In my youth I had a '71 Mercury Cougar musclecar that I had tricked out fairly heavily.  The speedo went to 120, and I had it quite well buried on a few occasions.  Now that I drive German cars I realize how incredibly badly that boat handled..  it's a miracle that I didn't kill myself in it.  That, and the fact that it got about three or four miles a gallon when you rode her hard with all four barrels wide open.   And what a backseat she had, too...  ;p.   Ah, the folly of being young & dumb... how I miss it.

Well, in my Camaro, I've gotten it up to 125 or so.  In my (slightly modified) '06 Volvo S60 R, I was racing a Honda Civic on I-10 and I hit 145 and was still climbing with relative ease...I guess the 160 on the speedometer is easily attainable.

First time out on my summer bike I was doing 125 in the middle of January at 3 degrees.
The coppers frequently let us do 90 up here because when we get to a 30mph zone we do stick to 30!  They know bikers will be going past the 50/60/70 limit but if we stick to 30 in 30s, 40 in 40s, and be sensible in 50s then they're fine with us.

What's more fun than breaking the limit is doing 0-60 in 3.76 seconds in front of the copper - assuming the road conditions are suitable.  Great fun.  I get far more enjoyment from getting to speed quickly than travelling at high speed.

Strangely enough, I had perfect control while driving, but had a hard time maintaining control when slowing down.

Anyone know why that was?

When you brake, the weight of the car shifts forward and over the front wheels. All that weight, combined with the force of braking being done mostly with the front wheels, makes the steering feel a lot harder (or more "squishy). If the car is a rear-wheel driven vehicle, the rear end of the car, now with a bit less weight over the drive wheels, may feel like it wants to step out of line, particularly if you're trying to turn and brake hard at the same time.

That's why people can make donuts with rear-wheel drive cars.

I knew some car-smart person on here would know. It was harder to control while breaking, so I eased off the brake and just let it coast down a little. But it was pretty hard not to start freaking out.

Currently have a GPZ500S and a CM200T.
The Honda certainly wouldn't be suited to the States, but both are ideal for the back country roads up here and if you really open the taps then you can get the Honda's economy down to 75mpg.

Incidentally, what's yours?

Harley's are great for the States, but I wouldn't want one over here.
We have roads that most American car/bike manufacturers don't know exists.  We have bends, hills, valleys, and our roads are a fraction of the width of those your way.  Then add the price of petrol and you're better off with a bike better suited to the environment.

I'd love an OCC bike but there's only so much of the year I'd be able to use it, and wouldn't risk taking it on the country roads.

Chelle, a friend of mine has traded in her Harley for a Bandit-6 and has never looked back.

I'd just like to be able to ride without a lid sometimes.

no helmet law in FL *grin*  There are some awesome roads here.. and while I'm not a Harley snob by any stretch, I like the cruiser rides on twisty roads

This is bugging me, I've ticked to get an e-mail update when someone responds to threads and they're not coming through.

I've ridden without a lid in the past, but primarily on private property and that's not the same.  Did 110mph without a lid on a rally course which was fun but then had to put the lid back on to ride home.

I've ridden Harley's before, my insurance covers me for any bike as long as I have their permission to ride it.  The problem is, I'm used to a bike that has a great power to weight ratio and the Harley didn't have that, to make things worse on the roads I rode it handled like a boat rather than a jet-ski.
My mate has/had an XJ1100 with longer forks, loads of power, great handling and looks outstanding.  I don't hate Harley's (I know it's starting to look that way) but I've not yet found a road suitable to ride one other than a dual carriageway or motorway.

The Sportsters are meant for the twisty roads.. they handle entirely different than the larger bikes..

I'll grant that they may handle differently than larger HDs, but they still weigh over 550 freakin' pounds! Srsly, a bike with a legitimately high power-to-weight ratio and a modern suspension is a whole different ballgame...

Oh sh1t!!  It was a Sportster I was referring to! lol
If that's the best bike Harley have produced then I think I'll steer clear of the rest..... at least until I get the funds to travel the States.
