FatDomDaddy -> NeoLibs??? How will the anti war crowd react to the New Liberal Hawks? (11/7/2008 8:30:08 PM)

Rahm Emanuel, Chief of Staff

Jane Harman, CIA The War party is well represented in "Change" cabinet. Personally, I don't see Rahm (Wall Street's man in Congress) Emanuel, Israeli Defense Force Officer and bitter democrat partisan as being an agent of change. I think the Anti-war and Anti Wall Street crowd may be a bit disappointed. Time will tell.

I had a hard time understanding the linked article.  Are they saying that Harman's been appointed?  It wasn't presented as being a rumor.

BitaTruble -> RE: NeoLibs??? How will the anti war crowd react to the New Liberal Hawks? (11/7/2008 9:03:21 PM)

~FR~

Chief of Staff is an internal position which renders rather moot any expectation of bi-particianship. It's the Cabinent positions that will be more telling than the action transition team. Why would any Chief of Staff position bring about a change agenda? That's not the job description.

A Harman appointment post is premature as it hasn't happened at this point.

Look at the Chiefs of staff of the most recent Presidents all "tough" "bulldog" type personalities. It is what is called for to keep the President's office in order and those who would waste time out. Of course those who wish to find fault always will. All speculation, opinion and conjecture....

p.s. neo-libs?....that is a new one for me....but I think neo-cons and libs as terms or labels are both derisive.

meatcleaver -> RE: NeoLibs??? How will the anti war crowd react to the New Liberal Hawks? (11/8/2008 5:16:14 AM)

It's entirely predictable. The forces of political and monied establishment and the military-industrial complex are far too great for any President to handle. Eisenhower pointed this out just because he left office.

I heard on the radio this morning that Obama promised to push ahead with the siting of missiles in Poland and Czech. No change there then. I had to admit, not even a cynic like me expected to be disillusioned so soon.

blah, blah, blah....cutting past all the shit stirring....
i think Rahm Emanuel is frickin' hawt!!!!!!!!*drool*   i haven't been able to say that about Card or Bolten.  Although admittedly, i would probably do Bolten, he has a certain air....the serene look of a man that knows where the bodies are buried.  But Emanuel...pure animal magnetism.  As far as him being an Isreali defense force officer....even better!!!!   *picturing a nice private cliff overlooking a kibbutz, some dates, and Kadurem cheese.....a few hours to kill....freshly pressed olive oil lube.....an Uzi hastily thrown in the bushes...clothes ripping...*

As far as the "Neo-Libs"...(is that yours or Fox News' FDD???)a little wisdom from one of my best friend's grandmother:

Roselaure -> RE: NeoLibs??? How will the anti war crowd react to the New Liberal Hawks? (11/8/2008 5:24:08 AM)

NeoLib?  That's a new one for me, but it's nice to know the world is coming around to my viewpoint.  I've always been a liberal hawk.  My opposition to Iraq was not because I'm opposed to war in general but because I thought it was ill conceived and poorly executed.  I'm about as socially liberal as they come but also pro gun and for a strong defense.

Obama is wise.  He will need strong no BS people in positions of power to keep every liberal with an issue who's been waiting all this time at bay.  He's likely to have more trouble with the Democrats than the Republicans, but I think he can handle it.  But no change?  Seems like a big change to me.

OrionTheWolf -> RE: NeoLibs??? How will the anti war crowd react to the New Liberal Hawks? (11/8/2008 6:32:03 AM)

As Bita pointed out, it is an internal position but.... it is also the position that can have one of the greatest influences on a President. I think the appointment brings White House experience combined with a tough guy approach, to a President that needs that. As an independent I believe the appointment was a wise one.

Nah Silver.."neo-lib" not a new thingy...  just us "neo-con" types responding to the derisive word the libs have used for years.  More to come now that the liberal wing of the party dominates and controls the Congress AND the Presidency.
Will be particularly interesting to see the new word descriptions that Obama creates everytimg he goes off script, like his stupid comments about Nancy Reagan trying to show he has a sense of humor... I've saved all of Pelosi's derisive comments on Bush, and will just have to cut and paste and change the name...

corysub -> RE: NeoLibs??? How will the anti war crowd react to the New Liberal Hawks? (11/8/2008 7:16:58 AM)

I don't think people appreciate the power of the "Chief of Staff" to the President.  It depends, of course, on the relationship between the two men but Rohm and Barack are close friends, along with David Axelrod, and he will be a very strong "gatekeeper" of the Oval Office.  NOONE makes an appointment with the President withhout it going through the Chief of Staff....he is in frequent daily contact with the President, is an important advisor, and will have an important vote on all appointments.  Rohm would NEVER have taken this job to be a "secretary" to the President and keep his appointment book.. If you think he is that kind of man, you don't understand this ambitious, ruthless, cunning, intelligent, focused, driven, politician...you don't know the man.  He is Carl Rove in a tutu.....yea...the guy took ballet lessons, but he also carried an Uzi in the IDF.  As Hillary once described him in a roast....Rohm is a "conflicted man"...with a seven word vocabulary...
He will shake things up...and be more than an "internal appointment"....

Well NeoCon certainaly is. I has come to be a code word for rich war loving Jew or Jew lover.

I doubt that the same critics, who's use of the term NeoCon drips with bigotry and contempt will be using a similar term for hawkish, bullish advisers to President Elect Obama.

I've never heard neo-cons described as 'war loving Jew' before. A good bit of propaganda by the right me thinks. Though Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz and Perle are Jewish, there are plenty of Jewish people that despise their politics and anyway, the Strausian (yes I know he is Jewish too) philosophy that those are desciples of, is paranoid and warmongering, that is a fact.

Greetings, Orion--

The chief of staff position can be a position of great influence, but it's less of an issue if you have a President that listens to his other staff/has a collaborative approach.  If Obama surrounds himself with yes-men and is cut off from other influences (a problem with Bush 43), then it's much more troublesome.

Chief of staff is the post that will have the most influence on any agenda.

Anyone who doubts the power of such a position needs to study up on Martin Bormann.

Somehow I doubt that.

Well you are wrong. It sounds like an Americanism to me. However, it wouldn't surprise me if the term was invented by the right to be used in smeering its opponents. Ironically, that is how Strausian philosophy works.

This is another reason I'm glad I'm not Republican or Democrat.
I can't even keep up with all the differant names you guys call each other.
