...which brings to mind the most obvious point, that in the English language dictionary, neither "dominant" or "submissive" are nouns, at all.  There is no such thing as "a dominant," or "a submissive."

As DiurnalVampire has pointed out, they are both adjectives.

So, we're all misusing them.

...humbled...

Actually, according to www.m-w.com dominant is an adjective as well as a noun:
Main Entry: 2dominant Function:noun Date:1819 1: the fifth tone of a major or minor scale2 a: a dominant genetic character or factor b: any of one or more kinds of organism (as a species) in an ecological community that exerts a controlling influence on the environment and thereby largely determines what other kinds of organisms are present c: a dominant individual in a social hierarchy

Submissive still remains as only an adjective.  I don't even pay attention to the term 'domme'.  What's next, 'subbe'?

Well, okay...out of the Random House Unabridged Dictionary, the American Heritage Dictionary, Princeton University's Wordnet, Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary, and the thefreedictionary.com,
I see that Merriam-Webster's Medical Dictionary - of all places - is the only one that does have a definition of "dominant," that fits our use of it here, in context.

If a new usage of a word becomes commonly accepted, it'll eventually become recognized as proper.  But I had not seen that, before.  Maybe the reason it's in the medical dictionary, is because of use by sociologists, rather than perverts :D

Okay then... adding spelling test to pre-play negotiation form now...

It isn't spelling, it is word usage and basic grammar.  Same with "discrete" and "discreet."  Completely different meanings.

Though I've never started a thread on it, I do have it in my profile.  heh.

I was going with the title of the thread.  I didn't want to confuse anyone unnecessarily.

I do see the point of the op.. because I ALWAYS cringe when I see dominate used instead of dominant when someone declares themselves as such.

I have actually emailed a few people (those whose profiles were otherwise well written) to point it out.. and have been thanked by most of them.. although there was one guy who pitched a fit for me being so 'unbecomingly forward" as to correct him *insert eyeroll here*

I'd just like to point out that there are plenty of people on here for whom English is not their first language.

Just saying...

Having at least glanced at every reply (although admittedly I might have missed something) I'm surprised to be the first person mentioning that this post has yet again taken the concept of beating a dead horse to the extreme.

I'll be the first to agree that this drives me crazy. I also happened to marry a man who made the very same mistake, and many other grammar and spelling mistakes. To this day I find myself cringing when we are stuck instant messaging... it is particularly painful because that is our primary form of communication these days.

I found it funny that a paper typed up by one of his NCO's months ago actually had soldier spelled "soilder." Talk about not being able to spell what you are. My husband quite often spells it the same way.

The best part of all of this is that my husband is an intelligent person. I don't know about the aforementioned NCO, but most of the people who have made it to E-5 in my husband's platoon are at least of average intelligence.

I am embarrassed to say that if you go and do a search on my posts, you will find that one of the first ones I ever made on the CM board, a couple of years ago, was a tirade about the way people used capitalization and punctuation in the online realm of BDSM. Someone also ripped apart every little grammatical error in it, much like one of the replies to this post.

So, let's just give it a rest, eh? We all know some of the folks on here can't spell or type. Some of us tend to do a pretty good job at it, even if it's not perfect. I found through my husband that just because someone can't communicate well through text, you cannot assume that they are stupid, or cannot communicate. He is actually fairly articulate on the phone or in person.

Too bad it took me so long to learn that lesson. It isn't that I think I might have found a better person for me.. I firmly believe my husband and I are soulmates.. but I might have made some good friends along the way.

Mind you if the problem is on the poiles why come over to the boards to getyour nickers in a twist, the journal is a good place for that (i wrote an essay on how i dont like people capping their own name on there)

That's what I was thinking, moonvine.  It isn't a spelling error, but a misuse of language.  It used to bother me a bit, but I don't even see it anymore.

When claiming to be a Dominant, you should, indeed, at least be able to spell it.
Now, for grammar.....pay attention, especially you Johnnies from the colonies, or you might find yourself outside polishing my Bentley.

I would accept a "Dominate is he" from Yoda too.

Ok, I get what the op is saying... when they created the profile they obviously clicked on the little box next to "dominant"... the proper spelling is right there!! So either they weren't paying attention to it or they have a really short attention span... neither quality sounds appealing in a dominant personality. Oh, and I make it a point... I am not a female dominant... I am a dominant female.

It's kind of like searching for Harley stuff on ebay... you can also find it under Harly and Harley Davison.... and the stuff is sitting there right in front of you!!! It's not like the proper spelling isn't right f*cking there!!!

Ok, I feel better now.

DomiNATE is a verb ~ as in "to dominate"
DomiNANT is an adjective~ as in "She/He is a dominant"

It really bothers me to see incorrect grammar or misspelled words also. So I thought I'd point out your mistake.

When you use the word dominant the way you did in the latter "definition", it's a NOUN. Here's an example of dominant being used as an adjective: 'She is dominant.' Hence, it is describing HER which is the operation of an adjective.

Just thought I'd let you know this, since you tried to correct people in the first place!

i must admit that the "dominant"/"dominate" faux pas is one of my personal pet peeves as well; along with a plethera of other similar cringe-worthy spelling and grammar mistakes and the lack of the most basic punctuation.  Being a former English major (and eternal English snob); that's pretty much par for the course.  And, i must admit that i have considered starting a similar thread to the Op's; particularly after coming across a profile wherein one Gentleman misused "dominate" at least 3 times just in the first paragraph of His profile. *oy vey*

Ultimately, i decided not too.  Why?  Well, partly because it's not my job to go around correcting everyO/one who is less English savvy than i.  And partly because it's more fun to point and snicker and say "Hey, Master, come look at this one!" while allowing the English poor to happily remain so.  And let's face it, most folks aren't here looking to hook up with an award for best English/Spelling...they're here to hook up with like-minded folks and/or, hopefully, find a workable relationship amongst all the friend-making and general frivolity of online chatting.  Besides, there are much more relevant things that i could bitc...err, rant about.  But, that's another thread.

Peace favor and blessed be,

P.S.  As a side note, you should see the way some submissives butcher the English language in written form and, likewise, misuse "dominant" and "dominate"...it's far from being a Dominant exclusive malady.

It used to irritate me but now I just see it as laughable.  I have my search criteria on my CM account set up so that I can easily spot whether my Master is online, and another Dom's profile often shows.  He brags about how "strick" he is and it always makes me laugh.  I had emailed him once and told him that he had a nice profile but wondered if he would like a little fine tuning of the grammar and spelling.  He had simply written back NO.  He changed it a few months later so now there are new grammar and spelling mistakes.  : )

C-D - I am so touched that you would protect your property like that!

Yeah I've noticed this too. I hate it when fellow lifestylers sound illiterate. Makes people think I am too.
