What an odd thought candy. Erica Jong is one of the reigning writers on women and sexuality and "Fear of Flying" is probably one of the most well known books for decades now, why would you assume that most of "us" have not read it? I read it ohh I guess fifteen years ago and I believe the majority of my girlfriends and most women I know have too.

Anyway, as to the OP, I do not like the word slut, I hate when used by women to demean women, and if anyone besides Master ever called me that I would rip their eyes out. Just sayin' [;)] Oh and even when He says it it starts with a "My"and usually a fistful of hair. That of course is incrediby hot.

Aynne,

And indeed it should be incredibly hot................ if the hair pull is hard enought that it!

There's a book most of you have probably not read, called Fear of Flying by Erica Jong.  It's about a woman who takes joy and pleasure from her sexuality without giving a *crap* about what anyone else thinks.  I will always love that phrase in the book, *the zipless f**k*.

I find the tv show 'Sex and the City' to be the same.  Four women, with differing attitudes about sex, exploring the wide, wide world.  If you haven't seen it, you might like it.

I suppose the word 'slut' could be a woman's way of reclaiming her right to act as she chooses in the sexual realm.  One of these days I'll have to read The Ethical Slut

DesFIP -> RE: Slut What does it denote for you? (11/15/2008 8:18:32 PM)

I know there's a tendency here to redefine the word but to me it still has its original and highly negative connotations. I find it offensive when applied to me.

Especially in an email from someone I neither know, nor wish to know.

Slut can be a very wonderful name or an extremely bad name.  All depends upon the context and how it's used.  :-P

Whiplash,

Then may the gods of D/s deem that it is always properly used for you.

Might you be in the adult movie industry?

They should be so lucky, they could use a bit of creativity in their ... um ... art. However, I think, talking and actually acting (well) is not really the point.

What slut means to me:

SLUT is my alter ego. It’s being sexually uninhibited and having unlimited enjoyment of all things sexual, without having any negative feelings associated with it.  Because my Master requires me to be His slut, my alter ego is set free and i am able to be sexually uninhibited with Him and with anyone He chooses.

With my master, i am a:
Shameless
Lustful
Unabashed
Tart

joy
Master David's voluntary erotic-domestic slave

joy,

No doubt in  my mind that you have the right slant, thanks for the sharing.

I'd gotten used to the word having a positive connotation in the small circle of people I know who actually use the word.

I guess a lot depends on context and even intonation, maybe.

It's like saying "epicure" or "hedonist" in that way; the words don't necessarily have a special ethical conotation apart from any context.

The positive connotations that I've heard from people I hang around with seem to indicate someone who is very positive about their sexuality.

Negatively, I guess it could imply selfishness, but, as I mention, I rarely hear it used that way. When I do, I think there's a bit of envy attached, perhaps.

jeptha,

Well tone and inflection will play apart also.

atypicalsub -> RE: Slut What does it denote for you? (11/15/2008 8:59:20 PM)

I understand what several have said here about it having a different meaning coming from their own dominant than from someone they don't know.  However, it is also very empowering when someone *tries* to insult me by calling me a slut.  I just beam back at them with a proud and mischevious smile.  Such a response completely destroys their attempt to demean me.

It's far too generic to qualify as scathing material, but can be used as a term of endearment.

Thats the point, it used to be a scathing adjective, but it has evolved to......................./

I don't think the word slut has evolved; I think it remains a case of being a derogatory term among school children, but of limited use among adults. That's certainly the case with regard to my background.

It seems to be de rigueur among board members to use 'my slut' as opposed to 'you slut'. I must be from different stock; I could make use of 'slut' only with a woman offended by it.

Indeed I have seen that technique work before and it always makes me smile.

Since I use the term in my profile, it brought to mind the chance that over the last few years the meaning has morphed into an new understanding.

Whats your thoughts on the interpretation be ye "D" or "s"?

CP

My thoughts on the word itself have evolved over the years. When I was much (much!) younger, it was 'always' bad to be thought of as a slut. Guys would fuck you but not date you or take you home to their families. Girls wouldn't be friends with sluts. The stigma attached was akin to being skanky.

That stigma is still attached to the word in many ways. Taking ownership or pride in the word slut is very personal to a given individual. I'm not crazy about having that word applied to me except under certain circumstances by certain people. Ultimately, time and place appropriate works for me. I would never go up to the Pastor's wife, for example, and call her a slut. I might drop that label on a really good friend who's acting slutty and who I know would laugh along with me at the term and not be offended by it because no offense would be intended.

Personally, I prefer the phrase 'sexually free spirited' and that's what I most often use.

Agreed.  I'm in my 40s and come from a fundamentalist Christian family.  It wasn't that long ago that the Catholic church preached that simply enjoying sex was a sin.  Sex was for procreation only.  To the conservative mindest of people like my family, a slut is a whore.  Slut used to be a a power word with definite negative connotations.

My Mistress is younger than i am, only 34, and She uses the word the way LA defined it.  I don't see where She feels it is negative at all.  For Her the word has a looser meaning, and often when She uses it with me it's when we are in bed and for Her it's a term of endearment.

Whether She realizes it or not, when She whispers a word like slut to me, it's the kind of thing that puts me right in subspace...

beltainefaerie -> RE: Slut What does it denote for you? (11/17/2008 9:00:40 AM)

I love LA's definition.  I am wholeheartedly a slut and I am definitely a cherished slut.  I wouldn't have sex with just anyone, but I always enter into it with abandon.

Simply put, I absolutely agree with you.  I would compare it also to the "N" word - to which many arguments have been given about it being redefined. To each their own, but it's not a term I'd want personally applied to me, about me or spoken from me.

Mercnbeth -> RE: Slut What does it denote for you? (11/17/2008 9:52:26 AM)

it's a term of endearment coming from Master's lips...however, when it is slipped out between the teeth of some self-righteous onlooker who thinks this slave's attire is inappropriate (short skirt, no bra, 5 inch stillettos) as she passes them by, then she assumes it's derogatory.

it's all about intent.

When my Master calls me slut i know that i have done well. It m akes me feel good and proud to be His.

ThundersCry -> RE: Slut What does it denote for you? (11/17/2008 2:17:52 PM)

It depends on the person I am with...

Because I like to use the term...and believe me its a compliment if I do...

Does not mean that its ok with just anyone...

Some limits cannot be....broken.

TemptingNviceSub -> RE: Slut What does it denote for you? (11/17/2008 9:16:30 PM)

To the OP...slut denotes very little for me...One only will have the right to use it..otherwise..the usage is meaningless to me..I guess I am too old to get too hot or bothered by name calling from the general populace...Tempting
