Will they bring the series back?

Unlikely, the ratings stunk and even the fan base wasn't enough to make the film a success at the box office.

He's dead, Jim

Bummer. I saw the movie last night and it was a bit like watching the tv show for two hours. I was disconcerted that some of the central characters died. Still, I like the series and would watch it if they brought it back.

i am a big star trek fan. i like Q. he is my hero. but i also like stephen king. and dragons and faries. i love hercules and xena. now beastmaster and highlander are also great.

i like the full range of fantasy and sci fi. if you throw in some horror then that is purrrrrrrfect

Yourkitten -> RE: Fantasy/science fiction fans here? (12/25/2005 7:27:01 AM)

Ive been reading the Science Fiction Thread . I recently rented Serenity, found it interesting, but not the caliber of the Stark Trek series.
But what amused me, was that the Screen play killed off 2 of the teams players, the pilot Wash, and the passenger the Shepard Book.Both these minor players added wit and humor to the story line.
The writers of Star Trek would never think of doing that in the first season. Perhaps John Warren is correct, there will not be a continuing saga, even though the outlaw motif with the leather; the boots, the handcuffs, and the x frame (used in an earlier scene) was good.

Have you ever read _Intensity_ by Dean Koontz? It has alot of D/S overtones & is quite good.

Someone once suggested on another site that a taste for sci-fi is a BDSM trait.... lol I guess I'm the "real-deal" then as I quite enjoy my sci-fi.

Hmm, lol, well, I would have to disagree then. While I like some sci-fi, I am not a big fan. I never could develop a liking for Star Trek, Deep Space Nine, etc...but I do like Star Wars and a few odd sci-fi movies. I can remember when Space Odyssey and Dune first came out...I thought they were the greatest movies every made lol.

That qualifies as a taste.... Looks like you're a *real* BDSMer, too! lol

The original Star Trek certainly had some corny plots and understandably poor special effects but also enough good story lines to make it interesting.

But I really hated the next series - the "Can't we all just get along Generation" - complete with a counsellor and Klingon on the bridge! The sensitive, new age nineties has much to answer for! It's only saving grace was to introduce the Borg....

Focus.

Manawyddan -> RE: Fantasy/science fiction fans here? (12/26/2005 5:30:09 AM)

Piers Anthony I used to like (though always considered him light), but when I have gone back to reread them I found them unbearable. I did like On A Pale Horse when i t came out (and it has a nifty torture sequence!), but the series devolved into a tedious soap opera.

Brin & LeGuin are both of consistently high quality and I would recommend any of their books to anyone.

Orson Scott Card has high points and low points. I tend to prefer his science fiction to his fantasy. However, he has pushed the Ender series past its limits. I would say the first three novels are excellent but after that it deteriorates quickly.

Phillip Jose Farmer is a fun writer, though I tend to prefer his writing on writing (his Wold Newton stuff) to be the most enjoyable.

George RR Martin has always been an average-to-good SF writer, but his current Ice & Fire fantasy series is breathtaking in its quality and scope. I can't recommend it highly enough to anyone (though I do wonder whether it will actually ever end ... )

Star Trek TOS is an undeniable classic, but the touchy-feely sequals have left me cold, with the exception of the final season of Enterprise which we written pretty much like very well done fanfic about the original series (a good thing for me). I want the two 'Mirror, Mirror' spinoffs on a DVD.

Joss Whedon I discovered with Firefly, never having cared for Buffy (I am uninterested in vampires and in faux martial arts), and became a big fan of the show. What I've heard people say about the film Serenity is that it did just well enough in the theatres, combined with projected video sales, to greenlight a sequal, although I wouldn't count on how long a series will run unless the studio gives it more of an advertising push.

I really liked Enterprise. I particularly enjoyed the Mirror Mirror episodes you mentioned. It was a shame it got canceled.
I will also recommend Jacqueline Careys Kushiel series since the primary character is a sexual masochist...it has lots of D/S overtones, politics & some nice combat sequences as well.

you and I were meant to be friends, I also inhale books. Orson Scott Card is Awesome!!

Piers Anthony has a great book and the heroine of the story is a cutter. It has an interestings follow up at the end about the topic and why he wrote the story ( I read it years ago so , sorry do not remember the title)

Perhaps, I read through the posts too quickly but I was surprised not to see any favorites going to Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. As I am from Australia it may be different overseas but I have met a number of people over here that actually became interested in fantasy thanks to these two visionaries.

Anyway, I would have to put the Weis and Hickman duo at my number 1 spot. I am also reading a series by Anne Kelleher at the moment that is interesting enough to keep me coming back.

fp2012 -> RE: Fantasy/science fiction fans here? (12/27/2005 2:07:41 AM)

Ah, Douglas Adams. I am in love with Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (and all the books following) also, LOTR, and Harry Potter, Star Wars, sheesh too many to name. You know you're a fantasy geek when you dress up as Pippin from Lord of the Rings and instead of seeing the film, you see Big Fish in the theater instead lol.

1wildwolf -> RE: Fantasy/science fiction fans here? (12/27/2005 5:01:40 AM)

I have tried to read all the posts (but probably missed it anyway, lol)

no one has mentioned Robert Jordan, Wheel of Time Series? hopefully he will decide to finish it one of these days, only up to number 11 though i guess

i agree with people on Anne McCaffrey, also William Horwood, David Eddings, Tom Holt and Terry Pratchett for comedy fantasy books

Also Frank Herbett and the Dune novels, his family are also riding in on his coat tails

and with the current movie, C.S Lewis and the Narnia books

I also like L.E Modeist Jr though havent read too many of his yet

talmar -> RE: Fantasy/science fiction fans here? (12/27/2005 1:17:40 PM)

I enjoyed the early Weis & Hickman Dragon Lance novels. I also heard from some friends that there Death Gate Cycle books were good but I haven't read any yet.

talmar -> RE: Fantasy/science fiction fans here? (12/27/2005 1:22:02 PM)

I am currently in the process of reading _Knife of Dreams_ the 11th Wheel of Time novel. His series is good & it has some very interesting D/S elements throughout it. I would like to see him move the plot more though. The first four books of this series I would put up against anything in the fantasy field.

1wildwolf -> RE: Fantasy/science fiction fans here? (12/28/2005 2:15:02 AM)

aye....i know....i have to re read the rest of the series every time he releases a new book so i know exactly whats happened lol

kiki blue -> RE: Fantasy/science fiction fans here? (12/28/2005 4:27:00 AM)

My favourite authors are Jacqueline Carey, Raymond E Feist, David Eddings, I'm getting into Terry Pratchett now.

Are any of you into fantasy or science fiction ho are your favorite authors?

ROBERT HEINLEIN!!!!

Anne McCaffery

Curious that those are the only two that come to mind. Perhaps I need that first cup of coffee.

I'll call your Heinlein and McCaffrey and raise you a Mercedes Lackey, Holly Lisle, Piers Anthony, Lissane Norman, Laurell K. Hamilton (ok.. may be classed as horror by some), Joan D. Vinge, and Donald Kingsbury.

LadiesBladewing -> RE: Fantasy/science fiction fans here? (12/28/2005 2:30:24 PM)

Oh, yes. Lady SilverRose is a big Weis-Hickman fan... I have so many -non-fiction- books I'm reading these days that I haven't gotten to any of their books. Up to my ears in other things, I have to drag myself away for a while when one of my long list of established authors brings out something new.

Maybe I'll break out and taste some Weis-Hickman while I'm off this week.

My favorite Piers Anthony novel is _On A Pale Horse_. Have you read it?

We have double copies of the entire Incarnations of Immortality series, since our teenaged short people INSIST on wanting to read the exact same volume that one of US is immersed in. *chuckles*
