I haven't taken much notice of the American election tobe completely honest. I have no idea of either candidates policies or anything.
I wanted Obama to win it though, i wanted to see the first black president. Thing is and i know this may be a very sensitive subject for some and i apologise in advance if it is. There are people out there who will not like having a black president. It has been quite a topic of convo in my pub today and general consesnus seems to be that there will be some kind of assassination attempt on him.
What do you all think?

There has been more than one poster on CM that seems to be waiting for it to happen. With a lot of people I have trouble discerning just where their unhappiness stems from, is it because he is black or is it because of his political beliefs?

It's a topic of conversation here too.  I think there are many attempts/plots against the President that we never hear about.  The Secret Service which protects the President is very competent at what they do. 
 
I think people are nervous about it for several reasons:  (1) there are those who won't want a black President; (2) there are those who hate the US who believe that assassinating a President who is so popular would be a fantastic way to undermine the country; (3) this would be a devastating event.  I remember when Reagan was shot; I was in high school and watching it made me nervous and unsettled - and I was only 16 and didn't really care one way or the other about politics at that time.  Just seeing the video of him falling was enough to make me very uncomfortable.  Imagine that on a much larger scale ...

Oops i didn't mean to repeat a post.
Truthfully i think if something happens it will be pure and simply because he is black. A sad state of affairs.
I actually dread to think what would happen if we had a black prime minister.

We shouldn`t feed the dark side.

President elect Obama is fully aware of what he`s doing and getting himself into.No one can be more aware than him.

It spite of that,he waded in.

We (all people of good will) should move forward without fear,also.

There was a thread on this subject just a week ago I believe.

I'm just wondering..if I black man were to become PM do you think there would be a big worry about him being assassinated because of his skin color?

I agree. However the other wonder we have is how many american tax dollars will be spent on extra protection / security on him because of the possible higher risk of an assassination attempt?

LET's Delete this thread.   It serves no purpose to discuss such a thing but maybe stir up some radical thinking.     If that isn't a good enough reason let's consider that the discussion of such things is illegal and I assume therefore against the terms of service here.

I don't think that's really an issue - it's worth any amount of money it takes to protect the President and his family.  I do feel for his children, who are going to be quite isolated, I think - I feel that way about any President's children.  As Owner59 said, he knew what he was getting into - he's smart enough to realize the ramifications.

While I was typing my post above it became obsolete because of the other posts...BUT...I just get the idea that GB and the rest of Europe believes there is a massive constant race war in America...If so they are wrong...we get along quite well as Americans...the days of blatant racism are gone...we will not stand for it.

I just hope the rest of the world can catch up someday.

Presidential targets (a lot of world leaders in fact) are par for the course with assassins. Obama is no different. I would be more surprised if there weren't an attempt since most of our recent presidents have had attempt made on their lives.

Gerald Ford, Richard Nixon, Bill Clinton, Ronald Regan, George Bush and more have all had attempts made on their lives.

While i don't think these two were capable of getting to Obama, the fact of the matter is, the possibility is unfortunately alive in the US and this was last week.  Most Metro police forces have Hate-Crime units because there really is that much of this type of crime still in our country.  However, i am sure Obama has considered this possibility and risk and his security will probably make an extra effort to make sure all basis of mentality are convered when checking his security.
