Among Republicans flipping to Obama I've detected three core feelings: we have to do something different; we cannot be the party of fiscal irresponsibility; we cannot be the angry party of an "America-first" jingoism that alienates the world.

I wonder how they'll get them back......

I think that they are going to need to distance themselves from the religious right.  This is something that they should have done about 20 years ago.

Both the Repubs and Dems need to rid themselves of religious fanatics.
BOTH the Repubs and Dems should be "jingoistic" when it comes to the U.S.
Most other countries certainly are about themselves!
Nothing wrong with that!
If you're a citizen of a certain country shouldn't you be "pro" that country?
I can't see cheerleaders cheering for the other team, can you?
And yes, we can't be fiscally irresponsable and the first thing that should be ended is foreign aid.
And as for "alienating" the world, fuck 'em!
The people *we* elect are in office to please *us* not foreigners!
They'd be doing themselves and us a favor by remembering that.
I don't like Dems or Republicans so I won't be wasting my vote tommorow by voting for the same people who've gotten us into this mess.
I want "change" too, I want to see a bunch of strange faces in office come Jan.

They need to be a party of proper opposition over the next four years. They need to fight for fiscal responsibility against Democratic party excesses. They need to not be pointlessly obstructionist and waste time arguing about flag burning and homosexuality.

I live with a former, die hard, republican. I doubt they will ever win that one back.

I've never considered myself part of either party due to extremes of both that I disagree with. However, I find the Republican party the most disagreeable (these days) because of their connection to the conservative Christian right. There is a prevailing attitude that those of us who don't embrace this philosophy are anti-American and that pisses me off! It angers me on a personal level, that the Democratic party does not. The Democrats piss me off because of the idea that everyone "deserves" a certain standard of living (which seems to keep getting more expensive) without working for it or earning it or sacrificing for it. I think they are stupid and foolish, but they aren't arrogant assholes! See the difference?

The Republican party still wears the vestiges of the old Imperialistic, Manifest Destiny philosophy that conquered the world hundreds of years ago. That concept that we are going to conquer the world, but it's not because we are greedy, power hungry bastards, it's because we need to teach the world how to be civilized and moral.  Right. So in a watered down way, that attitude still exists and it's a big part of the Republican party and it's strengthened by the religious right who still wants the whole world to be Christian. The Republican party has to let go of those very old, outdated ideals and focus on governing their nation in a practical fashion.

Can't the Republican party be the voice of studied, methodical practicality? The one that deals with what is most fiscally responsible and conservative and creates the most stability? The one that deals with reality as it is, not as they hope it will be. That would leave the Dems to be idealistic and risk takers. Wouldn't that be a healthier balance of perspective than what we have now?

I won't be a die-hard Repuke or Dimocrap in this lifetime.  Period.

I've always voted as an independent person, and have never voted a straight party ticket in anything besides a primary.  The only difference now is that I'm  utterly disgusted with the self serving, downright evil, entities that the parties themselves have become.  I don't want my name sullied by being on the roles of either.

Each party has had me on their roles at least once.  This was largely to do with living in a couple places in Florida where there is literally only one party in the county.  Local elections were settled in the primaries, wtih the exception of run-offs, which were not common.  This is slowwwwwwwly changing.  Be that as it may, should I find myself in one of those areas again, I'll not change affilliation because of it.

And no...I don't see either party winning me back.  That doesn't keep me from being hopeful that at some point we'll have a President or Congress so good that I'm tempted.  I'd love to see THAT day.

Technically true but neither do we have to blindly love, honour and obey, the state we were accidently born in and given citizenship of, no matter what that country does or stands for.

Much as I love the country I was born into, I despise the state I am a citizen of.

Actually, I hold the passport of three nationalities and I wouldn't give carte blanche to any of them.

Iron, the problem with that "Citizen of the World" crap is that if that were true we'd have 5 billion people in the U.S. all with their hands out.
Ever notice that all the people who claim to be "Citizens of the World" never want to move to,...Haiti or some other 4th world shithole?
And a lot of them are the "college professor types" with the tweed jackets with the patches on the elbows who think they "know better" than everyone else and who in the fall of 2009 will be calling President Obama, "too conservative."

Mark, yeah, I saw that.
I don't like religious fanatics of any stripe!
You'd think people would have got the clue from al qeada.
I'm of the mind that all "religions" should be strictly banned in this country, they're far more trouble than they're worth!
Seems they all want to bring their wars to the U.S.!
Time for a Constitutional Convention!
I'd like to see that "Christal Cathedral" out in Calif. turned into a giant strip club!

It's a state of mind...

In my way of thinking, "The Earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof..."
That works for me.
If  this world was given as a gift to all mankind, there is no soverignty based on borders surrounding one's place of birth.  Of course there are nations, countries etc...but to allow them to make my view more narrow and more xenophobic based on a man-made ideal?  That cramps my style.  To each his own, but i say again,
i am a citizen of the world.

It's pretty much my way of thinking too. It's so simple, yet many don't seem to grasp the concept... beautifully said, jolie tulipe.
