how stupid some think his question was.   i had a 5th grade teacher that used to tell me questions are good, others may have the same stupid question, so ask it.

Sanity -> RE: Joe The Plumber Thread (10/31/2008 8:10:11 PM)

Progressive taxes are taxes levied on all the people, with the wealthier paying more in order to pay for essential government services, not to buy crack cocaine for the crazy neighbors, or beer for the bum on the corner.

When you have a politician going around promising 95% of the people money, checks mailed from the treasury, if they elect him, that's not "progressive taxes."

That's robbing Peter to elect Barack. Why do you even support that, with the deficit the way that it is... we need to pay our bills, not bribe the electorate. If politicians successfully start playing this little game they'll only try to out-promise one another.

"Oh yeah? Well, MY tax plan gives you DOUBLE what his does, PLUS free medical, PLUS free housing, PLUS free food, PLUS free gasoline."

Your post speaks volumes about you.Your line about crack cocaine for the crazy neighbors, beer for the bum on the corner says it all doesn't it.Desperation is very unseemly Sanity especially when combined with bias and hate.

Sanity -> RE: Joe The Plumber Thread (10/31/2008 8:18:44 PM)

Those very people will get checks from "the rich" courtesy of the strong arm of the Federal Government and Barack Obama if he is elected, and it's no exaggeration. He promises 95% of the people will get tax cuts. How does that work exactly when only a little over fifty percent of us pay taxes, without buying homeless people beer and crack addicts their next fix.

Explain that to me.

And where is the hate? It seems that Barack Obama is the one filled with hate, feeding people's addictions and enabling their failure while punishing success, and destroying the economy in the process.

There's your hate, right there.
