i should be shocked.........i should be outraged.......i should be appalled.......Sadly, i'm none of those things. i fear i'm becoming immune to the dumb ass, incoherently thought out, trite ass bullshit that some people want to spread and sell  as gospel truth. i had a great revelation tonight as i was reading this thread. The first one has to do with why He has lost interest in reading Collar Me, let alone why He does not necessarily like me being here. But, that's a point for another time and another place.  The other realization i had was one of the ways i got to be where i'm at.  i'm anorexic.  Yep, i said it..Fuck all this pretencious ass bullshit, i am what i am. Recently, i was informed that i was not eligible for the gastric bypass surgery because i have a history of anorexia. Many of you, if you saw my picture, would be shocked, appalled, and argue till the cows come home that someone of my weight can not be anorexic. Well, surprise.  Currently, i have a healthy relationship with food in my life. i use it to provide fuel for my body. But, guess what? i will eat McDonalds. Yep, yep i will. And guess what? i will not even feel bad about it. Do i eat it every meal of every day? uhm...Nope!! Do i 'sit on my ass, drinking soda and eating fast food?" uhm...again, nope!! Do i over-indulge in food, having great difficulty saying no to seconds, thirds, fifths, whatever? uhhh...Nope.. So, you know...Screw this shit!! i also work my ass off to try and lose weight, and at every step of the way my body fights against me. By the way, for many of you who want to stand in  judgement  you can jump off a cliff because after the surgeon removed my thyroid and my endocrinologist was busy packing his freaking office, i was gaining weight. It was not until i had gained 165 pounds that anyone thought to put me on some kind of replacement medication.....  My unhealthy relationship with food began there. i began starving myself...buying into this bullshit myth that if i just eat less....if i just exercise more.....if i just............if i just don't.....................if i just don't...................
Well, guess what. It hasn't worked yet. Should i have to buy two seats? Honestly, i don't even freaking care. What offends the hell out of me are the wild and outrageously judgmental accusations that some people will type on here regarding other people and their weight.

I am by far not large, in fact Im pretty tiny. I do suffer from clostroophpbia and social anxiety disdorder. When I fly I go to the counter and explain my disability, they are very nice as they let me load first and if the flight isnt full they will actually reserve the seat next to mine so that Im not pined in. They do their best to get me in the front of the plane so Im not stuck in the mass congestion of leavign the plane and can get off pretty fast, while technicallly using two seets I have no problem getting the use of two seats on condition the flight isnt full..

If this fair to obese have to purchace 2 seat no, but the airline have been very aware of my condition.

I am 6'1 and 300 lbs.  Can't fit into an airline seat either way.  So I drive everywhere and enjoy the scenery.

As far as losing weight.  I am one of those people that can't.  I have done everything under the sun to lose weight short of surgery and it seems I gain.  So I gave up trying.  I eat healthy, I exercise and I maintain.  My blood pressure is well within normal levels, My blood sugar is well within normal levels, I had an EKG the other day and the  Dr. couldn't say anything negative about it.  I am healthy.  I can't walk for exercise because of an injury I sustained at the hands of a wreckless driver several years ago but I can do normal daily walking...what is it, 3 miles a day for the average person?  You can't judge a book by its cover...I was given lemons and I make the greatest lemonaid ever made.

If you want to make me pay more for the same service that everyone is getting, then you don't really want my money.  If you want to discriminate against me because I am Large,  (I won't say overweight because I don't believe I am.) then you have lost a potential good friend and ally.  I have made my choice....your choice in how you relate to me is your decision to make.  Not seeking to change anyone's view of how they see the world....however if you judge someone by what they look like, then we go back to the pre 60s era and the days of segregation.  I dont' think anyone wants that.  Or do they?

a) You aren't getting the same service as everyone else if you are using more than everyone else.

So if I am taking up 2 seats, then it stands to rights that I get 2 packets of peanuts and 2 cups of soda....and 2 smiles from the flight attendant etc.....that doesn't happen....I am getting the same service...plain and simple.

b) Discrimination would be to simply not allow larger people on the plane.

It's coming to that....and even if I wasn't 300 lbs...I would still not fit in a conventional space.  I am TALL too....so I just drive...Discrimination comes in many different forms..it doesn't just mean excluding.

Speaking as a short person, I have to say that being stuck in the middle between two very large and overflowing people in economy class is not a fun way to fly.  And if someone needs to get out for the restroom?  Then you pretty much have to stand up and block the aisle.

If you are wedged in and the plane crashes you have a higher chance of survival according to UK train crash studies.

This is a fabulous idea, mistoferin.  But do you think that the airlines would charge more for the larger seats?  or less for the children? Will we be flying by the pound someday the way our luggage can already?

FR~ Maybe this whole issue could be resolved if the airlines would accomodate for the fact that people don't come in just one size. If they made some "seat and halfs" and then some "kid seats" they could probably even still get the same number of people on a plane.

that is a pretty great idea :)

i wonder, would they have them all in certain seating areas, or would they be interspersed? like would your kid have to sit apart from you in a "kid section"
or could you request and adult/kid seat combo? and i'm sure somebody somewhere would take offense at the idea of "being relegated to the fat section" on a plane. =p

that's a pretty gnarly idea :)

As in the impact would be a buffered somewhat?        That is a very disturbing image.  Don't want to go there.

This is what UK train regulators have argued in terms of passenger capacity.

Do you have links to any stories or articles on that?

It stands to reason that a packed place would be safer, less room to be flung about.

Yep unless the train tips on its side, a window breaks and all the packed commuters find themselves being sliced up between the outside ground and the moving carriage through the broken window. Or the fact that F=ma also applies to the mass of bodies being accelerated against you.

Well if you have two, then you should share! Then at least if we get into a plane crash, I'm going to die happy.

with in Canada.  Why stop there?  How about bus seats, booths, etc.

I had an obese friend that it was so humiliating to go out to eat and not be seated properly.

He has since had the surgery...

But I am smaller then average size, and I find alot of public seating to be too small.  What do you think?

I wasn't aware that sitting comforatbly was a right...

It's wrong to penalise people because of their size.
People are all human, only too human and we are not all the same.
You should be given as much space as you need, God knows we all pay enough.
The airlines make more than enough money.

well...I need the entire first class section to be comfortable as I don't like people and I don't like being near them.

The airlines make more than enough money so...I shouldn't be penalized.

As someone not so skinny myself, I think this is a bad idea. I have long legs, it doesn't mean I should be able to sit in first class without paying extra. If you need more room, pay for more room.

bingo. what these selfish people don't understand is that airlines are private property. they are owned and managed by individuals. they offer their service because we, the consumer, want it. sorry, but no one has a right to someone else'e property.

Here is My vote...
Any airline passenger who is making more than $250,000 per year will pay an extra surcharge to the airline and then that money will be put into a pot and the obese people who need an extra seat will have one without penalizing any of the people who are making less than that.  Sound fair?

no. that doesn't sound fair at all.

these policies should be left up the airlines.

you aren't receiving the same service as I would. I only get one seat. You get two. that's a different service. but if you view this as unfair, I would suggest that you and other large people not fly on airlines who would make you pay for the extra space. if enough people stop buying tickets, perhaps you would find an airline who would want to accomodate you and get your money. forcing other people to do with their property what you want them to do (with no regard to their wishes) is qutie selfish.
