1) Push for a joint military task force of ARAB nations to take over peace keeping and pacification duties in Iraq, with a hand over time table of 8 months.

2) Stop all subsidizing of the railroad industry and turn the money over to the Army Corps of Engineers, since they inspect the countries infrastructure.
The would then be responsible for all upkeep of the trackage and US highway repair in the US.

3) Tax all domestic and foreign auto manufacturers at 2% of annual income until such time they introduce viable, renewable energy vehicles on the market, and at prices that anyone can afford.

4)  Institute national health coverage for all americans.

5)  Offer tax breaks to all firms bringing jobs back to the states, and stiff taxes on those firms who maintain foreign jobs at more than fifty percent of domestic production.

6) Dissolve unnecessary government agencies and take the unused funds to support other necessary programs, i.e health, education, and social welfare, i.e social security.

7)  Merge all government agencies dealing with sciences under one agency, restructure the agency so it not only controls grants, but also handles hands on research, as well as advanced education in all fields.

8)  Restructure NASA to allow for private funding to sponsor various projects, thus taking the full cost from the Federal Government.

9)  Make the standard for capital punishment harder to apply, to be used only in cases of video evidence, conclusive DNA evidence, and finally requiring a Greek Quorum  of 100 citizens appointed by a federal judge to determine if the punishment should be death, and to do so would require a 2/3's vote in favor.

10)  Get a law passed allowing for corporal punishment to be administered to Federal Employees in all agencies.

11) Hire Doms/Dommes to run all federal agencies.

Rex you live in Arkansas, take a tour of Tucker sometime.  It ain't no Hilton I assure you, and the inmates do everything you're talking about.  My little brother spent a year and a half in there.  You won't find any "Hilton" prisons in most of the U.S.  All of them are bad places to be.

So true except for those who steal huge amounts.  My ex-husband was a drug addict who has spent most of his teen and adult years in and out (mostly in) various jails and prisons.  I guarantee you that not one of them was a "Hilton" or any kind of similar country-club environment.  There are men who have stolen hundreds, perhaps thousands, times the money he has and - if they ever spent a day inside - did it in an environment of near luxury with lots of freedoms.  The "average" criminal in this country does not have a holiday inside, no matter how hard we try to convince ourselves it's not that bad.  I'm not saying it shouldn't be "bad," just saying it's ludicrous to think they're living it up.  Knock over a couple liquor stores and do forty years of hard time.  Pull a stunt similar to what the Enron pricks did and skip away happily.  It's disgusting.  If anyone lives it up in lieu of punishment, it's those assholes...............luci

1. balance the budget overnight by putting people who know how to cut corners in charge of going over the books, the seniors and disabled folks living on fixed incomes.  you'd never see a $500 hammer ever again.  give tax incentives to private industries that supply the federal government with business equipment and other necessary items.  not only will it cut costs, but create jobs.
2. increase taxes on businesses who outsource by 100%.  you want cheap labor?  fine, but it's going to cost you.  use the extra tax money to re-educate the unemployed workers so they can do the job of getting new forms of energy accessible to everyone.  have them installing solar panels, designing systems of geothermal energy, maintaining those big windmills people want to have.

we need to actually work to get this country back on track.  and that work includes the newer forms of energy we're supposed to be developing.  we're going to need techs to help keep things running smoothly.  we have to make it happen it's not going to fall into our lap.

These are some great ideas!  Anyone in DC listening?
There are only a couple of these I don't like:

$10/gallon tax on gasoline?  How about $5 and phased-in over a period of time.  Give 1/2 to the oil companies? Screw the oil companies!  Put it all into developing electric & hydrogen cars and public transit.  I look forward to a time when the only gasoline powered cars on the streets were built by Detroit prior to say 1975 :)

The reason we have troops in Germany, etc. is so that if Germany were attacked we would be directly involved.  WW II was burning long before Pearl Harbor but the mood in this country was very isolationist.  We've kept troops on foreign soil ever since.  But to your point, we probably don't need to keep nearly as many as we do.  Bring 'm home and use 'em elsewhere!

And again: some great ideas here!

1) Eliminate the Federal Reserve and return control of the money supply and the issuance of credit to the citizens.

2) Institute an effective form of Judicial accountability. We have no real justice in our system currently due to lack of accountability. Courts can and do rule any way they want. No amount of laws does any good without an honest judiciary.

Now that we have a few ideas out here, those that have read this topic need to keep them in mind when watching our politicians over the next few years. See if any of them go after these problems in earnest or if they just give lip service to get elected.

I agree with Dave that these are some great ideas, but you have to wonder why our government has not focused on them more.

greetings KittinSol

we truly are opposites in many respects ~~ 1) if a person was seen by doing the act (death penalty act), 2)  the forensic evidence proves it out, and 3) they are judged guilty ~~ do not allow appeals.  Euthanize them.  i am extremely pro-death penalty.  We are too lenient with serious law breakers, and spend wayyyyy too much $$ keeping them in prison.

Also, execution of the most vile criminals in our system, murders, child molesters, rapists, drug lords, gang leaders. one appeal, then its done and a date set.

i would;

1. tax the hell out of the rich people
2. get rid of all the people on death row
3. stop the war overseas and bring our people home.
4. make the wait time for the death penalty much much shorter.
5. make dental be included in Medicare/Medicaid

This is actually a tough question when looking at the OP - because it asks specifically what TWO things would you do.  While folks have given some great ideas, most have gone far beyond that "two".  It's not an easy decision to make, out of the several things that Need to get done to get things back on track.

1.)  Balance the budget.  Which would include things mentioned as various different items by others, but Starting with pushing for an absolute Flat Tax of 12% across the board - both for individuals and for companies - with Zero loopholes.  I don't care if you're rich or poor, a private citizen or a multimillion dollar corporation - for every $1 you make, 12 cents comes off the top in taxes.  If you only make $1, you only pay 12 cents, if you make $1mil - you pay proportionately, no exceptions.  And for those who attempted to make their own loophole by moving their money outta the country - seizure of any and all real assets remaining on US soil - how's That for an incentive not to try and cheat, folks - lose everything, no exception, if you do so.  After that come other steps.  Cutting all federal programs that are not absolutely necessary to run this country completely out.  Cut military spending by at least half.  Requiring that any budget put before me by congrease have zero deficit spending.  Refusal to sign any bill that contained riders giving congrease any sort of raise or benefits increase.  Repealing any law currently on the books (regardless of it's form) that gives the members of congrease special privilages over and above what their constiuancy carries (ie, no more tax breaks, no more getting their expenses paid outta the public til, etc.)   Disolve the Fed. Reserve and make banks succeed or fail on their own management and merit, just like any Other business.  Outlawing all PACs, and any campaign contribution over $500 from a singal source (whether company or individual) and immediate prosecution of any politician accepting bribes in the form of goods, services, or cash from any entity except excplicitly during active campaigning for office as long as the donation falls within that $500 limit.  Want more money to campaign with?  Convince more people that you'll do a good job so that they're willing to donate!  (That will level the playing field significantly, and force politicians to actually do a good job in order to get reelected - thus cutting down on their propensity to do stupid things like offer deficit budgets, give themselves unearned raises, send folks off to die in the name of corporate greed, etc.)

2.) Work on rebuilding our capacity for self suficiency as a nation.  This would include significantly higher import taxes levied against companies on any products produced overseas - whether the company was based here or not - possibly combined with significantly lowered export taxes.    Such tax incentives - of either variety - would not include the base 12% flat income tax on all entities - it would be a seperate sort altogether, and based strictly on import/export taxes, which are completely seperate from sheer level of gross income.  This is duel edged, as it gives the company a doubled tax incentive to keep the majority of their jobs here - which in turn keeps more people employed, and able to spend money on what that company produces.  Tax incentives for those trying to start small businesses and community based businesses.  Also included in this part would be massive overhaul of the educational system from the ground up, getting rid of wishy-washy feel-good claptrap like "no child left behind" - if they can't cut it without lowering the standards, then they can't cut it, and they need to start learning at an early age (like many of us did) that Success is NOT guarenteed, failure isn't rewarded, and life is full of disappointments and not always coming out on top.

If I were President, I would turn these tv ads off.  They are driving me crazy today.
The one thing I would do is live like the average middle class person and buy my groceries, pump gas, etc.
They lose touch with the real people fast.
I would serve in the same war I promoted.

3) Surrender the war on drugs, and eliminate all other crimes that would fit under the heading of "consentual" or "victimless." The list of these is too long to go into but would cover things such as prostitution, homosexuality, sodomy. Who in these transactions is not consenting? Who in these transactions has been injured and rightfully has a victim status as a result?

4) Eliminate private prisons that are run for profit. No one should ever profit by taking away the freedom of another.

private run prisons do not take away another's freedom, the criminal surrenders his freedom when it is proven he or she committed the crime.  when it is proven you don't belong in society because you can't get along, we have two choices, incarcerate or eliminate.  i'd like to see the incarcerated actually work for their keep, and death row?  it should mean that, get in line worthless scum!

Prison is proven to not work. In the light of this, would you suggets that all criminals should get summirely executed with a bullet in the head, like in China?

OMG, why do people believe this?  Inmates do work in prison; they readily volunteer for work.  It breaks the monotony of incarceration.  I don't know why people believe inmates are sitting around watching television, lifting weights, and shooting pool.  For fuck's sake, go visit a medium or maximum security prison.  The "country club" prisons people seem to believe exist are minimum security prisons, and inmates have to earn their way into those facilities.  Minimum security facilities cost much less to operate, and they provide an incentive for inmates to behave and actively participate in rehabilitation programs.  You can't use negative reinforcement exclusively in corrections.  It endangers the staff and other inmates in correctional institutions.

My biggest platform would be to do away with ear-marks in bills. Each bill would have to stand on it's own. If you agree to vote for one bill, in exchange for an ear-mark, then when the ear-mark bill is made, you can vote for it. This will make it easier for the voting public to discern what a candidates real position is.  It would nullify the confusion and misleading statements that someone voted for or against a bill, when it was actually the ear-marks they were voting for or against.

Kitten, have you ever stopped to ask the question, "Why does our prison system fail?"

There are many reasons, but the primary one is that prisoners get menial jobs at best with no outside equivalent.  Inmates are released with no more skills than they had when they went in.

Want to make the system work, then train the inmates skills that can be put to immediate use on the outside.  Classes are offered, but classes dont provide the inmates with a source of money in which to use to purchase items in the prison stores.

Now, as for the death penalty.

Sexual predators are 9.5 times more likely to repeat their crimes.  Child molesters are just as likely to be repeat offenders.  Premeditated Murder, in case you don't know is a planned operation, which should be a capital punishment crime, and serial killers cannot be cured.

To use a very old analogy, if you have a dog running loose in your neighborhood that is known to attack and kill people, can you allow it to live?  The animal has only reverted back to its wild instincts for survival.

I would use the example of a cougar or wolf, but in those cases some fool built the housing development in their habitat and people stupid enough to move there deserve to be in the food chain.

Now, a serial killer, serial rapist, serial child molester, and a person that plans a murder in detail is no better than an animal, and thus cannot be allowed to survive.
