Just what is a assualt rifle? We have rifles that look cosmeticaly like assualt rifles that are just regular rifles.  In the US you cannot have an automatic weapon unless you are a liscensed dealer. I used to be a liscensed dealer. That is one way around a gun ban. What difference does it make in what type of rifle you hunt with. Screw the bambi huggers. They dont want us killing babbi. We have over 50,000 car deer accidents in Michigan alone every year. This time of year the highway is littered with dead dear. What happens to the people who die in some of these accidents. Are the bambi huggers going to give the deer a high five.  As far as gun ownership goes look at Switzerland. Every home there has a gun. Why worry about the tax on bullets when you can always make your own. As kids we made our own zip guns and small cannons.

Check this out: I am a 'bambi hugger' (though, not the rabid-conversionist sort, lol!) and I also own all manner of weapons, including guns.  Not everyone fits tidily into a box.  :>

Speaking of a hammer. We had a family killed with a guy using a hammer as a weapon. I believed it was the daughters boyfriend who did it. I know a guy who had his head bashed in with a brick. Should we dry up the lakes because people have used them to drown their victims. Wait don't forget fire. How about banning tornadoes or Hurricanes.

I've really been trying to stay out of this because I can understand both sides of the issue, but I had to comment on this.

You do understand that this argument doesn't really help your cause.

I mean, how many people die in hammer attacks, brick bashing, or being drowned evey year as opposed to how many die from guns?

Really the question (which i do not know the answer to) is how many deaths from guns came from legally registered guns as opposed to deaths from guns obtained illegally?

I am so sick of people's irrational fears becoming law. There are more gun owners in the US, than there are doctors. Yet medical malpractice kills more people than guns. The Vast and overwhelming majority of gun owners are law abiding citizens. Most criminals, are not in legal posession of their guns. In fact, the killing ability of a gun is far less than that of your automobile. There is a larger percentage of negligent automobile drivers than there are negligent gun owners.  These automobile drivers are propelling tons of metal down the road at excess speeds as they play with the radio, talk on the phone and put on their makeup; all with the capacity to wipe out car loads of victems. Try that with a gun. Please be advised a gun is a "firearm" it is not manufactured as a weapon. Anything can become a weapon when used with malice.
- For years, I concidered a concealed weapons permit. I did not get one, until I felt mature enough to handle the responsibility of that right.
I pay my taxes, I obey the law and I enjoy firearms. Quit punishing me for the acts of criminals!

Listen, Evility.  I'm have a f**king useless college degree in Sociology, but it is an interesting subject.

I took sociology as a joke...

easily the most bullshit study I've ever come across. and I study psychology so I've come across a lot of bullshit.

Gun sales are known to rise, not unexpectedly, any time a group is feeling anxious.  The folks in the U.S. have much to be anxious about right now.  Will Obama have the capacity to lead us out the current economic quagmire?  Or to exricate us from the f**king Wars in Iraq and Afganistan?

let me make this simple for everyone. The vast majority of people who are buying guns/ammunition are doing this because they think it's going to be much harder to come by in the near future. the election hasn't suddenly made them the kind of person who would want a gun. the election has, to them, simply been a catalyst for their decision.

Lets see A Democratic Congress with a democratic President signed into law a ban on "assault weapons" in 1994.
The next Democratic President also has a Democratic lead Congress and is on record as agreeing with the assault weapons ban.
So we should trust that because he said so he's not going to reinstate the ban?????????

Oddly enough the ban died of with a natural sunset provision and guess what No bloodbath happened. No ensuing spike in violence, the FBI statistics on the <1% of all gun crimes being committed with assault weapons has remained at <1%. They has solved a problem that didn't exist other than in the fearfull minds of the anti gun crowd.

So lets see the fear of "assault weapons" statisticly <1% of gun crime VS. The Fear of the government banning assault weapons (just finished a 10 year ban they set on them in 1994) WHo's fear is based more in reality?

I just have to say that I think it's really interesting that a lot of the people talking about gun ownership are using the same talking points as a lot of the people fighting on behalf of gay marriage (it's none of the governments business, just because you don't like it doesn't mean I shouldn't do it, etc) when it's safe to say a lot of gun owners oppose gay marriage... probably the wrong thread, but yeah, I just found it interesting.

I don't think the government should 'recognize' any marriage, gay or straight. if you're going to have a government and you're going to pretend to treat people equally, people need to be treated as individuals. consenting individuals can do whatever they want with their lives, be it ritual suicide to monogamy. it's none of my business.

prop 8 put me in a difficult position:
a) I don't think anyone should be taxed so giving anyone any tax break is a good thing.
b) I don't think the government should recognize any marriages...nor should they give special priviledges to one group and deny them to others (we should all be equally fucked, be we in stright relationships, gay relationships, or single).

In the end I would've voted yes on prop 8 for reason b...and because homosexuals have been arguing for more and more government intervention in our lives (hate crime laws, anti-discrimination laws, etc.) and I love the irony of the government finally extending into turf they don't like. perhaps it will be good for them.

What else do you have to evaluate any newly elected candidate?

I tend to agree, although I would phrase it slightly differently, and inquire as to the number of gun deaths which occurred during an otherwise legal activity or under otherwise legal circumstances.

If a criminal has a gun while committing his/her crime, the problem is still the criminal and not the gun.

Gun restrictions, in addition to being wholly unconstitutional, have the negative social effect of punishing law abiding citizens without impacting the criminal elements of society.

Wait a minute, let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater.

Where lawyers and politicians are concerned, death can be quite the social good.

Well, my personal beliefs, as a proper Progressive, are that I would prefer to live in a society where the right to live free from the threat of being shot to death trumps the right to own firearms

Well, my persoanl beliefs, as a proper Capitalist, are that I would prefer to live in a society where the right to live free from ugly, old, fat men trumps the right to be an ugly, old fat man.

what do you think rights are?

Our trying to understand just "why" you need such a weapon is also frustrating.

I'm sorry, but could you tell me why your opinion on what I need and do not need is relevent at all?

Why is it so absurd for me to take my property and exchange it for a fully automatic rifle instead of an lcd tv?

We don't need more gun laws, we need stiffer penalties for those who use guns illegally. Why is it that the anti-gunners can't understand that?

Myself, I'm kind of sick of irrational statements made by people who want me to believe them without providing any proof.

I'll even make it easy and ignore the rest of your post, but how about providing some facts to substantiate this claim.

What else to base the prediction on is simple past actions past record of votes past statements made that conflict with the more rencent ones. All of these get considered in my world when determining how far to trust a politician.

What we have in fact is conflicting statements about his intent when it comes to the assualt rifle ban.
Lacking a tie breaker until he actually acts I think I'll ted towards believing he will act to ban them.

so no one here is opposing my ability to go out and buy a fully automatic rifle?

it's a word our politicians use to inform the public of these dangerous dangerous children/police officer killing machines.
