BALTIMORE -- The nation's Roman Catholic bishops vowed Tuesday to forcefully confront the Obama administration over its support for abortion rights, saying the church and religious freedom could be under attack in the new presidential administration. In an impassioned discussion on Catholics in public life, several bishops said they would accept no compromise on abortion policy. Many condemned Catholics who had argued it was morally acceptable to back President-elect Obama because he pledged to reduce abortion rates.

Thoughts please... Is the Cathollic church going to far, will it make a difference to the government? Does it affect you if you are Catholic? This isnt so much a desire to get into another abortion debate as much as the "separation" of church and state.Lucy

This is neither an abortion issue nor a separation of church and state issue.  The bishops are taking one moral stance, as is their right.  They will be countered by others taking another moral stance, as is their right.

This is how public policy ought to move forward--through vigorous and spirited public debate from beyond the Supreme Court and the halls of Congress.

I'm always amazed at how the faithful feel God just isn't up to the task and needs help.

Actually, you have it backwards.  The people of faith that I know would likely say that God assigned such tasks to mankind.

Which makes it all very convenient---no matter what, they're just right.

This is chief among the tyrannies of our age.

Hardly convenient.  Convenience and ease, especially regarding this issue, would best be obtained by ducking the abortion question entirely.

Of course they believe they are right.  And some will agree with them and others will disagree.  And the debate will move forward....exactly as it should.

Convenient in terms of argument, of course, not effort.

Nice celt. I would have to agree that if one side applies the pressure, the other should have a chance as well.

My position on abortion seems unique. It is premeditated murder plain and simple and is wrong, but on the other hand nobody forces anybody to have an abortion either.

The needs of the many outweigh the rights of the unborn, if they are considered to exist. The stresses put on society by wanton stupid acts warrants a departure from true morality. This isn't the first time and it won't be the last. Abortion is a necessary evil. All I can say to these religious types is this, "OK, we are going to take every Woman who comes in for an abortion, capture her, force her to have the baby, and then bring you the babies, oh, and the hospital bills as well, agreed ?".

This is where seperation of church and state comes in.First of all there is no such thing, but there is. This is not a Catholic country, nor even a Christian country. I actually don't consider Catholicism to be Christian anyway, but that's beside the point.

You will not find the words Christ, God, Pope, YHWH or anything like that in the Constitution. They used the word Creator.

It just occured to me, so to be honest I will tell you this, I would have alot more respect for these people if they were protesting abortion on purely moral grounds, rather than being whipped up into a lather by some preacher wearing more jewelry than I own. That Good Book is not so good.

So I almost have a dilemma, I agree with them, it is wrong to kill a fetus. Most definitely so, but we must. We must because those who have already been born have not learned.

Maybe I have been around more people than most, or maybe I just take it differently and have my own conclusions. I have always used protection when having sex, and way back I might have not been so smart, but I knew it and I knew I was not ready. Now I am ready but too old. Sorry about my luck I guess but that's the way a life shapes up. I was too irresponsible, and the main difference between me and those who wound up with a bunch of kids is that I knew my limitations. Do I want to stop partying and all that ? No.

So I guess trojan is my Saviour, therefore I have never had nor paid for an abortion.

It just occurred to me, let's just start our own religion. The Wiccans did it, and Wiccans are pretty reasonable in their beliefs. I agree with a good part of their tenets, save a few I just can't swallow. But what about a religion of no deity whatsoever. Not Atheist, there is something but we are not on this plane of existence to figure that out.

The religion of survival. The religion that lets teenagers who made a bad decision one night to have an abortion, rather than wreck their life. A religion that does not condone all the necessary evils in life, yet can see the need.

Personally I would think it would be a good thing to give away tubal ligations to anyone wanting a free abortion, errrrr taxpayer funded abortion. Think about it, if you purposely destroyed a life you created for personal gain, which is exactly what you do when you have an abortion, they make it so that you cannot create any more life, thus making further taxpayer financed murders unnecessary. Less murders is good no ? Why wouldn't that satisfy everyone ?

I know why, it's human nature.

~FR~

Well, I find it rather amusing that the God in the (KJV) bible pretty much tells folks not to speak for him, don't try to understand his ways, don't take anything out, don't add anything in, yet there are a whole bunch of people who say a whole bunch of things in "His" name which have nothing to do with the bible. The RCC isn't going to be able to force the administration to do anything and given their history all I can say is.. Thank God for that!

I must go with Gloria Steinem on this one:

"If men could menstruate, abortion would be a sacrament."

If I wanted a bunch of men who wear dresses and won't fuck women to give me advice on sex, I'd find the nearest Drag show. With all respect to Drag Queens - I apologize for comparing you to sexless prunes (Bishops, not all Catholics) who want to ruin it for the rest of us.

This is especially funny considering the Pope just killed all the babies in limbo by arbitrarily saying limbo no longer exists.

Well, I would be more than happy to grab a shotgun and meet those bishops in DC. If the Catholic Church wants to declare excessive wealth a sin, then I'm just getting rid of the sinful.

If Roman Catholic bishops dont want abortions then they certainly shouldnt be forced to have them.

As for everyone else, they should be able to do or not do whatever the democratic process determines.

I'd find people a lot more credible if they said "God spoke to me; he said 'shut up.""

It's truly amazing how god tends to tell people to do what they want to do in the first place.

A priest at a South Carolina Roman Catholic church says his parishioners should not take Holy Communion if they voted for Barack Obama... He says that's because of the Democrat’s stance on abortion.

The Reverend Jay Scott Newman says church law doesn’t allow him to refuse parishioners the sacrament at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greenville.
But, he said his congregants shouldn’t take Communion until they do penance for supporting the man that in his words, "is the most radical pro-abortion politician ever to serve in the United States Senate or to run for president."

i think these sort of tactics are no different from those used by  terrorist groups in any fundamentalist state.  Forcing people to think as you do at the threat of eternal damnation...very dark ages. i especially find it troubling that Catholic Bishops couldn't get together and effectively rid the church of child-molesting pedophile priests in such an organized manner.  All the bouncing and cover ups instead of protecting of actual, living, existing children...but abortion rights??? They're up in arms!
'nuff said.

I feel like I've gone back in time. I can't  believe we are actually discussing this issue. We need more abortion, not less. There are too many people on the planet.

The only good by product of our illegal invasion is that the country will become more Catholic. I would just prefer mass to go back to Latin so I don't need to learn Spanish.

I'm still waiting for someone to show me something - anything - in the U.S. Constitution that mandates a separation of church and state.

Well, well, well, So the U.S. Conference of Bishops wants to 'face off' with POTUS?

I'm sure Obama or someome on his staff will give them a hearing, as a courtesy, but really, how exactly does any citizen *demand* a meeting with POTUS?

What a freaking laugh that they are concerned about 'religious freedom' in the U.S.  Christ, who else has been more of an officious intermeddler than the Catholic Church in the U.S.?

Better we should die from rusty coathangers again, huh?  The Religious Right and so-called 'Pro-Life' crowd make me *gag*.
