what happened to the native people of america was pretty heinous. i'm part cherokee and while they may not want me in the tribe, native issues are EXTREMELY important to me, too. but there's a difference between that and being considered non-human and bought and sold as property. being a slave is a kink to people now, but in our history it means something else altogether.

both things were heinous, though. and i dont think there's any hierarchy of heinousness, it's not like there's some competition about whose ancestors were treated worse =p but atleast america is moving in the right direction. we're moving into the flipping future FINALLY, and one day we can all spaz out with joy over a native president just like we (well, some of us) are spazzing out over obama

It didn't help the Japanese when they tried to spend their way out of recession in a similar fashion; in fact, it exacerbated the situation. I would never have had you down as a proponent of large, public schemes, Popeye........'suppose election fever is turning a few minds over there.

or to bring this back home...it didn't help us to try and spend our way out of a depression under fdr. it made things much worse.

Ok, Obama haters... deal with it. HE is THE PRESIDENT ELECT!

You don't have to like it, any better than many of us liked it when GW was elected.  It's your turn to suck it up now...

um...I despise obama, just as I despise Bush. I didn't suck it up during the years of Bush and remained critical of everything he did...just as I will as obama ruins everything he touches.

That's not the same as going to someone's land, stealing them, selling them and forcing them to come to a foreign place in chains and subjugate them for profits. When we finally fought a civil war that was supposed to cease such actions, we still and for generations did everything in our power to subjugate and separate people simply because of their DNA. We came here and conquered .. we went overseas and stole. Conquering, not pretty .. but stealing, thievery  ... that's dishonorable. Tonight we took a baby step in trying to rectify that as well.

YMMV

well...we didn't go into a country to steal people. we bought slaves from african traders (and I believe a lot of arabs were selling africans as slaves also). now it is unquestionable that slavery is as unethical as it gets...but to think that electing someone who happens to have more melanin in their skin 'makes up' for what happened in the past strikes me as odd. to me, it seems completely irrelevent.

and let's not get started on the war of northern aggression.

I still don't understand why we should spazz out over a president because of his race...

in my view, he's a democratic president (yay) who happens to be brown-colored
that adds extra sparkle

sometimes people try too hard to think outside the box but honestly the fact that he is brown-colored IS still kind of a big deal, because nobody really thought people would look past that.
bradley effect, blah blah blah
it actually does matter because of the fact that it didn't matter, if that makes sense.

It's historical fact. We bought slaves and we went in raided and kidnapped.

I have no idea why you put 'makes up' in quote marks since I never said such a thing. Perhaps you should go back and reread my posts on this subject.

As for the war of northern aggression, I agree. It does not belong in this thread and I apologize to the OP for the highjack.

Once again, my congratulations to President elect Obama.

I'm pretty sure the majority of slaves were initially captured by africans and then sold to europeans.

and let's be more specific with our pronouns, 'we' did not buy slaves and raid other people's villages...'we' are not responsible for this at all.

I'm not addressing only you. I'm addressing the general sentiment that electing a black man is a huge step forward for america. if anything, the enthusiasm for electing a black man says to me that we haven't 'moved forward' very much...

Oh happy day comrades!
I am out to buy a couple of Washington Post newspapers.

This is a great time to start a President Obama scrapbook!

colouredin -> RE: Obama has officially been elected President of the United States (11/5/2008 4:59:36 AM)

My friends, family and myself are extatic that Obama won, lets hope that it lives up to what it promises, there will be people who dont agree, there always will there will be people banging on about his race, despite all that its a dawn of a new age, after eight dark years there is a light at the end of the tunnel, of course the proof is in the pudding, but I dont think there is anything wrong with just being happy with right now, this result has restored my faith in American people

sambamanslilgirl -> RE: Obama has officially been elected President of the United States (11/5/2008 5:06:16 AM)

i should get some sleep but too excited after spending my entire night covering reactions around town....

WOW - that's all i can say after seeing the tens of thousands times 50 packing the north end of Grant Park (and more people were still coming when Obama's speech was over).

you could feel the excitement in the air - strangers chatting like long lost friends ready to begin the new chapter in American history ...people were in tears celebrating the news ...young, old, all colors and genders standing side by side - WOW.

i lost my voice again from cheering so much ...in Wicker Park, people were screaming Obama's name ...stopping traffic ...on the SouthSide, there was pride everywhere around Obama's residence ...no rioting or looting either - what a historic night

SilverMark -> RE: Obama has officially been elected President of the United States (11/5/2008 5:14:00 AM)

Perhaps if you had something to say aside from the comment on losers, fakes etc.?
I understand that you are undoubtedly approached by those who don't fit your criteria but, when you start your profile as you do you will be looked upon as at least unapproachable if not thought of as bitchy?
Just an observation from a disinterested reader.

If you honestly didn't care...you wouldn't be on here whining about it?
