knees2you -> Capital letters? (12/18/2005 11:15:37 PM)

I Live in Las Vegas.
Been here most of my life. It really doesn't mean
all that much.
I was Born Submissive and have been all my life.

But when I first joined a group out here,
Everybody who was a Domm
was always using Capital letters and subs/slaves
where using small letters to start their names.

So it stuck with me.[:D]

Is there really A difference or a Prefrence, in Bdsm
when pertaining to this?

I really don't know myself. As for on line. I was always told that a submissive always has name in lower case as the Dom/Dommes always upper. I guess it really depends on what party you are attending.

Some get uptight over the A/all... the Y/you...When you are taught one thing it's hard to drop it. But as far as that goes, to each their own.

I just personally think the Capiltal M in Master or Mistress also looks better than master or mistress. That is a pet peeve with me. I actually find it to be disrectful to the title.

That's just it, though. I don't see it was a "title" so much as a description. I can't fucking stand reading text where the words dom, dominant, master, and mistress are capitalized in every instance. It's especially bad when it's a dominant person who is writing himself or herself. I find it more than just arrogant. I find it ludicrous and just plain silly. It's just as bad as capping the pronouns. "I flogged My slave last night. I am a Dominant. Hear Me roar!" It makes me want to laugh, most of the time, and dominants who write this way do not earn my respect as easily as those who can communicate with proper English.

When my slave addresses me, I am "Master." But if she said "My Master is very Dominant" I think I'd have to stand her in the corner and make her write it PROPERLY on the black board a few dozen times.

physcsdrk -> RE: Capital letters? (12/18/2005 11:46:41 PM)

I am not a slave, I am a submissive, and so obviously that is going to have some affect on my response.
I actually find it offensive that some think it is disrespectful not to capitalize words like dom, master, domme, etc. I know that many consider it a sign of respect, but I believe I am just as worthy of respect as anyone else. Being a sub does not somehow make me lesser. So if my dom wanted me to capitilize it to Dom then I would tell him fine as long as he typed sub as Sub.

On a side note but not totally off topic:
I recently chatted with a domme from this site.
I typed "hello" to her, first thing after exchanging im's.
She typed "hello, and that is hello m'am to you"
I don't like it when people have that type of attitude, so I said "I only submit to those I have chosen to submit too"
she said "it's just a matter of respect."
which is fine. I will respect you as long as you will show the same degree of respect for me. so i put "I will be more then happy to follow your wishes and call you m'am, if you will do the same for me and call me princess."
lol she got pissed and stopped talking to me.

But that conversation shows where I am coming from.[:)]

FelinePersuasion -> RE: Capital letters? (12/19/2005 1:28:44 AM)

Yes knee's

To me there is a huge diffrence. I do not belive in lowercasing something about myself, my name, or anything because in my opinion there's no way to tell if someone did it because they was A lazy, B a sub, OR c had some secret reason.

Because nobody follows a one set protocal for every single person alive in bdsm, it seems to me people would be better served asking a polite question of the persons orentation should it be wished to know.

And also all though I am horrible enept at grammar and proper stuff, I try to stick to proper stuff as much as possible as to what I know. Proper nouns, such as a name is capitalized.

How we type online will eventually creep into our real life offline writing styles, and in real life settings where writing is important i instead of I will get you marked for a spelling error. W/s stuff wouldn't even be recognised in main stream writing. I found myself using chat speak like LOL and hehehe and*g* more and more online so that when I had to write offline in real life chatspeak invaded every part of my writing abilities.

I try to be coherent, I try to punctualize where it belongs. To me writing the way I should if it was offical and not just online, keeps me from forgetting how to ever write a sentance offline with out LOL's all over the place and tons of chatspeak/

Domme is not even a real word, well so someone reliable here has said it's some kind of word someone made up and it stuck, The correct word is Domina or Dominatrix

sweetpettjenny -> RE: Capital letters? (12/19/2005 2:48:13 AM)

It is all in how you are trained or feel you need to present yourself as a submissive. my Owner wants capitals for Himself and lower case for me. i never was asked to do that from my previous two owners. Its all in preferences of our Dom/me , or Master/Mistress in my personal opinion.

nephandi -> RE: Capital letters? (12/19/2005 4:16:02 AM)

i lovercase my nick and say i me and mine and i say Master and Mistress or Dom and so on, i do it out of habbit and becouse it is a way to show on witch side of the whip i am on.

Well, the capitalisation is something I have always done, because in the online community to which I belong it is a universal convention. Yes, I see it as a matter of respect - but not respect for the individual but for their station. To lowercase 'sub' is to me as much as matter of respect as to uppercase 'Dom/ina' (thanks, FelinePersuasion).

I see it as a courtesy more than anything else, and a courtesy is something that makes social interactions flow the smoother. I think it's possible to overdo it, mind you. If I wrote in this way I would feel it would reflect badly on Me, making My Sentences difficult to read and ultimately affecting My Communications with A/all others. But Dom/ina, sub, Master, slave, seems to me to be a useful convention, acknowledging our respective stations within the community.

I wonder where the word 'Domme' came from. The interesting thing is that whenever I hear it spoken, it is pronounced incorrectly ('Dommay', as though it had an acute accent over the 'e'). In fact as spelled, its pronunciation should be indistinguishable from 'Dom', which makes it rather useless except when typed. When speaking, you have the choice of mispronouncing the word or using a phrase like 'female Domme', which is a bit ludicrous.

So from now on I'll be using 'Domina'. :)

Yourkitten -> RE: Capital letters? (12/19/2005 5:01:44 AM)

if i receive an email from someone who respects me then i will do the same. if i receive an email from someone who says what they would like to do to me then they get no respect. as for capital letters, this is a computer, its not real life. if i feel you deserve a captial then i will put it in but otherwise, we are talking on a computer. and when we talk online if you ask me to call you sir then i will but usually i will type your name.

DeepWaters -> RE: Capital letters? (12/19/2005 5:16:40 AM)

MHOO314 -> RE: Capital letters? (12/19/2005 6:16:47 AM)

I was always taught that way, its a preference for Me-- as much as writing at times to My boy in 3rd person--such as "She smiles"--we profess to say we let people in the life be--yet we criticize for writing styles--how ludicrous is that? That's no different that condemning someone for making a sub beg for something by saying, humans don't beg--its the L/life people, we all have O/our preferences, I don't call you out for yours. don't call Me out for Mine---

I've heard the "Doe-May" too. The first time I did I thought it was the same as "Tar-Jay" for "Target" and "Jacques in the Box," etc.

I just pronounce it "right" and try not to cringe when I hear it otherwise.

It all depends on who's party you are attending.

Personally I think its silly, I mean if someone’s dominance has to be signified or solidified by a capital letter then there is something just wrong. My owner is a stickler for grammar and proper spelling so he capitalizes my name and I capitalize his. I remember I once tried to explain to him the online practice of capitalizing dominant’s nicknames but not submissive’s nicknames and he looked at me like I was crazy.

As everyone knows already, i don't care whether a writer uses Y/you; Dominant; or acronymns like "4 u". i do care whether they can come off some of this fantasy stuff and give me their first names, so communication can commence. Most do; some a bit snuffly about it; others cannot. There is a screen door for them; as in "don't let the door....".

AbstractSavant -> RE: Capital letters? (12/19/2005 10:27:00 AM)

I don't do it. I believe in showing respect by typing in a grammatically correct manner.

MasterHyde -> RE: Capital letters? (12/19/2005 10:59:47 AM)

A prior poster said:

"If I wrote in this way I would feel it would reflect badly on Me, making My Sentences difficult to read and ultimately affecting My Communications with A/all others. But Dom/ina, sub, Master, slave, seems to me to be a useful convention, acknowledging our respective stations within the community."

Why is this useful, I wonder. Do ANY of these words change their basic meaning when you capitalize them? Is anyone with even the most rudimentary understanding going to misunderstand you if you type "dominant" instead of "Dominant?"

I don't think so. And in that regard, these conventions are not useful at all. They are simply a way to accomodate personal taste. Another way to say "Look at us, we're different" and "You can't be one of us if you don't know our secret code."

I have nothing against uppercase and lowercase differentiations in one's name. In the change of one keystroke, I can communicate whether I'm dominant or submissive, and I can do so without mucking up every pronoun or every reference to words that already have perfectly obvious associations with whichever side of the relationship you wish to be on. But taking it farther than that is excessive, unnecessary, and in some cases, divisive and annoying.
