Whenever I hear comments about Obama’s half white/half black being a reason for whatever… it brings to mind this Star Treck episode (circa 1969).  When are we going STOP..? or are we going to end up like these two.  If you don’t have the patience to watch the whole episode... advance to the 45 minute mark and watch the last 10 minutes.

Status: offline 		Don't need to go back and watch it,I grew up with StarTrek and can hardly forget any of the what were there 39 episodes.....relax on Tuesday this country will elect the best candidate for the job.The act that he happens to be half black/ half white is simply coincidence...ain't that grand!!!!

Isn't it amazing how all the episodes stick in our minds as if it were yesterday?  And yes, grand it is!

Interesting.  I've never heard anything about him being bi-racial as being a reason for anything.  Being bi-racial is just another day in my world.  My kids are bi-racial as my ex-husband is Asian and I'm white.  Several of my nieces and nephews are bi-racial... some half white, half black... and others are half white and half hispanic. 

I've heard people on tv getting their panties in a bunch because he's "black," but not a thing about him being bi-racial.  I guess race doesn't mean all that much to me.  I was married to a "brown" man for 13 years, and have been dating a "black" guy for more than 5.

I don't pretend to be colorblind because I like color contrasts and cultural contrasts, and bi-racial kids are quite lovely.  The whole race thing tends to make me roll my eyes at how petty people can be.

Just keep your ears open.. you'll hear it,..  Especially when someone doesn't agree with him.. "It's because/must be/of course because he's half (fill in the oppose race the comentor is)".

Status: offline 		i am bi-racial.  i know others that are just like Obama and myself. 

alot of us especially growing up in the 60's & 70's have identity problems.  after reading some of Obama's history and his own writings i believe he may have had to overcome some of the same obstacles due to his mixed race.  i am only one year older than Obama, so i understand some of the things he has written about.  being bi-racial back then was not as accepted as today.  it was like being a square peg trying to fit in a round hole.  no matter which side of the family i was visiting, there was something missing or too much of something. 

even though i have that in common with Obama, i do not agree with his politics so i did not vote for him.  bi-racial, all white or all black matters not to me of course.  but it does matter to many i am sorry to say.

Status: offline 		Lotus, I must say that I am not pleased that you started this thread, but I appreciate that reminder about that episode. I remember it, Beela or something like that was an establishment type and was hunting Loki. His kind, well when Beela was confronted with "You look the same to me" he pointed out that Loki was black on the (left/right) side while he was black on the (right/left) side. Don't remember which. I do, however remember that when they got back to their planet, Sharan, everyone else had killed each other. They were the only two left and then killed each other. So I need no clip.

Actually the only reason that I am not pleased here is because I was about to start a Star Trek thread. I won't let it bother me, because taking the wind out of my sails so to speak will give me more time to think. Of course that might result in a longer OP, at which time you might want to kick yourself. Sorry.

Thing is, Rodenberry had a way of projecting people's traits in general to other, though fictional, species'. Many of the plots of the original series brought up moral issues. In fact this brings up a tertiary point now.

A Black comedian had a joke about Star Trek, he said "If you were Black, and on that show for the first time, you are sure to get your ass killed", and it was true. Whatever Rodenberry's attitude, the casting crew either wanted to evoke sympathy or something like that, or they did not want Blacks on the show. You be the judge, I didn't make those decisions I just watched it.

And when does it end ? NEVER. Color of skin is a matter of looks mainly, but what happens if you look at someone who is ugly or something ? Or overweight, obese in fact. Or hideously deformed. There is no stopping those types of human reactions, all we can do is think past them and use our will of logic. Logic dictates that we know ourselves, and use that knowledge for the betterment of at least ourselves. If not, we might end up just like the planet Sharan.

Interesting question, when are people going to stop looking at hair color, body features, eye color, gender, and such.  My guess is when everyone becomes blind, or some time after they pass away.
