Its called "profit taking." The Dow has been up for the past four sessions so a correction today was expected. You could have bought nearly any stock Tuesday morning and then sold it early in the session today for a nice double digit gain I know I did. I had some 15 and 20 percent movers yesterday that I cashed in this morning because I knew what was going to happen. Depending on what happens in the pre-market tomorrow I may very well increase my positions in some of my long term stocks. I will keep an eye out for quick trades on the pops and drops too.

The S&P 500 is down 35.11 percent year to date, The DOW is down 31.1  percent and the NASDAQ is down 36.6 percent. My self managed portfolio is only down about 10% for the year and I was holding on to double digit gains until June. Even after that point I was still flat or slightly positive till the real insanity started at the end of September.
Even after the craziness that has been going on for the past two months I have made some ballsy trades that have gotten me closed to even a couple of times. With the extreme volatility going on I have taken a serious beating the very next day but as long as I am beating the market as a whole I am happy.
A couple of more days like yesterday where I can make some quick gains then trim back positions the next day will put me even before the end of the year.

Enron filed for bankruptcy in November 2001.  Jeff Skilling, Andrew Fastow, and several other players were convicted and sent to prison, along with having to fork over millions to at least partially replenish the raided pension funds and otherwise make people whole.  Ken Lay likely would have been convicted except he had the good sense to die before the process was complete.

How exactly did the malefactors at Enron "get away" with it?

If anything, it was during the Bush years that they were held to account and brought to justice--along with Bernie Ebbers from WorldCom and all the incestuous accountant/consultant types at Arthur Andersen.
