I find the tv show 'Sex and the City' to be the same.  Four women, with differing attitudes about sex, exploring the wide, wide world.  If you haven't seen it, you might like it.
 
I suppose the word 'slut' could be a woman's way of reclaiming her right to act as she chooses in the sexual realm.  One of these days I'll have to read The Ethical Slut.

I'd gotten used to the word having a positive connotation in the small circle of people I know who actually use the word.

I guess a lot depends on context and even intonation, maybe.

It's like saying "epicure" or "hedonist" in that way; the words don't necessarily have a special ethical conotation apart from any context.

The positive connotations that I've heard from people I hang around with seem to indicate someone who is very positive about their sexuality.

Negatively, I guess it could imply selfishness, but, as I mention, I rarely hear it used that way. When I do, I think there's a bit of envy attached, perhaps.

My thoughts on the word itself have evolved over the years. When I was much (much!) younger, it was 'always' bad to be thought of as a slut. Guys would fuck you but not date you or take you home to their families. Girls wouldn't be friends with sluts. The stigma attached was akin to being skanky.

That stigma is still attached to the word in many ways. Taking ownership or pride in the word slut is very personal to a given individual. I'm not crazy about having that word applied to me except under certain circumstances by certain people. Ultimately, time and place appropriate works for me. I would never go up to the Pastor's wife, for example, and call her a slut. I might drop that label on a really good friend who's acting slutty and who I know would laugh along with me at the term and not be offended by it because no offense would be intended.

Personally, I prefer the phrase 'sexually free spirited' and that's what I most often use.

Agreed.  I'm in my 40s and come from a fundamentalist Christian family.  It wasn't that long ago that the Catholic church preached that simply enjoying sex was a sin.  Sex was for procreation only.  To the conservative mindest of people like my family, a slut is a whore.  Slut used to be a a power word with definite negative connotations.  

My Mistress is younger than i am, only 34, and She uses the word the way LA defined it.  I don't see where She feels it is negative at all.  For Her the word has a looser meaning, and often when She uses it with me it's when we are in bed and for Her it's a term of endearment.

Whether She realizes it or not, when She whispers a word like slut to me, it's the kind of thing that puts me right in subspace...
