So what are the top 2 things you would concentrate on fixing if you were elected President? How would you go about these things?

1) Returning manufacturing to the US - Offer tax incentives to companies that 100% of their products are US made and assembled. If that was not enough, shift the subsidizes from the Oil Industry to this.

2) Set a deadline for pulling troops out of Iraq and reposition needed assets to Afghanistan - define the actual goal and steps to get there. Set deadlines for these and hold any and all brass responsible for getting it done.

If I were President,

1.   I would recall all of our troops from Europe, Korea, and Japan.  These countries can take care of themselves, people there don't like the U.S. anyway, so why should we contribute our military strength and dollars to their economies.  We could station these troops along our southern borders in newly estabilish Forts.  We would save on the expense, logistices and,at the same time, protect our borders as every country has a right to do.

2.   I would establish a strong energy policy with emphasis on the U.S. strength and abundance of coal, oil, and shale.   Investment should be made in wind and solar to bring the costs down to levels that homeowners could reasonably be expected to utilize these alternative sources in time.  Nuclear would be at the top of my list of facilities to be opened..it's clean...its a technology that is proven, and in time, would free us from the bondage of the Middle East.

1) Healthcare

2) Restoring our world standing.  (This topic includes the handling of the fight against extremism, world monetary aid -without prejudice against family planning, diplomacy based on rational thought - not fear and hate, and behaving in an economically responsible way).

"Well, now if I were the president of this land
You know, I'd declare total war on The Pusher man
I'd cut him if he stands, and I'd shoot him if he'd run
Yes I'd kill him with my Bible and my razor and my gun."

When I saw the title of the thread, this freaking song popped in my head.  I couldn't resist.

I would push for a $10 tax on every gallon of gas for NON-COMMERCIAL use.

1) I would then give $5 of it as a gift/hand-out to the oil companies as 'shut the hell up' money for step two of my plan.
2) I would give the other $5 of that tax directly into renewable energy sources such as solar, hydro-electric and geo-thermal (as a few examples) to make them more viable and to create the infrastructure for them.
3) I would call all of our troops home and tell the rest of the world to EAT THEIR OIL!

Now, I know the tax would be harsh at first, but the benfit is worth it.  Heck, even the side-effect benefits would be helpful.  For years we have been saying that people should conserve, drive less, and create more public transportaion.  But we won't
In the 70's we appealed to people's understanding of the time limit on fossil fuels - and people did not conserve.
In the 80's we appealed to the increasing volume of traffic and tried to get people to drive less with HOV lanes - and people refused to use them.
In the 90's we appealed to people's understanding of pollution, global warming, greenhouse gasses, etc.  The effect on our driving level was nothing.

The only thing that people respond to is higher prices - profoundly higher price, and I would rather NOT see it all be price gouging and profit for the oil companies, but rather something that would work us to getting off of oil altogether.

Plus, it would be very satisfying to me to be able to tell the rest of the world to EAT THEIR FUCKING OIL!

Issue a massive incentive to rebuild American infrastructure, industry and innovation. Any company outsourcing any portion of the work loses incentive and gets a resulting tax penalty. Sort of crash re-industrialization of American, a huge national project that touches all of our lives, whether through better highways, safer water and cleaner air, the chance to get that machinist job back that was outsourced, or the opportunity to help digitize huge collections of books and documents for 21st century libraries. Become a true leader in the world again, a place known for its innovation and work ethic of its citizenry.

Get tough on crime. No more hilton for cons, commit a crime you pay your dues by hard labor. Making furniture for government offices, cleaning highway sides, etc. Rehab. Education. A bootcamp enviroment, out of bed early and in bed late. No time to make trouble. Also, execution of the most vile criminals in our system, murders, child molesters, rapists, drug lords, gang leaders. one appeal, then its done and a date set.

thats what I would do.

Getting a solid infrastructure has always seemed important to me as well. We cannot just up and raise taxes on petrol 10 per gallon without also having other alternatives. Suburbs have little or no public transportation and workers need to get to jobs. The massive amount of work required would in turn create jobs.

Then my head spins with thoughts of the Real ID Act, health care, education, retaining rights over our own bodies and that idiotic War On Drugs. After those my eyes turn past our borders to the world, which yes, I do think we hold responsibility toward. Not because we are the USA but because when it comes down to it we all share a small planet as the human custodians.

The list for me is very long and I'm glad that I don't actually have to prioritize things, not every thing that needs to be done can be done.

1) Get a blowjob from a hot intern.
2) Start pushing for a term limit for congress and SCOTUS justices.
3) Institute a program by which illegals can serve this country in a military or community service organization and earn their citizenship.
4) Refuse to sign any legislation that discriminates against one segment of the population based on religion, sexual preference or ethnic background.
5) Place troops along the southern border to stop the invasion of this country.
6) Give huge tax breaks to companies with 95% jobs in this country.  Fight to pull us out of all of the AFTAs.
7) Take governmental control over ports of entry to this country if no American company will do it.  No foreign power should ever have control to a port of entry in the US.
8) Have hot sex with several smokin hot interns and then not deny it.

Oh, I know its overly simplistic and bordering on the Machiavellian ... But any other attempts to encourage the creation of that sort of infrastructure have failed miserably because we are only motivated by the dollar.

Now, if we have a tax like that in place - private shuttle entities would spring up practically overnight giving enterprising individuals new careers in driving, dispatching, maintainence, support, etc.  Shortly thereafter, the local governments would cath up with their own public transportation projects and companies would be doing more in the area of work-at-home production etc.

and with a little luck, we could replace it with renewable fuel-source transportation modes that would cost significantly less.  We are already so close even in the face of severe intentional set backs from the oil industry - imagine what could be done with an intensive increase in funding and government incentives?  That would create a leading-edge technology industry overnight as well.

This would help with rexrgisformidoni's goals as well.

Rex you live in Arkansas, take a tour of Tucker sometime.  It ain't no Hilton I assure you, and the inmates do everything you're talking about.  My little brother spent a year and a half in there.  You won't find any "Hilton" prisons in most of the U.S.  All of them are bad places to be.

First time I came here I was in batesville and saw a chaingang cleaning the side of the road. But alot of prisons are pretty much grad schools of crime, never seen Tucker, and I know alot of prisons are hell holes. Just seems they should have something to do besides lift weights and watch cable. Its a complicated problem, but one I belive can be fixed and can benifit not only general society, but the inmates to reintegrate back into the civilian world.

IrishKnight, I like your idea for illeigal immigrants, I bet the lines to sign up would be huge. maybe we need a new "ellis island" on the southern border or something, and a place for immigrants to get their work/military assignments. thats an amensty plan I can get behind.
and no legislation should benifit or pander to any one segment of society, it violates the very premise of the promise of our nation.
FTA's should be scrapped entirely and tarrifs put in place on countries attempting to subvert our saftey laws, laws of worker rights, and just general dumping of cheap goods. No imported foods, we used to be able to grow enough, we still can.
No exporting of scrap steel, aluminum, copper or any other useful metal or material. Ships owned by American Firms must be scrapped here and same for aircraft.

I think I should run for president in 2012. Whats a good wholesome American, uniting name for a new party?

1. cancel every program in the government that didn't directly involve national security, interstate commerce, and direct communication with foreign nations.

2. Slash the remaining budgets in half.

  1. Reduce government spending until the deficit was eradicated.  Veto every appropriations bill until a balanced budget was put on my desk.  Shut the government down indefinitely if necessary.
  2. Eliminate health insurance entirely, or, failing that, transfer the tax deductibility of health insurance from employers to individuals.  Establish liberal tax incentives for Health Savings Accounts.  If we must have health insurance, enact regulations requiring every insurance plan to fully cover preventative care (annual physicals, et cetera), and use the bully pulpit of the Presidency to encourage everyone to take maximum advantage of that benefit.
